On this episode of 'Versus' I take a look at Capcom's 1985 classic, Ghosts 'n Goblins, for both the original arcade and its 8-bit port on the Nintendo Entertainment System. A viewer on a previous video left a comment insisting that these two versions are vastly different from each other. I beg to differ. This video will settle the argument once and for all.
Check out the Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts covers that you heard in this video, done by my good buddy, Jason, AKA Rex Banter Project:

What's really happening in the opening cutscene to "Ghosts 'N Goblins" is supposed to be Princess Prin Prin tending to Sir Arthur's injured leg, which I learned about from reading the game's story.

Great video, Wes. I want to love this game, but it's just too difficult. That first theme song will forever be in my head. It'll also be the only theme I know as I can't get past it, lol. Your jokes are getting better and... dirtier to say the least. Keep them coming! The best thing about this game is that it helped spawn the Gargoyle's Quest series. Way better games than the Ghosts and Goblins series. I played Maximo on PS2. Had the same exact frustrating experience as I did with this game. What a let down, it looks cool, but I can't play for shit.

Thanks, man! Glad you're diggin' the jokes. I know my humor isn't for everybody. And yeah my jokes are getting dirtier--did you see my Splatterhouse video? I lost four subs on that one, ha ha! I disagree with you in regards to the Gargoyle's Quest series. Ghosts 'n Goblins all day, baby--well, except for maybe Demon's Crest. And Maximo is good too, but really tough. I can understand why you wouldn't like that game.

You're saying four people subbed to you, watched the Splatterhouse video, and then unsubbed? What were they expecting?! Maybe if it was some happy, family friendly channel, but it's not like your videos stray that much from the expected raunchy bits. Yes, your Splatterhouse video was killer. I'm glad you aren't caring about losing subscribers who mistakenly subscribed to you. I don't think most of my subscribers watch my videos anyway. It's a meaningless number. :P

Hello I've been playing a version at my local toy store. On lvl 3 in the beginning as I get close to the white monsters that block your path and shoot it summons a red demon and then again at the base of the blue stairs. I can't get the check point and I've gotten to where the burritos and the purple devils come out just before the next block monster. I can't find a walk-through for this level version anywhere and I really need help. Any ideas?

I bought the arcade version on Wii Virtual Console, and tried to beat it. Boy, did I try. But after 5 hours, 4 on the last stage, I had to give up. Can you tell me your experience of the last stage(stage 6)? For me(normal difficulty) there were two big men on each floor, which coupled with the projectiles they spew plus my limited capability of shooting shields, was just impossible to beat. One per floor could have worked, but not two. Just not possible.
@NefariousWes
@NefariousWes 6 жыл бұрын
OH MY GOD. THAT FREAKIN' STAGE! It's so brutal. Definitely one of my most hated stages in all of gaming. I had even more trouble on the NES version! The best advice that I can give for those Big Men is to try and keep the screen where only one will move at a time. You can actually walk away from some of them to where you won't even trigger any movement from them. Even then, it is so damn hard, and you'll most likely reach Satan in your underwear. By the time I had to do it again for the second quest, I breezed right through it from having so much practice.

Glad to see someone speaks out about NES nostalgic gamers defending the game by showing an argument with proper analysis. I too suffer the same issue when trying Ghost and Goblins on NES. The main issue is how the transition moves choppy into a grid and the fact the controls felt delayed versus the arcade I’ve grown up playing on PS2, even still playing it now on Capcom Arcade Stadium on Switch. I never gotten used to it and only made it far to level 2 since I couldn’t handle it. At least the Super Nintendo entry did it way better with fluent motion, transition, and responsive controls. So, overall, in my book, the only issues with the NES are the motion and control responses while everything else is perfect. BTW, on a side note, love that Acid Bath shirt. They’re so heavily obscured and I’ve been enjoying their bangers after discovering them from the “Mr. Incredible Becomes Uncanny Metal” vids. Here I am enjoying them with 2 of their albums in my music library.👌Anyway, impressive video, man. 👍

Agreed, the controls are really laggy on Ghosts 'n Goblins for NES. As a preteen I was never able to get past the tower with all the BigMen in it until I got a turbo controller, and even then I didn't make it much further than that. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the SNES was always my fave. The double jump and the sound track made it fantastic! Funny thing, just last year a Ghosts 'n Goblins remake was released for the Commodore 64. It's pretty good. That computer just WILL NOT DIE! Even now it still gets a dozen or so professional releases for it every year. Awesome video, man. I've never played the original arcade version of GNG. I'll have to give it a go

Thanks! You better believe I used turbo on the NES version. But yeah, I swear on the NES you press B sometimes and nothing happens. I like Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts a lot too, though Ghouls 'n Ghosts is my favorite in the series. That's funny that you mention a remake for the Commodore 64. Someone made Ghosts 'n Goblins for the ColecoVision! And I'm playing the arcade version on the Capcom Arcade Cabinet which can be downloaded on PS3/Xbox 360. It has a bunch of Capcom arcade classics with trophies/achievements, leaderboards, unlockable artwork, etc. It's really cool, and I don't think it's very expensive.

