When 30 year old anime shows/movies from the late 80s and early 90s look visually better,than the modern crap,while they were made with less technology,something is really wrong.

GitS had a coniderable budget and the artistic effort was massive. I also really miss a lot of older animes more visual style--although new shows like dorehedoro manage to use some CG while still having incredibly beautiful environmental art, allowing them to save some budget without ruining the show. But yea really it just comes down to budget. Anime market is hugely saturated and nobody wants to throw a big budget at anyone unfortunately.

Ive started rewatching the series and my biggest issues are yes the story took too long to be established, but also the characters themselves. They don't feel like they are the team that solved the Laughing Man case, or the Individual Eleven, dealt with Kazunda Gouda, or solved the mystery of the Solid State Society... if that makes sense. I know it is supposed to be a sequel series that takes place sometime after GitS:SAC-2ndGig-SSS, but the characters just don't feel it.
@barricadebbb
@barricadebbb 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's kinda off, if the story time line are around arise, then it'll probably make sense, but the team in 2045 seems to be less professional then before series. Also I hope they can give other characters some more love, especially borma and pazu.

Thanks for the review. I just want to clarify a couple of things you mentioned. Spoilers ahead! The abilities these new humans have are technically just mental. The guy that could punch the heads out of people was a former boxer who had the skills to fight, but that injured his arm heavily when he punched his first victim and replaced it with a cybernetic implant. That's why he could perform those physical feats. Also, the 'flipping guy' had no physical enhancements beyond normal, just very quick reflexes and predictive abilities. All superhuman skills were mental. When the Major manages to get him for a moment, she breaks his fingers and confirms he is not enhanced physically. The boy who was flirting with terrorism was also only mentally enhanced, managing to create an app to punish his teacher. The difference between him and the others is that he apparently still has a moral compass and hasn't lost his humanity yet. All the others seem so highly 'evolved' that they no longer care.

That's because they had 2 directors on those episodes. It is clear that the first half episodes were done by Aramaki Shinji, who is a experienced director but never worked on Ghost in the Shell series before, and the latter half episodes were done by Kamiyama Kenji, who directed all the Stand Alone Complex series. It's also interesting to note that this 2045 is direct sequel to the SAC series, ignoring the reboot, Arise series they did a few years ago. They even brought the original voice actors back.

I seen some others saying the first season was basically only the first half of the first season, which makes a lot of sense considering how long it took to get into the main story and how it ended the season. The last 6 episodes really did start to feel like GITS again thankfully, before that it was rather dull. The animation was hard to get used to, by the end i wasn't noticing it as much, but probably only because the story was holding my attention

It's like the animation studios know they can phone in a half hearted product because Netflix is gonna pay them a ton of money anyways. I get that it makes it easier for the animators but come'on. This show is so interesting. Cerebral, imaginative, emotional, and action-packed. What an ending! I don't know how the writers do it. I described the original SAC anime adaptation as the smartest anime I have seen and now SAC 2045 is just the best thinking anime that I have seen in the past lustrum. I understand that this is not a show to watch when you are tired, drained, emotionally unavailable, sleepy, or in a bad place. This is a show to watch when you want to think and pay attention. Really appreciate the fact that the plot took a while to get going because it was both surprising and exciting. In the end, I think it is great to have these kinds of shows that are different from the norm and are a minority in our current entertainment portfolio. They are plot-driven, they do not treat the viewer as dumb, but more importantly, they know how to wink at their target audience.

Has no one ever seen a kung Fu movie? There's a stylistic choice here that is suggesting that when one has 100% control over their body, they can move unpredictably to maximize evasion and economy of motion. You can even see a resemblance to TARS in Interstellar the way it cartwheels towards brand to help get her out from under the beacon on the tidal water world. Don't get me wrong, I laughed that he did it nekid. But it kinda ties into the classical nudity the movies, to accentuate the transcendence of biology (and procreation, therefore sexual intercourse). The post-humans are devoid of primal urges, much how Kusanagi was portrayed in the movies as having a more machine anatomy than a human one. It's an intentional use of the uncanny valley to drive home the fact that they are different.

