Is GHOST is a WANNABE Metal band...? From the data I've seen, there's about a 50/50 split opinion on the matter. Hardcore metal enthusiasts claim GHOST doesn't posses enough heavy guitar sounds and aggressive vocals to be considered METAL. In this video we'll be watching the official video for the track, "CIRICE", which is the old english word for "CHURCH." It deals with deep themes of belonging, cults and spirituality. The question is, will METALHEADS GHOST this song, or will it be accepted as part of the heavy metal cannon? Ghost, also formerly known as Ghost B.C. in the United States, is a Swedish rock band that was formed in Linköping in 2006.

I don't really care if they are metal or not. I really connect with their music and I think they're skilled musicians. They have some songs that are undeniably metal, they have some that are more hard-rock, and they even have some that are closer to pop or EDM. I think a lot of people think they're trying to be metal. I think they're trying to be their own thing, which is something that is clearly inspired by metal at the very least.

Oh, and btw... if you're interested in the "lore" behind the act, it's basically this: There's this ancient satanic cult called "The Ministry", which wanted to spread the word of Satan in the most effective way available. In the late 60's/early 70's, since Rock music was on a global hype, they decided to spread the word that way, founding a rock band called Ghost. The lead singer would always have the title of "Papa" (which means pope). The first one was called Papa Nihil (the one we see earning the face paint and the white eye in 'Dance Macabre' video). Following the downfall of Rock, Ghost went in the shadows and was never seen again... until 2010, when the band suddenly reappears, now with a new lead singer: Papa Emeritus I (eldest son of Papa Nihil) releasing the first album (Opus Eponymous). After that, each album has a new frontman. That being said, we had Papa Emeritus II (younger brother of the previous one) in 'Infestissuman' (2013), Papa Emeritus III (youngest of the brothers) in 'Meliora' (2015) and then all 3 were mysteriously murdered, leaving the frontman spot open, but no more Nihil sons to fill in. Because of that, they were forced to, for the first time, use someone out of the bloodline, and, as so, he couldn't be called "papa". So we had Cardinal Copia for the 4th album ('Prequelle', 2018). Papa Nihil dies onstage and now, with the old leader dead, Sister Imperator (the woman we see initiating Nihil in 'Dance Macabre') promoted Cardinal Copia to papa, officially named Papa Emeritus IV and he was the frontman for the 5th and current album, "Impera', from 2022. The music video for the song 'Kiss The Go Goat' (supposedly a song from the old days when the band was formed in the 60's) reveals us some details that fill some holes in the plot. Back then, Nihil and Imperator were lovers, but as he was becoming a rockstar, he was getting too much attention from his female fans and for that reason they broke up. Sister Imperator was pregnant at that time, but never told him. Now, in current days, she was actually the one who ordered all Nihil's sons to be killed, so she could point someone new to the role and that someone was Cardinal Copia, her and Nihil's bastard son. That way she got her revenge and at the same time could put his bastard son in his place of right, as papa and leader of the band. Obviously, all that is just fiction and was being told and revealed to us slowly through the years by the band in all sorts of media (specially short lore videos they release on the band's KZfaq channel). The lead singer behind the mask (all of the masks), songwriter and creator of it all is Tobias Forge. Albums are always conceptual too. The first 3 were 3 parts of a same story. 'Opus Eponymous' is about the annunciation of the Antichrist coming to Earth. 'Infestissuman' is about his birth and first contact with mankind. 'Meliora' is about the relationship between him and men growing stronger and stronger, to the point we reach the absolute absence of God. The next 2 had a new concept of their own. 'Prequelle' compared faith and blind beliefs to a plague, fast spreading and dangerous (having the Black Plague as the conceptual background). And finally, 'Impera' is about the mankind's fetish for power and how frail it is. It takes empires as an example, since every single one of them throughout history has risen and then fallen. Never failed and will never fail, so also modern empires, no matter how much they seem to be unbreakable, will eventually fall. It's just a matter of time. It's simply good entertainment.

