interesting points The same animator was in charge of the scene where Chihiro cries and eats rice balls and the scene where Haikyuu's players cry and eat in the cafeteria after losing in the match against Aoba Johsai. Chihiro and Hinata's facial expressions are similar. Haku's voice actor and Haikyuu's Suga are the same person. The voice actor voiced Haku in his debut work when he was a child actor.

I watched this movie when I was a child. I got scared when the parents became pigs and the city changed to a spirit world; but I continued watching because of the character development and magnificent frames. That movie changed me!

There is also an interpretation that the moment Chihiro let go of Haku's hand, she forgot everything that happened in the village. Miyazaki Hayao always creates weird things and unkind storylines. But the stories always touch the heartstrings, and he make sure we know what message he wanted to convey in the end. Ghibli films seem to come to us much more deeply if we feel them with our hearts rather than looking for a very specific reason rationally.

I’ve already seen your reaction to Spirited Away, but I rewatched just because. God the way I love this movie! It’s been my favorite film since I saw it back in 2003, I was 7 years old at the time, I watched it with a classmate back then who since has been my best friend, this year we celebrated 21 years of friendship and just in time, the movie was screened again in theaters here, so we went to see it together again. We both cried. My best friend is also a professional violin player and she played at Animatissimo, an orchestra here in Peru that plays famous anime and video game scores, I went to see their Ghibli symphony. I legit cried during several songs but specially in the Spirited Away ones, my best friend also cried during that one. Ghibli films just have something to them that I feel a lot of new animated films lack, they have so much heart, so much thought put in them, they touch on so many societal topics. Miyazaki’s last film came out this year, The Boy and The Heron, I’m dying to watch it, I’m waiting for it to be released here.

The entrance and exit look different (director Miyazaki did this on purpose). The paper that was attacking Haku is thought to be the shikigami of Onmyodo. In Japan, snakes or dragons have long been considered river spirits. The rotten god that Chihiro rescued is a river spirit just like Haku. That's why he left gold dust as a thank you.

this movie is currently playing in our local theater and i just watched it for the 5th time but first time in a theater and it was absolutely magnificent

This is still my favourite Ghibliomovie. I barely go to the cinema but I watched it there 3 times. The music in all Ghibli- lives is so outstanding and the design for all the gods is just beautiful and unique

Ahhh, this unlocks so many old good memories for me, I loved this movie so much on my childhood (I still do), I watched it with my younger brother. You should watch 'Ponyo' or 'grave of the fireflies' next! Those are gems.

This movie is the best! the older you get the more you enjoy this. And it's so deep as well. I read it somewhere before, apparently this movie is about adulthood. Chihiro represents a person who has just entered adulthood (aka the forst jobber lol) She had to work to survive (Yubaba said that if anyone doesn't work they will be turned into a pig.) Haku lost his identity (name), and No Face represents the loneliness and abandonment of adulthood. btw thank you for the reaction!

SG movies are something special. Everything from the art style, music, acting etc. brings out emotions deep within. I've not yet watched every SG movie but from the ones I've seen, anything I listen to the OSTs that Joe composed, I can't help but feel strong emotions.

Princess Mononoke has been my favorite anime movie since I watched it in the 2000s. Before that, the only other anime movie I'd seen was Akira. I recommend Princess Mononoke if you haven't seen it yet. Anything Miyazaki is a winner, but it's the best in my opinion.

Yubaba-the “villain” in Spirited Away-is said to have been inspired by Yamauba or Onibaba, which is a Yōkai that usually appears in Japanese folklore. Yamauba is a type of kijo (female demon) or a mountain witch who was originally a human but became corrupted and turned into a Yōkai (Japanese ghost such as Yuurei or spirit (Sei). This may be a bit wrong but it’s such a vast set of subject to tell the truth! There are good versions of these sort of entities too with another name that I can’t recall and that’s sometimes hard to find the exact name for the exact thing since there are hundreds of Yōkai! 😂❤ ​​⁠ it’s as I described… many videos that explain about these types of beings that become like Yubaba when before they used to be alot wiser and were often healers and sages of the area. Both human and non human could become like Yubaba and others that may or not have been shown in the films. But the films definitely showed a heck of alot of Yōkai and other beings which was amazing enough❤️ With Japanese stuff it’s even more complex and deep to where even the stuff I’m sharing today is far deeper and more nuanced and sometimes similar characters or beings or exact same entities show up in different stories that became very famous ancient theatre plays etc.

