This is a film that people should watch at least once in their life but never again after that... LOL! So yeah, I think majority of the people who've seen this will say the same thing. Not watching it again, but it was worth a watch.

To think, you might have woken up thinking “today is going to be a great day.” Love this film for what it represents, the retelling of the true story showcasing the atrocities of war with not sugarcoat.

In the last scene, we see the night view of Kobe in 1988, but a few years later it was once again covered in rubble from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

he described aunt a distant relative. in Japanese language, ‘aunt’ could be anyone in your family who is fairly older than you, or anyone who’s not even blood-related who shares a same community. in the original novel, she’s described as ‘mother’s cousin’s wife’s sister’ and they had never seen each other until they lost their home. clearly there’s a difference in the class and financial situation between the two families. Aunt doesn’t have a room to share when there’s no enough food for everyone. her act can’t be justified, but in the war time anyone could be like her, that’s my take. loved your honest reaction!

Oh really? Same in New Zealand. My hillbilly family in the states always goes 'first cousin once removed' It is weird calling my uncle my cousin.

It's a heartbreaking masterpiece. The music, the picture, the rythm... are wonderful, the story behind all of it is absolutly heartbreaking. It's, with Mononoke, my favourite Studio Ghibli movie.

Please do more of these!!! By the way the girls rashes and itching was caused by her malnutrition 😢 I honestly think this movie should be mandatory. War affects EVERYONE. There was a lot of ugly truth to this movie…people should pay attention. Suggestion on the next one Ponyo or my neighbor Totoro!!

I am a Japanese in my fifties. When I was in primary and junior high school, war was only taught as history. Amd the only teaching materials available at the time were black-and-white photographs and VHS videos that the Japanese government had finally disclosed. Nowadays, I am amazed at these animations and the colour recordings that the US had, digitally processed images and the fact that I feel much closer to the war than I did back then. And what I remember most as a child is that the survivors and their families in Hiroshima almost never opened their mouths at all in the documentary on the war that NHK always reports on every August. Even then, the wounds were too deep, I now know. At the time, many people from Hiroshima and Nagasaki who were exposed to radiation, and many of their families were also denied marriage. So those who felt for their families could hardly have made them suffer by exposing them on television to the fact that they had been exposed to radiation, in addition to what they had suffered.I am proud as a fellow citizen that the Japanese are so good at animation and portray war from such a universal and objective perspective. There is truth in the way they portray it, not blaming that 'aunt'. Because I probably would have been like that.

Best anti-war movie ever. What makes it so tragic was that this is based off true events The real "Seita" wrote a short story as a way to help cope with his feelings over the situation and change a few parts of the story. But most of it was true. And the ending of the story was EXACTLY how it happened in real life (including all of the dialogue.)

Many feel that the aunt abused these siblings. However, it should be noted that this is the historical context of the piece. At the time, food was not easily available and people did not know when they would be bombed. This aunt had to support several of her own children. She also had to take care of Kanta and Setsuko, which added to her troubles. Kanta was always with young Setsuko and did not help her aunt and her family. During the day, the aunt had to work at the community association, and Setsuko's nightly crying severely disturbed the aunt and her family's bedtime. So it is hard to say that my aunt and her family were not evil. Many Japanese citizens did not have the mental and physical capacity. What is frightening is that what happened to Kanta and Setsuko was not unusual at the time. In the scene at the beginning of the film, it was common for many war orphans, including Kanta, to starve to death at the train station. This continued for some time after the war.

Trivia: If you visit Sannomiya Station (where Seita died), you can still observe bullet holes. Anyway, all wars are nothing but evil, and children are always their victims.

When the fruit drop jar opened it released setsuko's innocent spirit. Giving perfect reason for her protective brother to manifest. Basically leading to a Haunting????

I find the English dub less emotional than the original, everytime I hear Setsuko speak it's so obviously an adult doing a baby voice that I cringe, especially during the crying scenes.
