GHOSTBUSTERS
A history and timeline of the numerous attempts to complete a Ghostbusters trilogy. Notably "Ghostbusters III: Hell-Bent" and "Ghostbusters: Alive Again!"
Ghostbusters, released in 1984, is one of Columbia Pictures' highest grossing films ever, and became a cultural phenomenon in it's own right.
Directed by Ivan Reitman, it's the story of three parapsychologists; Ray Stantz, played by Dan Aykroyd, Egon Spengler, played by the late and great Harold Ramis, and Peter Venkman played by Bill Murray, who are fired from their academic jobs. There's something strange in the neighbourhood and so they start a private firm, "Ghostbusters." They hire a colleague, Winston Zeddemore, played by Ernie Hudson and then they save the world!
Ghostbusters Afterlife is released November 21st 2021.

@@deebo1339 We know that, but apart from Akroyd, Ernie Hudson is the only other actor that really wants to do Ghostbusters. Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman seemed sometimes interested, sometimes not, and Bill Murray was just straight up weird about it. It was kinda perfect that Ray/Akroyd and Winston/Hudson were still the two guys doing birthday parties in GB 2, since in real life they are the ones still kinda into the whole thing while others are half way into it or just too cool for the franchise.

I enjoyed it as a child but as an adult I've never felt any desire to rewatch it, unlike the first one. In hindsight I think the villain of the second was a bit of a tonal mismatch that brought the experience down a bit. Combined with the disappointing box office performance I can understand Bill being reluctant to do another as it might have reflected poorly on him as an actor and leading man, plus he has to be motivated since the money wouldn't be that big of a deal to him.

An artist, especially a good one, is their own worst critic. In Murray’s case, he just didn’t want to ruin the legacy of the first film for another cash grab. Film is one of those rare art forms that an artist/actor can get away with making something completely different, i.e a franchise and be ok. Continuing to make sequels on a particular film puts them in the same position as a musical artist where the next project will be compared with the previous one and vice versa. Thriller (Michael Jackson), Purple Rain (Prince), Songs In The Key Of Life (Stevie Wonder), Appetite For Destruction (Guns N Roses), Toys In The Attic (Aerosmith), Jazz (Queen), Sons Of Soul (Tony! Toni! Tone’!), No Jacket Required (Phil Collins), The Blueprint (Jay Z), The Art Of War (Bone Thugs N Harmony), Heartbreak (New Edition), The 20/20 Experience (Justin Timberlake), Confessions (Usher), Rhythm Nation 1814 (Janet Jackson), Graduation (Kanye West), and Pages of Life Chapters 1 & 2 (Fred Hammond) can’t be topped by said artist no matter how much music they put out afterwards. I’m sure Murray feels the same about Ghostbusters and want to be left alone about it. 🤣
@white-dragon4424
@white-dragon4424 2 жыл бұрын
I get the feeling that Murray is just like me. He hates milking great movies. The first one was always supposed to be a one off. Anything afterwards is just a desperate attempt by a greedy studio to milk it for profits. It's like if they tried to make a sequel to a movie like El Cid called "El Cid 2: Back from the Dead".

Poor Dan Ackroyd, he's been so passionate about this franchise over the years, and his original idea for a transdimensional Ghostbusters team predates the original 1984 film and as a paranormal sci-fi idea in this era of multi-platform franchise storytelling... you'd think a green light would be a no brainer. I'm glad they've set the new one around Egon's grandkids and I have a good feeling about it.

Not to be totally sick, but if Chris Farley played a ghost or a zombie currently in anything, that might be a hit as well. They managed to hijack images of dead actors for some things, maybe his brother could play him underneath and the overlay could be an image more like him, its all pretty macabre, making a puppet out of a dead actor. I always noticed that too. The Real Ghostbusters cartoon respected his character better than the movies did in my opinion. The movies kinda treated him like a third wheel. But honestly his character could have been written a lot better. I believe the Ghostbusters novelization had far more of his backstory that was subsequently written out of the script. He was fresh out of the USAF, former EOD and looking for a job. His character represented us, an everyman thrown in to a world of unknowns and technical jargon. I still hold on to the belief that the real reason Bill turned down GB3 so many times was because of his fallout with Harold during filming Groundhog Day. The video game was perfectly fine because he could simply record his lines without having to be in the same place Harold was. Harold's daughter even mentioned how they never talked for years and how it took a toll on Harold over time. I'm happy knowing Bill and Harold made amends in private before Harold crossed over though.

Hard to believe that after the 2nd film released, in the period of 1990 to 2014, this 3rd Ghostbusters film was struggling to get it off the ground. From various film scripts, to industry insiders wondered if this film will ever happen, to Bill Murray himself being asked the same burning question “will they’ll be a another one?” It was a development mess. With now an official video game and… a disastrous 2016 film reboot, the film was finally off the ground. Along with an untimely passing of Harold Ramis, It’s just as apparent to finish what has started and bring everyone back to the fold. Seeing Bill, Dan & Ernie (along with Annie and Sigourney) back together on the screen after over 3 decades in their outfits and their photon packs brought a big smile to my face along with the easter eggs. “Afterlife” was not only bittersweet 3rd installment, but it also brought a lot of closure to this franchise & to its worldwide fandom. Jason Reitman did his father proud and gave it weight and heart to this film. As a fan of this franchise, Thank you to Jason, Ivan, the cast (the original and the new) for finally bringing this long awaited 3rd installment to fruition. It’s now a trilogy and we can close the chapter on this film and start moving forward with this franchise and honor its legacy, but at end of the day, It took a group of parapsychologists and a new employee to change the world. For Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, Egon Spengler & Winston Zeddemore, they’re the brave, the best, the beautiful, the only…. #Ghostbusters.