I’m happy to explain a bit more what a Yōkai is. Interestingly there are many good kind too and often can depend on how we treat others around us as well as objects in our daily lives ❤ but aside from that there are many types of Yōkai that are not simply associated with objects. Heck. Sometimes they can imbue or attach to objects as well. Which is why even every object as a fork or chopsticks are treated with care and respect, for if they aren't they become negative versions of Yōkai which also puts bad luck upon the family or the specific family member, thr opposite happens if treated well. We choose the fate or their transformation as they grow to have a spirit potent enough to become considered living by our modern standards. Same as how a beloved family dog becomes a guardian of that family forever. Even gets a statue outside & inside the house and at times even gets a place by the family ancestral shrines within the home itself!

I love this movie! One thing I notice about Miyazaki and portraying romantic love in his movie(As Zeniba refers to Kohaku as Chihiro's "Dragon Boyfriend", indicating the love Chihiro has for Kohaku is romantic love), is he often presents the idea that romantic love isn't just for what we consider as "adults" what we consider as "kids" are just as capable of having romantic love as adults, some may even be capable to have that kind of love for someone way before others. Something to know in terms of the way that Chihiro's parents treated Chihiro and the way they were careless had a lot to do with how safe Japan is, in Japan, children are expected to walk to school without adult supervision by Chihiro's age which is 10 years old up to the end of high school as far as I know, because it is so safe, parents don't have to constantly check if the child stay close by all the time, and for a lot of Japanese parents, they don't have the worry of their child getting lost as much with the safe environment. There is actually proof that Kohaku and Chihiro are soulmates, Chihiro is the only one who knows Kohaku when he's in his dragon form, their storylines are similar, even after years without meeting each other, they recognized each other. The 6th stop means home, love, and family. In the first scene of the movie where you can see the goodbye card, the card says "Good luck, Chihiro. Hope we meet again." That's more than just a coincidence. A lot of people think that kids are not capable of romantic love, that it is impossible for kids to have romantic feelings for anyone, but this is not that simple, yes, a lot of kids don't have that kind of experience, but when I was a kid and I watched Spirited Away, near the end where Kohaku's eyes literally sparkles like the most beautiful emerald gems I had ever seen at the age of 12, that was the moment when I know I was in love and the feelings were for sure romantic.

In the second half of the story, the things that look like animal monuments before entering the tunnel are the former humans who looked back even though they shouldn't have looked back. It's like Lot's wife when he came out of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible.

I think it's great that they are both watching the film with Japanese audio. The Japanese audio version is the true reflection of the director Miyazaki and the voice actors who portrayed the characters.

When grampa said “love”, this implies that Chihiro and Haku were siblings. Chihiro fell in the river as described in the movie, Haku, as a human and her brother, saved her but he drowned in the river. Because such a pure mind of Haku that he just wanted to save his sister’s life, he became a spirit of the river he drowned. Chihiro’s mother is always somewhat cold to her because of grief of losing of her son, and Chihiro’s mom cannot help thinking that he died because of Chihiro. In this movie, it was Chihiro’s turn to save her brother. This story is about siblings’ love.❤

I always enjoy watching your channel. Your opinion of this theme is also of great interest to me as a Japanese person because it is both direct and indirect. Now, I would like to add a little more about the other backstory of this story. Who is Haku? Haku is an incarnation of a white dragon, and in the story he is always seen as a guardian of Sen. Originally, dragons existed as water spirits to control the flooding of rivers and to answer prayers for rain. If you look closely at the scene near the end of the film, you can see a figure holding out his hand to a child struggling in the water. In other words, the scene seems to refer to the younger sister Chihiro drowning in the river and her older brother who was swept away by the river while trying to save her. The older brother eventually becomes the holy spirit of the river and incarnates into a dragon.This makes sense of the mother's reluctant attitude toward Chihiro at the beginning of the film. In other words, it can be seen as a story of healing and liberation for a family with such an unhappy past. Ghibli films always seem to contain this duality. When I look back at them again with this aspect in mind, I realize that they are indeed made with such consideration, and I am deeply moved. And of course, Hayao Miyazaki made this story in that way. The not breathing thing was just a scene for kids. Kids understand magical thinking like having to hold your breath for something to happen. It didn't have any deep meaning. Although the literal idea was about her not being seen as they cross the bridge.

I’ll never get tired of watching ghibli films. All of them are masterpieces. So much love put into action packed plus movies with never not a lesson to learn that I keep catching later on after countless rewatches Spirited away is a lot of things. One thing I noticed on this watch with you guys is how you can never predict any character lol. Although that does happen a whole bunch of times with this studio (is what makes them so enjoyable), this movie in particular, it’s likely to be among the main themes. Everyone’s not what they seem. There’s a theory that Haku is Chihiro’s brother who tried to save her from drowning but he died, but because of his kind heart he was turned into a god of the Kohaku river. Their mom is somehow a bit harsh on Chihiro as you can see at the beginning because Chihiro was the reason why her son died. She thinks she loves Chihiro but unconsciously she is hard on Chihiro.