For the back flip part, I think I liked the fact that he did it nakedly. Because in the show, the cyborgs had much less regard of their body than us normal human. Major broke her whole arm without a thought fighting the tank in the original movie. And she also teased a man about offering her body for his pleasure for some time in the TV series (of course she didn't actually do it). It's one of the theme of the show, the separation of body and mind. What I have problem is why Batou and Major didn't just shoot the idiot who brought naked back flips to a gunfight. Major also did back flips to dodge gunfire from the tank in the original movie. But it was framed in a way that doesn't look stupid and fake. It doesn't look like the tank was holding its' fire so its' target can do cool moves. This time, Batou and Major clearly had the time to shoot him, or just chase him down and beat the crap out of him. It's probably because of budget issue so they couldn't choreograph this shot better, but that's a very cheep excuse.

Yeah but the animation makes it almost unwatchable. Its really really bad. I don't mind that it's CG. Beastard is a good example of good CG. But here you can tell it's cheap and half assed. And a minor detail. But the intro song was terrible. Didn't fit with this universe at all. Really weird decisions on their part. Which is a shame. Because the cast do a wonderful job bringing those characters back. But they just dropped the ball completely on presentation.

I don't think we should be satisfied with this. Settling for anything always leads to a lesser quality product. Or can affect the standards of a brand, genre or culture. This looks like something that would've only been impressive in 2000. The Voice work is appreciated and it has a story. It also has slow pacing, some unecessary characters and a very anti-climatic cliffhanger. But the overall quality makes this Ghost in the Shell Lite at best. People are saying it's better than that shit live action adaptation. But I don't want that to be the Standard that fans go by.

As mentioned, the 1st installment season of Stand Alone complex had not yet honed in on its animation style. Much of this is due to both budget and timeframe. This Netflix series certain has fallen to those constraints which is why they've gone with an all cgi approach. Production IG is one of the best Japanimation studios to date and they were among the first to implement cg into their anime productions. Finding what worked best between the two mediums mixed. so what i gather from this series is that time deadlines where going to be a major issue. Ghost in the shell is also typically a fore runner when it comes to stories , arcs, and overall pacing , so if theirs issues with this new series, ide chuck it up to them trying their best to adapt to budget and deadline constraints. We always want something to be perfect, but we never take into account the time necessary to actually do a great job. Everyone one wants everything perfect but 20 times faster, not realizing that such productions heck , everything! is already mind boggling fast in comparison to the pace of things just a few decades ago. essentially the masses have become arrogant ignorant spoiled assholes. Remember those skits of the "are we their yet!!??" kids.. well now theyre adults, still whining about everything. so.. as for this new gits, i see its not perfect but overall im just glad its a property that has continued on, because in all its body of works , its some of the best stuff out their.

I think the difference between Clone Wars and then a show like this is that the CW artists were classically trained in 2D animation. I remember hearing stories from classical animators getting invited to 3D animation schools to do lectures only to discover that they didn't teach the students anything about animation (Edit: Or anatomy). It was just all about learning how to use the programs. That's some years ago though and some places are probably catching on that they screwed up in their priorities.

If it wasn't for the dub voice actors of the first SAC coming back this would have been harder for me to enjoy. The characters seem to be continuations of their SAC and having the old cast really helped me look past most of the CGI especially in the 2nd half of this season. Pros: It was very nice to hear the Major, Batou and Togusa original VAs since those are versions I grew up with. Every time they were on screen I listened and watched intently. The Batou Bank Robbery episode was definitely my favorite episode of the season. The Tachikomas were perfect no complaints. For the Cons side, when I saw in the credits that there were two directors I had a feeling something was going to be disjointed. Then watching the first six episodes and latter six made that very evident. First half of the season feels like movie adventure, while the second half feels more closer to the original SAC first season. Also I miss the Yoko Kanno score and the 2D looks of the characters . I'm looking forward to season 2 though, that was a hell of a cliffhanger.

I watched and finished it literally 2 days ago! most of my thoughts are exactly the same as Chris, I think ghost in the shell starts in the 6th or 7th episode and the first 6 are some kind of prologue that is totally unnecessary but kinda gives context if you remember the ending of the other stand alone complex series. the English version has the original voice actors that I grew up with since 1995 and it's a great thing to listen to. I like how the relationship and the comradely is there too! I felt that Yoko Kano music was missing from this show and made the expirience poorer for it. Josh Leitzel Yeah, Lupin is a better example of straight CG style (like the new GITS) but done really well. Daniel Rowson Yeah, that’s a valid distinction. When people are referring to CG anime they usually mean anime that attempts to emulate 2D aesthetics and techniques specifically. Because honestly while 3D anime in the television space is still going through growing pains, 3D Japanese animated films in general have looked pretty good for a while now. There were the Doraemon and Rudolph the Cat film many years back for example that looked very nice. Orange is definitely leading the charge in 3D tv anime, though there’s still a handful of questionable moments in those shows for me. Really whenever the frame rate gets down to around 4fps it gets pretty jarring. I hope they iron that out over time. Personally I would’ve loved if Beastars would have been entirely stop-motion animated after seeing the amazing opening!

