The backside of the block I live in, poorly lit by the orange streetlights, it rained all day but, now, long after midnight, it's only windy and silent. I'm all alone in there, I can go wherever I want and the whole city will be just like that: empty, full of night and the smell of wet asphalt. This is exactly what this song makes me feel like.

The song and scene brings a feeling when you know taking one step will send you to a way that you can’t turn around. I’m sure Motoko was excited and nervous about what the Puppetmaster had in store and the identity that she needed to find would have better light afterwards. Deep down wanting to find a place where she had no suspicions on her identity but to truly feel alive and herself.

"There has never been another GITS like this nor will there ever be". Love this music (I've always loved deep atmospheric synth chords...) and though I haven't seen this in way over 10 years, I do remember thinking the same. Along with stuff like Akira & Ninja Scroll, GITS1 was a true benchmark of quality. The sequels don't compare, and the series (for me) were 80% ruined by the dreaded "anime cuteness syndrome". All the best stuff seemed to come out in the 80's & 90's. And for me anime was over by 2000 (cuteness syndrome & cgi syndrome).

The people who make/direct anime in the modern world are completely out of touch with the core roots that allowed great pieces like this to exist - it is an industry kept afloat by people who grew up consuming anime, and they seek to create the new by regurgitating the superficial aspects of the medium. For example, when people ask 'how can I make works like Nausicaa by Miyazaki', they seek only to make things look and feel like the media they have consumed that they think evokes that material, go and study at university in illustration and animation, yet the overlook the fact that Miyazaki graduated from university with degrees in political science and economics. As Miyazaki said, many people in the anime industry cant make humans because they cant stand to look at other humans. How can we possibly expect anyone in this day and age to truly say something that speaks to something deeper if their entire lives consist of digital consumption, as it necessitates due to industry pressures?
