Corrections: - 4:39 He meant to say "Max of 2000W" instead of "Max of 1200W" - EU spec Mieles (Not UK Mieles) are actually not grounded since the plugs we use for those only have 2 pins. Notes: It's true that canisters with powerheads in Europe are no where near as common as in North America, but they still do exist in Europe I don't know about other European countries but In Germany straight suction vacuums are usually sold in average appliance stores, and if you want a higher trim power head vacuum you go to a vacuum shop, I know this is done with Mieles, Sebos and Vorwerks in Germany. Great video, very informative as always.

The UK/Ireland version actually isn’t grounded. The plug / socket system used here does not have a 2 pin version - all plugs are 3 pin, even mobile phone chargers have 3 pins. Where an appliance isn’t grounded, the 3rd pin is always present but is not connected. This is because it is required to open the interlocking shutters on the socket outlets. These were in introduced in the 1930s to prevent children from inserting objects into outlets. The continental European version would have a 2 pin ungrounded CEE 7/17 “contour” plug which is part of the “Schuko” standard. It has two round pins and circular shape that fits closely into a recessed grounded socket. The shape and the recess completely covers the pins, preventing finger contact. Power in Europe is 230V 50Hz in all of the EU, UK and neighbouring countries following CENELEC standards. 220V is an older spec, still used in some countries eg China and a few places like Korea may use 230V with 60Hz. You can get a mix of both historical US and EU influences eg half of Japan actually uses 100V 50Hz, hence you’ll see 100-120V 50/60Hz on some North American appliances too. Some appliances don’t care whether it’s 50/60Hz, so I assume they just produce a model for the global 220-230V 50/60Hz market. The frequency will tend to matter for AC induction motors running directly off mains power, or where there are electronics that are particularly sensitive to frequency. Vacuum cleaner motors are often brush commutator designs so will happily operate on any normal mains frequency or in theory even DC. Wall to wall carpets were common in this part of the world (certainly in Britain and Ireland) but have largely gone out of fashion. They were very common in the 1950s-maybe 1990s, but are generally considered to be dated and unhygienic / a source of allergies these days. Some people still use them but they’d be considered a rather dated and often a cheap finish compared to hardwood flooring. There’s a big influence of Scandinavian and Northern European minimalism in interior design, which doesn’t tend to like carpeting. There’s a strong design preference for wood but sometimes tiles too, and for the ability to wipe floors clean. You’ll also find that in very eco friendly house designs, underfloor heating is common. It’s suited to northern European climates where high temperature weather is rare, and it’s very compatible with hydronic heat pump heating systems. These use lower circulating temps for the water, and a very large surface area to transfer gentle heat, rather than hot radiators or forced air. You get really nicely warm surfaces, no allergens circulating and have no radiators or ugly heaters / ducts / registers - it’s completely invisible. Miele’s parquet brush in this market is still made from horse hair bristles to prevent scratching. The main reason you’re charged more is probably simply that Miele is a niche, high end brand in the US. It’s an upper end of market but mainstream brand in Europe so it has to be more competitive as it doesn’t have the same degree of snob value pricing.

10:13 it should be pointed that the European motor running on US 60hz ac will run ~20% faster which accounts for some of the pressure differences (it will also use about 20% more power so good thing miele's are well built otherwise it would risk not lasting that long)

Hi, I am wondering if you know how I can turn my German Miele cannister vacuum WHITE PEARL (model # S448i-2) 230V and 50-60hz into a USA version. It has the European plug........ Is there an adapter I can buy that would allow me to run this 230v in our 110v outlets here in the US? Thanks

I have just bought the Compact C3 in the UK. Now 870watt motor I believe? You cannot buy a powered brush head, we would happily buy them if available. It still cleans short pile carpet pretty thoroughly, on full power it is surprisingly powerful! Beats Dyson and Panasonic hands down, I have had those brands.... Great video by the way

Thank you for this review. It is eye opening to some about our appliances. European vacuums tend to have a lot stronger suction because of the electricity standards. That's why many immigrants in the US and Canada can't figure out why their local vacuums are weaker than the European ones. You can't really distort the physics...

