In the near future, Major (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people’s minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her and stop them before they do it to others. Based on the internationally acclaimed Japanese Manga, “The Ghost in the Shell.”

the voice is amazing, the movement is impressive. almost like his shell is more prone to react from emotion than thought. impulsive things like beating his chest when talking about self defense are fluent, and yet when he just walks it looks like it takes unusual effort, like it doesn't react in the same way. brilliant performance.

This scene is easily the best in the movie and an example of what the entire thing could have been. Michael Pitt's performance and Kuze's character together are absolutely fantastic - in this scene, you can get a sense of the unstable threat Kuze poses, the torment that drives him, and the vulnerability beneath the surface all at once. When he realizes that the Major, this person who he found that is finally someone like him, will kill him to stop his plans instead of becoming his ally, that's a great moment. I wish the movie could have had more of that idea. There were good scenes scattered throughout it, but I feel like it's this scene that really reaches out towards the bigger concepts of the definition of self in a world where the body and mind can freely be modified using technology.

The production/art book mentions that Michael Pitt wrote "pages and pages of backstory" for Kuze to get into the character. That's something I'd enjoy reading if it ever became available - a pipe dream to be sure, but it would be fascinating to see what went into him.

I haven't heard much detail about the director's cut, aside from the cut Tricky appearance. Do you know more? Also, yeah, for a film with as many mistakes as this one has (as much as I appreciate it as a novelty) I would dare to say Cutter is probably the worst part. He's so cliche he isn't even a character. He's Dick Jones played completely straight instead of being satirical.
@illustriousrocket4476
@illustriousrocket4476 6 жыл бұрын
Some of that I've heard before, such as the villains being Section 6; I wonder if this original cut is where the "Hadley Cruz" alias for "Hideo Kuze" that was on Wikipedia for a time pre-release came from. Thank you for the link, I'll need to take some time to read it. EDIT: Finished reading it, I can definitely see the places where things were changed, if nothing else. It does seem a shame that we'll never see that director's cut.

You're really reaching to make this movie sound good. This is nothing more than the cliche moment where the bad guy says to the good guy "We're the same" and the good guy goes "We are NOTHING alike!". That's the same bullshit that has been done in countless of Hollywood movies. This movie is racist whitewashed trash that has almost nothing to do with the source material it is supposedly based on. It is a good thing that it bombed because racist should not be rewarded.

Michael Pitt & Kitano were brilliant in this movie. I wish they'd develop more the connexion between Hideo & Motoko in depth but you can guess and watch GitS: SAC for further info. ScarJo's performance is remarkable too despite the critics. And they actually explained her physical appearance in a pretty decent way. I love this adaptation, of course there are a few flaws such as Batou's actor whose attitude/charisma is nothing similar to the one portrayed on others format nonetheless I have such a great watching this movie.

This movie is staggeringly unfaithful to the original material, this Kuze is far removed from any other interpretation of the character, but I have to admit I do really enjoy him. His speech, his body language, the way he carries himself like a half-working mechanism and speaks like a synthesiser just shy of perfect. It's almost Frankenstein in its aesthetic, just a century or two later.

This scene should of been in the matrix. The film was ahead of its time, just like ghost in the shell. Humans were supposed to be bandwidth of which at the time of the original matrix, not enough people knew about computers or the internet, therefore they opted to portray the people as a battery source, of which they were that and more importantly the massive amount of bandwidth the human brain posses. On the other side, the GITS movie should have kept the puppet master explaining that he acquired a body, and being sentient with a body constitutes him being alive and thus he requests asylum.

I honestly feel the movie would have been 10x better had they stuck with the original Kuze plot from Season 2 of Stand Alone Complex. Trying to do a mash up of the 1st ghost in the shell movie, kuze plot and the end of laughing man story diluted the story of the live-action movie so much. Had they picked one and ran with it, the movie would've had more fleshed out characters and more emotional impact.

I for one believe that there was no whitewashing here. Motoko Kusanagi in the anime is a voluptuous woman with clearly define Mediterranean or European features. The explanation they gave us in my opinion was feasible given the setup and situation. By looking at most of anime designs one can argue that whitewashing emanates from the source material. What it truly bother me was the fact that they stay away from the philosophy that gave birth to such a complex set of events. They did us all a disservice and possibly ruin the universe for others. They need to take the movie and edited again. This goes without mentioning the horrible acting the two antagonists portray.
@DaRunningMan
@DaRunningMan 6 жыл бұрын
What you believe is irrelevant. It is a fact that Kusanagi is Japanese. There is nothing European about her. Why is she white with a name like "Kusanagi Motoko"? You didn't seem to notice that in this whitewashed garbage her name was changed to "Mira Killian". Gee... I wonder why. Japan is homogeneous so it makes no sense for her to be anything other than Japanese. If you actually knew about Ghost in the Shell you would know that anytime someone is in the story that is not Japanese then they are singled out for it. Every white character that has ever appeared in Ghost in the Shell has always been a foreigner and has had other characters point out that they are white. Kusanagi in fact has singled out white people herself in the 1995 animated adaptation which proves she is Japanese and not white. Finally, white characters are drawn differently from the Asian characters in manga and anime. Again, you would know this if you actually knew about anime which you do not. Ghost in the Shell 2017 is a whitewashed racist load of trash that insults the original Ghost in the Shell source material. It barely has anything to do with the source material in fact. It's a bad Robocop remake with a woman instead of a man and badly remade scenes from the 1995 adaptation that are not even in the same context that the 1995 adaptation was working in. A total waste of celluloid.

Having recently watched Arise, I can see that a lot was taken from that version, including the "collective consciousness" network, and her decision not to join it. In fact there isn't a single part of Ghost in the Shell, the manga, both anime films, and every TV series, and even Mamoru Oshii's "Avalon" which did not end up in this film in one form or another. Maybe they tried to cram too much in.

While I am not trying to defend this racist and horrible trash of a movie, you prove with your comment that you know nothing about Ghost in the Shell. Kusanagi DOES show emotion. All you know is the 1995 adaptation (it is NOT the original but an adaptation) and in that Kusanagi is not actual as she normally does and that is noted but the other characters. plaguelock stop defending bad movies and bad acting performances. Scarletts bland robot performance was enough proof that she was wrong for the role to begin with. Plus people who keep making excuses about "it's not an exact translation" or "she is a robot and not a human" are looking for easy excuses not to cast colored people. You guys have a problem with colored people being cast in leading roles. Things are changing and if you don't believe me, look at the box office numbers for Black panther and crazy rich asians.

Indeed she did. It doesn't help to that she has no business playing this role since Kusanagi is NOT white and neither is Batou or Kuze. This movie was whitewashed racist trash.

plaguelock dude the reason you are not gonna win this conversation is 1. Her name is Motoko, it's a Japanese name. Is that so hard to comprehend? 2. The movie was bad. It's less a ghost in the shell film and more a remake of the Matrix. The only difference is that the Matrix was groundbreaking and ghost in the shell was 18 years too late to say anything. Scarlett didn't even give a good acting performance, you are defending mediocrity. My recommendation is to watch the original Robocop (because this film blatantly ripped it off) Blade runner, total recall and the original Ghost in the shell, just so you can be quiet and understand what good sci fi looks like.

+plaguelock "The only reason the original characters were Japanese was because of where the author was from when the original story was written" That's as stupid as saying that the only reason that Batman is a white American is because the people that created Batman were white Americans. You don't know what you are talking about. You know nothing about Ghost in the Shell. And you are not even clever with you thinking that you can turn the tables and calling other people racist for pointing out racism.
