Origa was (sadly she passed away not so long ago) a Russian singer who moved to Japan. I remember how everybody in school were confused why anime intro had Russian lyrics back then

I have fond memories of staying up watching tv into the middle of the night on adult swim as a 11-12 year old and watching ghost in the shell. The whole show and especially the opening had such a profound enigmatic aura to me (partly because I had no idea what was going on) but I thought it was very intriguing. Now that I'm older and I watch it seriously, it really is a great show. A bit dense on the sci-fi but surprisingly coherent. This opening is awesome. This and Elfen Lied have such amazing atmosphere once you watch the show.

+David Medina (Rico) Because it's the future and humanity is trying to transcend the limitations of a human body, such as a finite lifespan, physical disabilities, and all death being final. The majority of humanity wishes to become cybernetic to be rid of this. One of the members of Section 9 is a rare example of someone who is completely human physically. No cyberization. Every organ is the original. The Major, the woman you saw here, is completely cyberized, and was as a child. The doll is from her childhood, when she tried to hold it and had the same issues real-life people with robot limbs have (yes, they exist). She tried to hold something in a closed hand without crushing it. Like most real-life people with robot arms, she couldn't control how much force the hand applied, and it crushed her doll. It's confirmed as the first time she ever cried about her robot arm. Because of the whole "robot" thing, humans who can afford to have cyberization and don't suffer the side-effects tend to have far longer lives, since machines may have a far shorter life span than humans (In real life, humans can live for a little longer than a century, and it's rare for this to happen. Our technology is lucky if it lives 5 years.) but machine parts can be hot-swapped (removed and replaced without deactivating the entire structure, in this case the human) with only the small penalty of relearning how to use the part. The spider-tanks are known as Tachikoma. This is their name and their model. They have the personality and voice of a small human child, yet despite their lack of streetsmarts (because they think like children), they tend to act with more wisdom. It's confirmed that, even though they can move themselves to other shells (the body for the tank), it's still a matter of being able to do that before dying, and the fear of death is more than real, because of humanity's belief that only humans have souls. Some members of Section 9 treat the Tachikoma (there are many of them, but Japanese uses context to determine plurality, so the plural form of Tachikoma is also Tachikoma) as if they were mentoring the Tachikoma as a student in an elementary school. Section 9 is reluctant to believe that Tachikoma do not also have souls. While humans strive for cyberization, Tachikoma tend to wish that they were human. Unlike humans, who can become cybernetic whenever they please, even if it is irreversible, Tachikoma can never become human. It will never happen. They composed their own nursery rhyme about what they would do if they were human. It's a cheery melody, but then you realize it's a group of robots who have a child's mind and are trapped as a robot that hardly anyone considers alive. They are in the same boat as humans with a physical disability that they COULDN'T adapt to. Think of it like this. Maybe you suffer from paralysis. Maybe you have a learning disability. Perhaps you're like me and physically cannot feel emotion despite knowing exactly what it is and what it does to someone. Just as I would see the potential for being able to feel joy even if it meant I would suffer at times too, The Tachikoma would gladly give up their ability to cheat final death by jumping, live as long as they pleased, and dual wield miniguns while skating on spider-legs, if it meant they could be human.

@@lyberth4366 That's because The Laughing Man is not just a person, but also a mastermind,it can be everyone, everywhere at anytime it wants, almost no one saw its face and nobody knows who lt is,it's been missing for 5 years and now lt came back not just as a terrorist but also a savior, killing those who stands in its way, inspiring those to with its offers and propositions, manipulating those to join it and create a world with no wars,no politics,no laws and no restrictions, only peace, order and control,he's basically Light Yagami from Death Note but as a villain (which he already is)so yeah that's "The Laughing Man Arc”i know so far, pretty interesting if I say so myself.

That wasn't Toonami. Toonami BARELY had anything rated higher than T between 1997 and its cancelation in 2008. Back then, it was a Saturday evening programming block, and it really couldn't get any more mature than that. Inuyasha was about the most mature anime Toonami had, but it didn't have it for long. Adult Swim's programming had a bunch of M-rated Anime among its lineup between 2000 and 2010. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Inuyasha, Blue Gender, FLCL, Full Metal Alchemist [the original anime], Bleach, Samurai Champloo, Eureka Seven. All played between reruns of Family Guy, Home Movies, Futurama, and Space Ghost. Wasn't until Adult Swim's own original programming started to grow in popularity that the anime became rarer on [AS]. Then Toonami was relaunched as a Saturday Night/Early Sunday Morning block

Still such a solid opening, with one of the best anime tracks around. I always loved GitS because it felt like 15 minutes in the future, just around the corner. I'll be honest, I really don't have any interest in watching the new movie. They've explicitly stated that the main character won't even be Motoko Kusanagi. Not only is she being played by Scarlet Johansson, but she's only ever going to be called "The Major". So, for all intents and purposes, she's not Motoko.

Florence MacKenna when did they state its not Mokoto Kusunagi? Also, why is Scarlett playing her a bad thing? Shes a good actress. They wouldn't hire her unless they wanted the movie to succeed because of how big her name is. Also, if its because she isn't Japanese, then please stop. Gigguk from the Anime Zone already brought this forward. So, please explain otherwise.

@Ron. H. you mentioned that ghost in the shell translates to mobile armored riot police. That doesn't make a lot of sense. Im just a little confused what your trying to prove here. Mobile armored riot police is the Japanese title . The title ghost in the shell has nothing to do with mobile armored riot police. That just sounds silly.

For those curious I’ll toss this out there. When she was fully organic and still a child the Major was one of 2 survivors of a horrible plane crash. The young boy was almost nonfunctional except for his hand. A young Motoko Kusanagi was all but dead so they did a full body replacement to save her life ( the first of several she would require over her life). Her body was age appropriate and she tried to convince the boy to undergo the procedure. He did eventually but they lost contact. The broken doll is supposed to represent the Major’s lost childhood and loss of innocence. There’s an episode where a woman in an antique store explains it with the 2 child cyborg bodies which do not have brain cases fitted anymore. It’s implied the Major didn’t get a choice to go full body as she was near death and doctors felt it was the only way to save her life

I'm immensely jealous of everyone here reflecting on staying up late as kids to watch this. Whenever Adult Swim began, King of the Hill would air first, always. And it just never interested me, so I assumed that the whole block would be like that until next morning and I'd just tune out and do something else with my time. God damn I had no idea what I was missing. I know for a fact that younger me would have been completely mesmerized by this.
