I don't believe there are any sacred cows, not even the iconic films like this, or 1994's The Crow. But you damn well better have a strong take on it to make it work. I can take off the nostalgia-glasses, but not if you completely bastardize the story (new Crow movie, lookin' at you!).

Not really. Its studio's who are risk averse. Using an IP that is known and loved in theory decreases the risk. But then you have these idiots drop way too much money on the movie further increasing the risk as the odds of making back 300 million drop dramatically.

Nice review. For me, I'm one of those Cloud 9 people. I'm going to see it again for sure. What I wanted in a Ghostbusters movie was to expand on the mythology, bring Ghosts back to New York, further develop this new characters while passing the torch to the new cast. Have some really great action and laughs along the way, with some heart at its core. For me, this movie delivered on all of that. For me, this movie was awesome!

Back to the Future works for 1985. It feels like 2025 would be odd, and going back to 1995 wouldn't work as well. Yes, there are differences, but not as many as between 1955 and 1985. My dad was 3 in 1955, and I was 3 when Back to the Future came out in 1985. So we have the 30 year difference in age that Marty and his parents had. The 90s didn't have that innocence/naiveté that the 50s had. Remaking Back to the Future just doesn't work the same. I guess they could go back to grandparents' time rather than parents' but that would be weird. I guess I don't view the 90s as all that nostalgic.
@ShaneyBright
@ShaneyBright 2 ай бұрын
@@tiffanysandmeier4753The talent in writing, directing and the like needed to make anything related to BTTF work is non existent at this point, IMHO. You could do it, because we do have some solid remakes and sequels like John Carpenter's The Thing (remake/update) and James Cameron with Aliens....yet look, I'm naming movies that are nearly, if not already 40 years old. I went to see Dune 1984 and Labyrinth with David Bowie in theaters and saw that the theater was pretty crowded- so, no thanks to any BTTF updates. The original holds up just fine.

This movie broke my heart. It’s like Sony held a gun to Jason’s head and was like MAKE A SEQUEL!! There was just nothing there. No heart. No soul. No depth. Ray was a realistic guy working on Ecto and now he’s like the crazy guy with the hair on Ancient Aliens. Phoebe and were her character went is WILD to me. The fact that she wasn’t spending her summer working on tech and the lab and was flirting with a girl ghost was WILD. Wasn’t Paul Rudd a science nerd in AL? Here he was just a comic. Still two movies in and he’s yet to wrap a ghost with his neutrana wand. And the 15 other characters were just overstuffed and pointless. Legitimately the most angry I’ve ever been seeing a movie just every 10 min my brain going “what is happening”

Well tbf trailers aren't made by the filmmakers and its well in advance of a final cut. A lot of the time it just boils down to those scenes just getting cut later down the road. It's also why sometimes the same scenes from trailers appear but with an alternate take.

In every Ghostbusters film if you are not Bill Murray or Signourney Weaver you show up in parts, and that's it. This is true for Afterlife as well with some characters being gone for more than several scenes at a time, or not nearly being as central as you might think. With Villains it's different every film, Gozer is barely in the first film (she gets way more in Afterlife), Vigo is revealed to the audience, but it isn't until midway that our heroes even have an idea it's the painting. What I'm getting at is that Ghostbusters films are often criticized for things that aren't even true for the other films. The wildest part is that people complain that every sequel isn't like the first film, but then dump on it for not being too much like it's insane.

The backbone of the original Ghostbusters story was about entrepreneurs starting up an improbable company that became successful. Anyone who has run a business recognizes all the issues: getting financing, paying expenses, getting clients, dealing with government regulation. It's much more than just the ghosts, and it really can never be recreated.
@Davidsworldtravels
@Davidsworldtravels 2 ай бұрын
Exactly! I keep saying this as well. It’s about a bunch of blue collar type guys messing around with each other and somehow becoming successful. Half the time they are trying to get laid or goof off. There’s a lot of sexual and witty jokes in there. It is NOT a family themed movie, kids just happened to love it. So constantly forcing these to be family films is making them lame. Even Afterlife looked like a lame Hallmark version of the edgy comedy the original was.
@cmysharingan
@cmysharingan 2 ай бұрын
It shouldn't be recreated, because the original already did it. Problem is, that the original is a certified classic so people always compare every sequel to the first film. As a consequence when it's too new, it's not enough like the original, and when it is like the original it's nostalgia bait; Ghostbusters films are always unfairly judged 🤷🏾‍♂️

Dan - you basically hit the nail on the head with everything you said about this film. Pretty much every point you made I was nodding in agreement with. For me, I feel that it's like an incomplete puzzle with some of the puzzle pieces strewn out on the table -- all the elements are there, but unfortunately a complete picture wasn't formed with them. It seems that the script could have done with a few more revisions and some more time on it to flesh some things out more, make further edits, etc.