If you look at something made by the studio that makes BEASTARS, they truly embrace making a 3D anime while making it feel very good and similar to a 2D anime. I have to say the cg anime did throw me off at first, but during the course of the show, I was more focused on the story line as I still have the flavor of the "laughing man" story line in my mouth. The first episode threw me off as it was just action and I'm trying to connect what's going on to initially. I did really get what I was looking for until Togusa is reintroduced into the story. Not to spoil anything but I felt some kind of way about the last episode and the piece of literature one character was reading. I read that book last summer. In the previous series, it was "Catcher In The Rye." There is, despite all else , always something particularly special pay attention to with this anime series. This in itself makes up for it not being in 2d. I love a good story with a message, especially if I can relate to it. And yes, the music could be better when you think about the music of the previous releases, but I can't complain about that when my attention is more so on the story itself than anything. Going back to the cgi thing for a moment..it did take me back to the ps 2 game(which was awesome and I own a copy too). I think they just wanted to try something different for whatever reason, but a wise saying is, "if it isn't broke, don't fix it." Anime is supposed to be , well, animated. An all Cgi anime isn't anime really. It's something else. Yet , as person whom had followed both the movies and the series since its start in the late 90s, I still enjoyed season one of this. I look forward to more. The voice acting was 100 percent awesome. Listening to this anime through some nice headphones was a treat to my ears.

Hi Chris, Just saw one of your old Movie goers rant videos. Big fan of your work, so I wrote this in response. Your last movie goers rant video was several years ago, so I figured I would post it in your latest movie review instead: Man...I feel for you. I am an avid fan of your videos. I also typically agree with your analysis on film. I have a ritual of watching a movie in the theater and then immediately watching your video review of the film (my wife hates talking about movies after watching them with me). Regarding going to movies where patrons verbally react to what is on the screen is actually just a different kind of movie going experience. There are many cultures that prefer watching films in this environment. For some people, it heightens certain elements of the film (think sing-alongs and The Rocky Horror Picture Show). Bollywood films are often times similar to this. Imagine going to a Bollywood movie and when the big blockbuster song in the movie comes on people are so moved by it they get out of their chairs and start dancing in the isles. It's like a big party with the movie. For those kind of movies, frankly it adds to the experience. And they are dancing because they are fully immersed in the film in this situation. These people also love movies, just like us. But the movie in this case simply calls for a different kind of viewing experience. Without the dancing in the isles, the Bollywood movie just might not be quite so memorable. When I saw Kill Bill for the first time, I saw it on opening night in a huge, packed theater that was a bit noisy as the movie started. People getting settled in their seats, candy wrappers making noise, and people lightly whispering to each other as they waited. But when Uma Thurman came on the screen with those famous words, "Bill, it's your baby...bang!", all of a sudden the noisy movie theater became completely silent, as everyone was in shock and the guitar played in the intro. It was the perfect experience, and the best way IMO to experience that opening sequence. I do not get that same experience when I watch that opening scene by myself in my house. Imagine riding on a theme park roller coaster by yourself, and being asked not to make a sound. Would it be as enjoyable as being on that same roller coaster full of other patrons screaming in enjoyment at every crest and bend? Now I get it, going to movies is your job. You need to pay full attention to the film as you need to analyze the film. And you are doing this for us. And I very much appreciate all of your hard work and sacrifice for this. For you doing this, these other elements are clearly distractions. And I agree that if I have a deadline and need to release an analysis on a film, I would not like people distracting me. So you are forced into these situations when you cannot actually enjoy them for what they are. I am sorry about this, and hope people respect your wishes more in the theater. Either way, hang in there man. I am a fan of your work and will continue to watch your videos. So please keep them coming, and hopefully going forward folks will be a bit more considerate of movie goers in your predicament, and respect your wishes to be quiet. Thanks, Nitin

It’s good in every way but the bad guy does absolutely nothing for me. The plot goes blah in the end it’s just hoping the characters survive decent not as good as some but not bad.