The Ghostbusters game in 2009 is the sequel everyone who wanted a sequel to Ghostbusters II. Has the four Ghostbusters back and you play as a next generation Ghostbuster, which follows the passing on the baton thing Dan Ackroyd talked about for years now. It’s also nice that Bill Murray did the game at all considering the fact he seemingly hates sequels and only did Ghostbusters II because they offered him and others more money than the first film, while never writing off Ghostbusters III entirely, but the script needed to be good and I guess Dan Ackroyd never sent him a script that he saw being good.

I think my best takeaway from this project’s tenure in development hell is simply that creativity won out in the end. The detour that Sony took with the “Ghost Corps” approach thankfully went down in flames after the 2016 reboot tanked. Don’t get me wrong, Lord and Miller, the Russos, and some of the creatives involved are very talented, but the entire premise of a REBOOTED timeline is moronic. The issue also becomes FAR more apparent when you follow Sony’s internal politics at the time. The 2014 E-mail leaks painted a troubling picture of a studio rife with ego, incompetence, stupidity, and outright cruelty, and this would have creatively tanked that universe. Now that people like Amy Pascal and Paul Feig are out of the picture, I have far more confidence in the future of this property.

It's amazing how the studio went from having no interest in a Ghostbusters 3 to suddenly wanting to do a whole cinematic universe. I don't know. That was a sequel to the Real Ghostbusters, which wasn't canon to the movies. You didn’t even mention the as-of-yet unmade ANIMATED Ghostbusters flick. That one was allegedly going to be told from the ghost’s POV and feature “villainous” Ghostbusters who try to capture our mild-mannered, undead hero. I donno, I kinda like that take. I figure the protagonist’s design would hem closer to the Ghostbuster’s logo, instead of any of the previously seen ghosts, which is kinda a shame. But at the same time, this is clearly a PG-rated concept. A sorta spooky family film where the Ghost is the hero and the exorcist-analog is the thing going bump in the night. If it played like Casper meets Mouse Hunt, it could be really special. I can see tons of opportunity for large scale scifi inventiveness. The kinda scope and scale and detail that Dan Akroyd lives for, but which l would be impossible in live-action, if only because of the star salaries. The Ghostbusters told from the Ghost’s POV could also offer some moving meditations on life and death and everything inbetween. Plus, they’d pretty much HAVE to show us what getting caught in a ghost containment unit looks like! I’ve been wondering that for YEARS!

Ghostbusters is one of those movies I can honestly claim to have seen over a hundred times. I never get sick of it and consider it a perfect film. While the sequel was not as good as the original, I highly enjoyed it as well and remember seeing it several times upon its release. Being 10 at the time, I was already craving a 3rd film and did my own idea of Peter and Dana honeymooning in Hawaii only for an ancient supernatural evil to surface. I had envisioned a hula ghost in the open sequence and having the island covered in snow. So when talks of a third Ghostbusters came to light I was excited and devoured any news that leaked. Then Harold's death hit and I thought part 3 was gone for good so the reboot was all we are going to get. I will say I didn't think it awful, but it wasn't in the vein of what came before. So upon hearing of Afterlife and seeing the trailers I felt we were finally getting our part 3 with the spirit of Ramis spread through out. I think Jason's film will continue the magic his father created.

I have an idea for a Ghostbusters spin-off film that would’ve worked coming out between 1997 to 2014. I titled it Ghost Buckers. Taking place in the year in 1999, with the Ghostbusters wanting to expand the ghost busting business, so they decided to start with the Midwest, setting up a HQ in Milwaukee. The original cast of ghostbusters including Louis Tully, and Janine to appear in a cameo, mainly just with the hiring the new ghostbusters team scenes that’s it. And here’s what I think would be a great Ghost Buckers team. Adam Sandler as a Ghostbuster Kevin James as a Ghostbuster Vince Vaughn as a Ghostbuster Bruce Campbell as a Ghostbuster Simon Pegg as a Receptionist Nick Frost as a Lawyer of the Ghost Buckers team. The main villain would be a Vikings football player who was a believer of the Paranormal and used magic to win football games, and during a game between the Vikings and Green Bay Packers in the 1970s he dies during the game and plans to comeback in the future to conquer the world with a army of dead Vikings football players.

I watched Ghostbusters 2016 in a theater with two other people just as it was about to fall out of theaters, and none of us remembered specific parts of it. It was a nearly 3 hour long wall of sound where no one was capable of even 2 seconds of silence. What I am saying is Ghostbusters 2016 was the exact moment where the Judd Apatow style of ad-libbed comedy failed. Sure Ghostbusters movies before the 2016 movie had ad-libbed moments, but those came in around a script and actors that were capable of finding their characters without ad-libbing for several hours first.

Another wonderful video on an otherwise sore subject: while Bill Murry's passive aggressive resistance was a major factor in the third film never getting made, I also feel the writers should have played it smart and simply write his character out of the story without the lazy death card but instead with the long forgotten movie technique of simple exposition that would have allowed Vankman, Diana, and Oscar to live happily into that off-camera sunset ("Vankman is with his family across country; he couldn't get here in time even if he tried") and save so much trouble in turn. Sadly, I don't think either the writers and especially the studio heads weren't hip to the idea (too dumb?) or were desperate to placate Murry.