Interesting to see the difference between our (uk) miele and your miele in the Usa - the newer lower wattage rules and regulations here do restrict the power our cleaners have now compared to my old revolution 700 that goes right upto 1800 watts.

Nice video. We were in the US about 10 years ago, now live near Munich. I left an Miele S5280 behind. Considering bringing it over and getting a motor for it here. Assuming the plastic coupling/fitting to the motor works (hoping that is some standard fitting) would the rest of the vacuum work? Or is there some other power restriction (circuit boards, etc.) It may have the electric telescoping tube, but as your video points out, the floors over here aren't carpeting, so won't be attaching an SB 236 carpet attachment (so no dual motor needed) Tile and wood mostly, and heated (nice in winter). Thanks.

@misspeta7937
@misspeta7937 2 жыл бұрын
We have 3 models in Australia 🇦🇺 regarding C3 basically a suction only model then cat/dog version with air driven turbo head and the electro power head, although they have discontinued the power head version... I don't know why because alot of homes still have wall to wall carpet such as my apartment and a power head model is still better. The turbo head version is fine on low to medium pile carpet depending on plushness but brush bar is prone to slowing down due to air flow restriction, yes they have a bypass to allow more airflow on the nozzle but you reduce suction power at nozzle plate which I find that you don't get deep down dirt.... bring back the power head I say or at least the rechargeable power head as an option.

CORRECTION: the UK vacuum you have, that doesn't mean it has an earth - it's just that sockets here need something to go in the earth (or ground, as you call it in America) to open the shutters over the other 2 holes for the live and neutral

Indeed, the box in a box symbol on the UK model's label means double insulated, so no earth.

That's old enough it probably should be replaced the parts are really no longer available past the filters. Yes you can run it with an adapter as shown in the video. But it will run it slightly faster and eventually ruin the machine within a year's time.

Don't forget the significant US tariffs that have been on vacuums since the 2018-19 trade war, or resale price maintenance in the US which was legalized by the conservatives on the Supreme Court about 15 years ago in a 5-4 decision (Leegin vs PSKS) that allows manufacturers to enforce a minimum retail price below which discounters aren't allowed to go.

Im pretty sure nothing would happen cos it doesn’t have the power takeoff socket, at least all of mine don’t, just a blanking pice. I’m pretty sure PR’s was just an older model that was made when we got only 2 powerhead models. The 2models CAME with the powerhead, but the lower spec, non-powerhead models still had a PTO

That is a nice transformer you have, I'm assuming that's the one you brought to the vacuum convention. You can buy those on line although I'm not sure how much power they will put out. It was able to power that central vacuum unit I brought although I think you said it got quite hot doing that, we were probably pushing it to the max but it did work. That European model definitely sounded more powerful, the motor was definitely spinning faster. In Europe vacuums cannot be higher than 900 watts now I think so those vacuums that are as powerful as central vacuums are probably a thing of the past. I'm not sure what Miele's policy is on this but many companies will not honor the warranty of a product if it's used in another country than it was designed for. In many user guides it says that using the product with a transformer or other power conversion device voids the warranty. I know some vacuum collectors like to collect machines from other places and as long as your ok with the risks, it can be interesting.

However, the power of a vacuum cleaner is really not everything Henry hoovers are 620W, significantly less than the EU maximum and they're very popular in homes and commercial settings alike because they do the job really well

@@8bitter696 well the UK only has earth on appliances that are double insulated, it's just that we still need an earth pin for our sockets, and fuses aren't needed in other countries because of how British homes are often wired

The reason for the fuse in UK plugs is the 32 amp breaker in a standard UK ring main, so our plugs need a fuse suitably rated to protect the appliance flex.