I really like this show. And I really can appreciate that this type of animation can capture that anime feel even if right now it doesnt look that good. The team who worked on this did a great job I think. If money was the limiting factor, the feel of the animation was smooth, the hits felt heavy, it wasnt uncanny and characters could properly express emotion. and considering Netflix is pioneering this animation style when it largely hasnt been touched since like the early 2000s probably is something to commend as well.

Sorry but I think you failed a bit on the research part: They don't just plan to do a second season, there has always been planned to be 24 episodes. It's just Netflix's stupid schedule. Second: You forget to mention Kenji Kamiyama is back as show runners and diractor.

@@RockSolitude That's your opinion, I think it's fine, the biggest problem I have other than the presentation is simply that they spend too much time on the first arc, it could be cut to 4 episodes and paced much better, other than that I am pretty happy with what we got, especially with the latter half starting with epeisod7.
@RockSolitude
@RockSolitude 4 жыл бұрын
@@T2266 point is it doesn't matter if he mentions who's directing it or not, it doesn't change what we got in the end, nor would it make it any better retroactively. Its no wonder GitS has had such a horrible spate in recent years when the standards and expectations are this low and its audience this easy to let it slide. Might as well just recycle one of the Appleseed OVAs, split it into 12 episodes and slap an imitation GitS skin on it at this point... oh wait. You could cut out the first 6 or 7 episodes and lose literally nothing of value to the first season. That being said, the tone, style, storyboarding and writing is largely the same between the first and second halves (as in the first half of the season set the pattern which follows through the second half). Anyways, blaming netflix for the 12 episode run (and the show being horribly written/designed/planned/packaged/optimized for it) feels a bit of a cop out.

I'm not surprised at all that it takes half the season to get to any real plot. There was a reason why both seasons of the original series were able to be cut down into a pair of OVA's.

In my opinion, the art style isn't great compared to the strong look the original Stand Alone Complex. The art style is too soft and cute. The artist also is unable to take critisim, especially when its same face syndrome. I absolutely loved Motoko's original sac, she looked strong but still maintained femininity so its a shame to see her small and cute like.

This breaks my heart as I know the artist personally who did the art direction. He worked really hard on the project with most of the same artist he worked with who helped make his own anime, “Birthday Wonderland”. And to see people shit on it is kind of hard to read. It wasn’t his decision to go 3D, but they wanted his art style but knew the action scenes would be cost effective if they didn’t go the 3D route. Again, don’t shit on the team that worked so hard to deliver this story. There’s a lot of 3D anime (Ajin, Beserk, Beastars) that have done well with this style. Just my take on it, albeit biased.
@fumomofumosarum5893
@fumomofumosarum5893 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to tell you, but everyone hated Berserk the 3D animated show... Never heard of Ajin. But Beastars is okay. But if you compare a cheap 3D anime side by side with a beautiful hand drawn / hand animated 2D original - negative feedback is a given. Look what they were up against! It's a battle that can barely be won, if you don't have really free funds and free time and high skill.

JP Sarri Reviews How is he a snob? Just because you don’t like the visuals doesn’t mean you’re disrespecting the artist. The dude OP is talking about mainly consulted on character designs, and BW too they were his only input. I don’t trust that they personally know him.
@jpsarri
@jpsarri 4 жыл бұрын
Josh Leitzel are you also a snob? Stuckman always talks about how much he loves anime, but the truth of the matter is that he knows little about it. Like most westerners (myself included) he believes himself an authority of Japanese culture only because he has watched a few poorly translated anime here and there. The same stuff everyone watches and feels entitled to. The more I watch his reviews, the more I realize how little substance they have. He always approaches every movie franchise whether super heroes, Star Wars, sci-fi, etc. with the same preconceived notions and childhood bias. His opinion always aligns with the opinion of others. He praises or hates whatever the sheep mentality dictates. He never changes. Unfortunately, going to film school does not make anyone a film expert.
@JoshLeitzel
@JoshLeitzel 4 жыл бұрын
When has he ever claimed to be an expert on Japanese culture? Watching anime doesn’t have anything to do with that. You’re exhibiting textbook features of snobbery. Not everybody has time to watch dozens of anime per month. Nothing in his critique had to do with childhood nostalgia. No one’s obligated to be a contrarian. Unsubscribe if his opinions upset you that much.
