Just too sad for each individual in nature's wild animal kingdom. Just a baby and almost grown. Only savings grace if any, is that unlike hawks who take forever to pluck their prey leading to a very long, painful ordeal, this wasn't as long even though this poor baby suffered.

The chick was so heavy it's hard to believe that the owl could carry it back to its nest.

I don't think people realize how territorial and aggressive owls are. I used to work at a wildlife rehabilitation center. As soon as owls fledge, they become territorial little freaks of nature that can and will RUN you down to attack your legs.

I know it's part of nature, but still utterly heartbroken for this family. May you fly free, Lil one, and all the chicks we've known but lost.

After seeing about 300 videos similar to this, I wonder has anyone done research into whether the night observation lights and camera movements/noises attract predators to these nests? It's almost as if you've put a spotlight on them in the center of an otherwise dark forest and in neon lights have a sign that says "FREE FOOD HERE". I bet the nearby nests, the ones without lights and cams pointing them out to the entire potential predator universe, have much higher success rates.

RIP lil one you did all you could do and Luther Dad we love you for taking on 2 babies and not abandon them when your mate died or Mom Osprey. Such a tragedy one right after another. 2 babies close to fledging and mom Osprey just heartbroken 😭 You all be remember by so many.

Man, owls are amazing predators, completely silent flying, claw-shaped talons and quick, efficient kills. Shame about the chick, but they're easy prey unprotected and without one of the parents... it was a matter of time to be honest.

And owls are one of my favorite birds too.

That must be the number one worst way to be awoken among ospreys. Barely has a chance to realize she wasn't digging into a huge fresh trout all to herself. Two minutes later she has no head.

I,m not going to lie, I,m sitting here watching that baby take his last breath and it,s very difficult, but I do know that Great Horned Owl is hungry and needs to survive😥😥😥😥

Owl had no trouble killing the first one, unprotected chicks are easy prey. Poor little family, the other osprey family I watched didn't fare any better. Four chicks, one fell out of the nest and died, the other three starved because of a storm that prevented dad from hunting properly. :(

God bless the precious babies I pray they are high above us soaring with the other babies! :-( God bless dad and I pray that he will meet a new female & they will have a big beautiful family next season. Why aren't there any videos of GHO falling prey, hunted, nest attack?

The GHO has gotta eat. Sad the chick was it's meal instead of a rat or something. Maybe it's parents will have a chick survive to adulthood next year at a different nesting site.

Where is dad Luther? I've watched other Osprey nest. I've seen at least one of the parents stay at the nest all night long. Poor baby. This is so sad. The Owl going unchallenged at every attack.

Even if the parent arrived at the same time as the owl, the chick was doomed. The owl worked on the neck with its beak while its talons were already deep in the body. If the owl hadn't done any beak work, the talons already fatally injured the body.

So much for all around security.

In falconry a lot of falconers have to watch there bird's very carefully because great horned owls have been known to kill there bird's, this is a good example, there's just no way to hear a owl because they are silent and stealthy

Too many great horned owls around - hear two of them hooting near our home - one of our cats got taken right off the deck one morning. Much restricted outdoor only daytime for the remaining three and slingshot at the ready. (soft pellets to scare off only)

I thought one of the parents always stayed with the chicks. I guess not.

I have more questions. First, it's amazing though it's also sad and your camera work is over. I wonder if this was the second chick then why he isn't there in the night? He should be there laying right beside the last remaining chick. The poor little thing didn't put up any fight at all and he was dead in seconds. Though I don't know how or why. You see the lion takes time to choke out a wildebeest or a zebra. The Hyena and wild dogs start to rip them apart and start eating them while still alive and die in the process. This owl just flew in on it no choking no ripping apart a little shaking head as the nerve was still working and it was over. Oh, well there's always next year. BTW I used to go fishing by Bellwood Lake in the 80s and even enter a few times for the pike fishing and once a perch fishing derby. I love to go there to catch catfish and carp. It's a nice man-made deep lake with hydroelectricity generated there. Kind of a starting point for the Grand River. Empties into Lake Erie just South of Dunville. By hunting we went to the Luther mars area. In the summer by the Elora gorge and jumping from the cliffs but can't do it no more and you get a big fine if they catch you. Few Hollywood movies were filmed there too. 1 famous horror too (I forgot the name)

That's too sad to watch but that's good at least he didn't suffer as much as he could have by a different predator. This is why they are warnings to indigenous people of death like the reaper. Sacred bird the owl.. Never send the photo to them or anyone unless you don't want to hear from them again.
