Holbein watercolor is just awesome... I put my own 24 color Holbein palette together made of mostly single pigment colors (i.e. PY175 for my cool yellow, PY110 for my warm), and you just can't make a bad mix out of them. Believe me, I've tried. They rewet like butter! They are super vibrant and can really knock your socks off in concentration. Check out the trio of Marine Blue (PB16) Lemon Yellow (PY175), and Quin Magenta (PR122). The range you can get from these three paints is stunning.. and ohh so pretty! Also, I believe there is a translation available for the brochure if you search "Miyazaki brochure translated"... James Gurney's blog I think. Cheers!

OMG finally seeing it! 😍 I've seen so much talk about this set with very little information about it past photos. The fact that it was only 80 USD is amazing as well because that's totally worth the price! Holbein definitely holds up for its hype, especially the transparency. It is a shame about the palette only being 18 wells though. I thought the image of the paints in the palette actually including them all? But that's only an assumption and I'll have to rewatch to double-check. 24 well palettes aren't too hard to find, but it feels like an extra step that could have been avoided if they just swap that out. Thanks for another video and this was so fun to watch.
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 4 жыл бұрын
After I finished editing the video, I went back and looked at the drawing on the brochure and EVEN THERE, the palette shown only has 18 wells! Which is super weird. I guess maybe they only use 18 of the 24 colors, normally? Not really sure! Kind of want to take the time to translate the pamphlet to see if there are any insights, but that’ll take FOREVER since I can only read hiragana and katakana and would have to hobble together something ridiculous between my flimsy abilities, google translate, and blind guesswork. OH WELL. And yeah, I hadn’t seen anything about what all cane in the set, didn’t even know it came in a cute bag! So, like always, I have become what I wish existed. =>.

It looks like he uses the mixing areas as “zones” for colors, so he has the bright zone, blue, 2 greens, dark and black. From what I can understand he also put a little of the paints in the corners of those big areas as well. It’s hard to read. But he does say that the pack is all you need, and that you don’t need to clean it and you don’t need the little holes the arrow points to, so I’m assuming he uses the mixing areas as wells.

I’ve been using Holbein for 30 years while I don’t use it exclusively (I use it 90% of the time) it is my favorite watercolor to use, I do illustration and for me it’s the best. I’ve been using for so long I know how it reacts the ins and outs of the brand and I feel it just superior to other brands. I love this set and it’s very worth it, these are the colors that Miyazaki uses exclusively, some of his original colors are no longer manufactured and have been replaced with newer colors (if you do a search there are a couple videos that cover the original full set, Oto Kano did one that recreates the original and she does an excellent job so be sure to check it out here on KZfaq) I have both this set and the older original complete set which cam with 2 brushes a 24 well palette and sketch book. The Mitsubishi Uni pencil is the same brand Miyazaki uses (although I do prefer a harder lead myself) are excellent pencils and I highly suggest them, the pare in the sketch book is 90lb. Cold pressed, hard to find outside of Asia but is of excellent quality. Holbein works best on Saunders Waterford in my opinion due to it’s sizing it’s fine on Arches as well. I look forward to seeing you use them and what you do with them. Thanks for posting!
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, so the original came with a 24 Well palette?! Wonder why they changed it! Such an odd alteration. Had a feeling that the paper was roughly 90#, but your praise for it is only making me more curious about it! Hilariously, the video where I first mentioned having gotten this set was where I tested out my Saunders Waterford paper, and I even mentioned that I really liked the way my pre-existing Holbein paints worked on it! You’re only making me more excited and more eager to dig into these supplies and that’s NOT GOOD because I have so many other things I’m supposed to be doing! =>.

I've seen alot of channels do reviews on Holbein and for one reason or another (it usually ends up being the paper) or they find some colors to be opaque or they think that it's the multi-pigment mixes that's a problem, none of these things are a problem you just have to work with a product to find it strengths, Holbein is excellent for both illustration and traditional painting but it does have a few quirk's such as the paper you use and understanding how to use opaque paints. Saunders Waterford is Kind of the official paper of Holbein and they make blocks of Waterford that's Holbein branded but it's not widely known outside of Asia I do think that there maybe a different sizing use on those but I can be sure, you find it on Amazon but it doesn't ship to where I live and it's been many years since I've used it to compare it to the Saunders I use now which I buy in full sheets. Now I'm from the Pacific Northwest and when I lived State side I used Daniel Smith which I find inferior to Holbein for illustration and I can get Holbein much cheaper here, but even if the price was comparable I would still choose Holbein! I also use Schminke for some pieces depending on the project but it has to do with the brand having more transparent colors available but I find the colors aren't as vibrant in thin washes or for layering but it's still a fine paint.

Antony Michael Pugh have you tried Sennelier? It’s very probably my favorite brand and their colors are AMAZING for layering. They’ve got a vibrancy and....glowy-Ness to them that really is unmatched. In my opinion, far superior to schmincke in those aspects.
@tmp0922
@tmp0922 4 жыл бұрын
@@MeowMeowKapow Yes I have tried Sennilier! They are wonderful brand and they layer beautifully and the colors are quite vibrant but they are very expensive to ship here and I would probably replace my Schminke with either them or M. Graham which I also like, but they don't ship to me either, I have very few choices here but I don't think I would ever change from Holbein. I'll be moving back to the States next year and I know that I'll face some problems getting my favorite brand but I do have relatives living in Japan and will have access to them my only concern being the time for shipping. Holbein in Japan is very cheap 5mil tubes are 3-5 dollars and 15mil tubes run 7-10 dollars and the most expensive colors run 12 bucks and for a professional brand of their quality that's hard to beat!

In your full review are you going to list all the colors in the Ghibli pallet? I don't think I'm gonna be able to go to the Ghibli museum for 10, maybe 20 years (which is totally fine, I can wait) but it'd be fun to be able to recreate the pallet or maybe you could make some mini sets for your shop that were inspired by the big set.

Because I can’t get these colors anywhere else, I DEFINITELY will not be making palettes for sale with any of them. As for what a future video will contain? Well, I can’t promise anything because I definitely change my mind unexpectedly, but it’s relatively safe to assume that is end up swatching them out, and I usually write the names with the swatches, sometimes even the pigment info. Worst case scenario, you should be able to see all the color names as I planned over them in this video, but it would be a lot of work to pause and write them all down. =>.

I found the translation online if you wanted to know on the brochure Title: My recommendation. Transparent watercolor is good. Transparent watercolor has a strong habit, do not paint stickily and paint after wiping the extra paint and water off. Paint thinly the bright part, had better not use white, paint other color after under color has dried. Let’s mix the color and use it. Wet the wool (brush hair) which protrudes on a new painting brush. Anything is fine for a water vessel. A retractable knife is enough for the pencil sharpener. One 2B pencil is enough for the pencil. Divide the palette into seven zones: Bright, Dark, Black, Green 1, Green 2, Blue 2, Blue 1. Do not use the eraser. Do not draw a guideline for a picture. Tthese painting materials are enough for a 2-week trip and preparations for a movie.

When drawing black ink lines on watercolor what do you use? I bought some staedtler fineliners and inked something up. Then I went to water color on top of it and found that they weren't waterproof. Are those lines typically added in after painting or are there pens that are waterproof and used for this. Thanks