I'd say it's the way Metal has been distorted as a term in the recent years, if this released at the same time as Priest in the late 70's it would 100% be considered Metal. And that's the sort of vibe they're going for I'd say, a more classical form of Metal but with some twists that still make them stand out from the masses. Trust me, the first time I heard Ghost I felt disappointed, like it wasn't enough, but over time it's grown on me and I've come to realize that the whole way people think about "Metal" when calling these guys not Metal is ignorant to the fact that the whole genre of Metal has such a huge spectrum of different sounds of which definitely this fits into. Moral of the story is: You're allowed to not like the songs, but don't say something isn't what it's meant to be just based on that alone.

Asking if Ghost is a metal band (or "wannabe metal band") is like asking if Queen is. Neither of them are, yet there are elements of both bands that make them highly enjoyed and appreciated by a certain sector of the metal music community. We tend to hear rather heavy guitar sounds in music well outside of the traditional metal genres nowadays. For the record: I like Ghost, listen to them all the time.

I agree that Ghost is like a continuation of Bowie, Cooper, Manson etc. This song is definitely metal. A dark riff, that would hold up along side Black Sabbath riffs. Clear vocals are acceptable in metal, Bruce Dickinson and Ozzy Ozbourne exist. I have heard other Ghost songs that aren't metal, but really well done hard rock. While not commonly done, there is no reason that a band can do some songs that are metal and some that are definitely not metal.

Dude. Well done. I agree about mood playing a large role in one's choice of music at a given time. Is Ghost 'metal'? I dunno... metal used to be about embracing individuality, channeling aggression, strangeness and other shit that 'mainstream' people shied away from. Was Black Sabbath metal? Various Ghost songs remind me of Sabbath (and BOC, as another comment mentioned) tbh. You wore a Priest hat in the video, and there are quite a few Priest tunes that simply wouldn't fit in whatever 'modern' interpretation of 'metal' some people seem to have. Screw that. We have many flavors, one for every mood. From screaming riffs that make your ears bleed to dark and contemplative moments, from head-banging slam-dances to lyrics that send your brain on a trip. That... is Metal. Thanks for the awesome videos, man. From an old metal head who's fingers are too damned arthritic to keep up with many of your lessons. Keep it up!

In 1975 my brother was babysitting me on a Friday night. He went outside at around 11pm to connect our bass boat to the truck for a fishing trip the next morning. He came running back inside in a panic, told me to hide, grabbed a shotgun, and ran back outside. After a little while he came back inside and got me. We went outside and about 300 yards away there was a glowing blue metallic ball above some trees. It would zip back and forth then go down and out of sight in a T pattern. It appeared to be about 15 feet in diameter more or less. He called a friend of his nearby and told him to get a gun and camera ready and we were coming to get him. As soon as we pulled out on the road this thing instantly zipped over and was right above the truck about 20 feet above us. The engine died so we couldn`t drive away. He shoved me down into the floor of the truck and got out and aimed the gun at it. It instantly zipped straight up into the sky and vanished. Nobody answered the door at his friend`s house so we left. We ran into another guy he knew after going down the road closer to where we`d seen it hovering over the trees. The time should have been no later than 15 minutes after midnight but the guy told us it was after 3am. In 1999 I was fishing at night around 11pm on the Louisiana side of the Sabine river. I was just checking a catfishing spot in a bay beside the river with rods because the water was rising and the catfish usually start biting in that area when the river rises. I had planned to get back to the boat dock in our yard before midnight because a TV show I planned to watch was coming on. If the catfish were biting I planned to put out trotlines and hoop nets the next day to catch fish to sell. Right after I tied the boat up and threw out my rods two huge rectangle shaped things way bigger than mobile homes appeared in a cow pasture down the river. They were flying (more like floating) along some power lines, one on either side, and slowly coming towards me. Each of them had four squares of soft yellowish/white light on the front that covered the entire front except for black borders around them. I turned off my light and reeled in my rods, cranked the motor, and started puttering as fast as I could safely go in the dark towards a canal leading back to our boat dock. I had to go towards these things which were slowly coming towards me so I was about to panic. One started going up and the other down as the four square panels of light began to turn into squares inside squares until they became very bright and pretty brilliant sparkling dots of multicolored lights. Then they blinked off and vanished. They never made any sounds. I remember on the way out there while in the canal seeing a very quick flash of colors to my right through the fog in the trees but it was dim and I assumed it came from a spotlight beam on the other side of the island. When I reached the boat dock only minutes later my girlfriend was standing there looking very upset. She told me it was after 5am. It should have been just after 11pm. I never went fishing out there again and I normally fished several times a week. This encounter left me with a feeling of dread I can`t explain because what I saw was beautiful. I`m actually afraid to go camping alone and have never gone fishing alone at night since. The frustration of wondering but not knowing what happened to me is intense and has only increased over time. We see countless crazy stories like this on the internet and if only 10% of them are true then our current "understanding" of science and physics is very wrong. I suspect that government officials do understand many science and physics "mysteries" far more than they admit and have hidden many wonderful discoveries that could explain a lot of these bizarre experiences people keep reporting because terrorists could use this knowledge to do great harm. I`ve seen a lot more that this and there are mutiple types. I`ve seen extremely bright golden orbs go all the way across the daytime sky much faster than the Space Shuttles I`ve seen pass over to land in Florida. I`ve seen the very large triangles slowly pass over that had a fog or plasma glow around them. Most of the ones I`ve seen were white orbs, usually in groups. I`m disgusted by how most scientists respond to my questions about these things. Thank God this man isn`t like that!