Just saw it today after work and loved it. It really felt like an episode of The Real Ghostbusters. What I did like about it was it took the concept of catching ghosts somewhat seriously like the orignal film did, it didnt feel like it needed to deconstruct the Ghostbusters or wink at that camera that this is all a farce like the 2016 s*** film did. There are......some.....bits in each of the Ghostbusters sequels that are genuinely fun but, imo, all the other films _really_ do is further highlight how good the original GB film is.

Has it always been the case that there might be lines/scenes in trailers that didn't appear in the actual feature, or is it a relatively recent phenomenon?

It's like a Star Wars movies, everyone that didn't add to the story were probably just famous fans that wanted a cameo. They should have just written a story that focused on the villain and the heroes and just added two quick cameos for famous fans but no more than that. It probably would have made the flow better and would have allowed more screen time to connect to the main cast.

I’m hoping we’ll see the end of a few franchises from Hollywood- ghostbusters, kung fu panda. A lot of series that feel like they’re on their last legs

Sadly I agree ,no full cast in red jackets ,I kept thinking I'd missed a few scenes, I wanted them to venture out of the firehouse into the city and trap ghost that got out ,and have garakka assemble the army of the dead,I also wanted more banter from the OGs ,and actually showing them so tricks of the job Stanz is the only OG that emotionally connects to the next crew. I'm going again to see it with my son ,But there was too many loose ends ,what happened to slimer?

None of those jokes in the trailer made the final cut but they left in the classic Spin Doctors joke that no one in my screening got or cared about.

'Dan On The Run' reviews :-) I do wonder if there are 'plants' at these screeners who are paid to react aloud, and say certain things, in the guise of a regular film goer. I have read about this tactic. So I wonder if that person who said his childhood was reborn was one of them.

JamesLavario. Actor Zach Gallagan mentioned, " Gremlins 3" is in the works. A film script has already been put into action. They released a cartoon series that will lead to a third sequel film.

Much as I enjoy GB2 for more sentimental reasons that movie was not made "for a reason" besides the compulsion to make a sequel, which sounds a lot like what's happened here between Afterlife and Frozen Empire. GB2 essentially hit the reset button and repeated many beats from the first movie but with a different coat of paint. When you compare that movie to the first one you start to see many similarities (one example being Louis Tully being a weird guy who gets possessed, now it's Janosz Poha).

Yes it is. It's better than Afterlife as well. I'm 38, and have been a GB fan since I was 5 years old. Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2, and Frozen Empire are my top three favorites out of the 5 movies, no contest.

I would just kept the girl and paul rudd with the original team.Placing a mum in this movie is like power rangers asking their mum to join them as rangers.No teens would want their mum or dad to be in a team meant to be cool for teens or tbh wants nothing to do with their parents.

The recent Star Wars trilogy, Jurassic World films and now this. First new film relies on nostalgia and is mostly well received. The sequel tries to turn the franchise into something where they can keep releasing new movies every couple years and fails at storytelling and characters. If the third film follows the trend of those other franchises, it’s gonna be more poorly received than this one.

@@johansvensson833 Afterlife did make over $200M worldwide. (Also this was 2021 when covid was still an issue for the boxoffice) Not sure where you're getting your numbers. Also, the 2016 Ghostbusters cost $144M to make while Afterlife cost $75M to make. That's why one got a sequel and the other did not.

Whenever Paul Rudd was onscreen for that last, incredibly lame movie, all I could think of was what could've been. There was a time when Judd Apatow was going to at least write a GB 3 with the original cast plus Rudd, Seth Rogan, Chris Rock & Linda Cardellini. Man, I would've loved to have seen how that turned out.