It’s hard to call them strictly a metal band but they do have some metal-adjacent songs, cirice being a good example. As someone who mostly likes heavier shit I think ghost is decent, no more gimmicky than black metal bands anyway

They are what they are and aren’t asking permission to mix up genres. But they aren’t “wannabe” metal, as there is no sign they want to get metal. They want to make good, fun tunes and they succeed at that.

They could easily be a metal band, but they never give up that spooky rock vibe (which could be hard to pull off if strictly metal, I mean secular haze as a metal song wouldn't be the same)

The cross in the music video I looked it up here’s the info. In Christianity, it is associated with the martyrdom of Peter the Apostle. The symbol originates from the Catholic tradition that when sentenced to death, Peter requested that his cross be upside down, as he felt unworthy of being crucified in the same manner as Jesus. Found resources was safari

the older stuff i'd consider metal, their newer stuff is everything and anything. It's a mix of this and that with a bit of something else sprinkled on top. you can hear influences from all kinds of past great metal and Rock bands from the 70s and 80s.

If you go in expecting modern* metal. They are definitely inspired by old bands like sabbath, preist, maiden that type of stuff. I really enjoy them because I feel like the modern metal of today isn’t really the best. To me it just feels like they are reviving the music that I really enjoy

Don't care what self appointed Gatekeepers think about Ghost. They transcend genres and can write and play circles around other bands. Their music connects, is gaining an even bigger audience, which makes the haters even more mad, and it's great. I've been going to Ghost shows since before Cirice came out with the original band members and they keep growing and getting better.

I always love how people just assume they are something that they never truly wanted to be. Ghost is a mix of some metal elements and classic 70s 80s rock mixed with satanic lyrics and some more soft emotional vibes that can absolutely kick ass. Yes it’s an love or hate thing but Cmon just appreciate it for what it is and the work behind it. Not everything that’s satanic is automatically heavy metal or death metal. And if you want a bit more heavy stuff listen to songs like mummy dust, faith or twenties. They have something for everyone. For me Tobias Alias Mr.Ghost is an absolute mastermind and genius. But too each there own

I never really understood this "fight" about Ghost being Metal or not, because they've NEVER claimed to be haha. General media did, but general media usually classifies anything heavier than Imagine Dragons as "hard Rock/Metal" anyways. Ghost is just a fucking great Rock band with an awesome versatility. They're just bringing back two cool things Rock music used to have back then and was kinda fading away with time: theatricality and the infamous "flirting with Satan". And the best part is they're doing it backed by really well written music and that's what really matters. The "tr00 headbangers" taking it all so seriously and losing their shit is just sad and hilarious at the same time hahaha. You got them right really quick at a first listening. That shows wisdom, a very rare thing nowadays. Nice and smooth reaction! *clap*