Thanks, man! Brasel TheGamer actually compared Turtles 2 with the arcade. You can check that out here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pNddZJhzmpPHXYk.html&ab_channel=BraselTheGamer You could argue that Contra on the NES is better than the arcade version. You could even say Commando on NES is better than the arcade with the addition of secret rooms and secrets. Same with Trojan, though I'd say the graphics and sound on all of those examples are much better on the arcade.

CooL! Speaking of which, there's this Ghost 'n Goblins game called Maximo: Ghosts to Glory which I've heard is a great transition from 2D to 3D for the Ghost 'n Goblins franchise. That's quite impressive, since it seems uncommon for franchises that started out in 2D to properly transition to 3D. Not sure if you've played that one though.
@NefariousWes
@NefariousWes 7 жыл бұрын
electricmastro Maximo: Army of Zin is actually a big improvement over Ghosts to Glory. While they did retain a lot of what makes the Ghosts 'n Goblins series so unique, the Maximo games never really felt like GnG to me, especially with the cartoony aesthetic. They're still decent games, though.
@electricmastro
@electricmastro 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and come to think of it, Arthur could have easily been included as opposed to Maximo, but I suppose that they wanted to start off as fresh as possible, while still being worthy of being apart of the franchise. You might as well talk about them in videos in order to further elaborate what you mean like you did with Contra on PS2, maybe as Halloween videos or something. Haha.

I think I'm gonna need a new PS2 before I make any Maximo videos, it's not playing a lot of games anymore. I'm pretty sure that the first one is available on the PS3 for download, but I'm not sure about Army of Zin.

In my childhood times playing Ghost & Goblins on the Nes,I used to throw my controller in rage because of all those unfair cheap deaths,you are absolutely right the Nes port definitely has stiff controls and response time,I think many who has played the Nes Ghost & Goblin admits it was a lackluster port,for me when I was young I played the arcade port a lot more than the Nes port which I never owned at the time I more like had it as a weekend rental at a video store.Lastly overall the arcade port is by far the best port hands down. Another wonderfully executed video. Ghosts and Goblins is another classic that I've played throughout my life and can say with the utmost confidence that, I will never have the mental strongth to complete this. However, that being said, I have only played this on the Sega (Megadrive) Genesis and Commodore 64. There are quite a few differences between what you showed and the Sega version, maybe that's what the online argument was all about at the beginning of your video. Also, I think the Commodore 64 version was called Ghouls and Ghosts and was an infinite amount of times more difficult as the controls are still that stiff way and... (here's the kicker) You only get 3 lives and it's game over. No continues. The game is already unfair as it is but... Come on. Anyway, Congraturation on this video.

Dude, you had me rolling with "strongth" casually thrown in there, ha ha! And I take congraturations very seriously. The Genesis/Mega Drive game is actually Ghouls 'n Ghosts, which is the sequel that was released on arcades back in 1988. That's my favorite in the series. And trust me, the person who left the comment was talking about Ghosts 'n Goblins on the NES. Everyone keeps giving him the benefit of the doubt, but if you've read other comments he's left on some of my other videos.... And I know that Ghosts 'n Goblins is on the Commodore 64, so I guess Ghouls 'n Ghosts is, too. No continues on any of the games in the series is just plain sadistic!

The good thing about the arcade version from video making perspective is that you dont need to have played it recently to play through it. You can just pretty much infinitely spam credits to play it right through on one go (you continue right where you died). That makes it less challenging of course for the hard core and they have to self-impose limits but it is very good for casual play, can see all levels easily. Snes version is more challenging and you might hit your head against a wall for a few tries unless you know what you´re doing. But it´s well worth it. UN Squadron is featured in quite a few top 10 lists... not only of best snes shooters but of best snes games overall. The SNES version was made in-house if I recall correctly. It is very good, in some ways better than the arcade game though of course some of the graphics were scaled down (still impressive for the platform though!) and there are some differences in some levels, theres at least one level missing completely but then there are some levels added too. Upgrading and use of money is completely different and there´s the map thing... Music is very good for both versions, one of my favorite shmup soundtracks. I´m not aware of any other console version than snes version but then there are various home computer ports like c64, amiga, atari st, spectrum and so on. All of the home computer ports that I have seen seemed to be hastly done ports by third parties and not very good at all.

Have you ever done the glitch in this game were you turn into a frog at 0 seconds and the timer no longer matters? I only ever saw someone do this one time in the arcade. It's not helpful, just removes the time for that level. I guess it could be useful if you were trying to get a high score.

Never had a chance to play the arcade version of the game, and as much as I love the NES, the laggy controls get to the point of being straight painful. That, and the cheap phantoms spawning where Arthur is are the game's only flaws. That is my opinion at least, made a video walkthrough/playthrough for the game a while back and those two things I hated the most every time I played the game, can even say they make the game unfair.

When you press the right button, Arthur will move the right forever (and jumping is the same) Edit: oh and I forgot sometimes even if your hand isn't moisty the Arthur something do the exact same thing if your hand is moisty

The GBC version is better, due to the fact that it uses the game code of the arcade (seriously, take a look at how the Red Arremer in the first level on GBA behaves compared to the NES and arcade). Also, while it doesn't make the player do the second loop at all, I still say that the Commodore Amiga port by Elite (who also did a fantastic port of Commando and SNK's "Ikari Warriors") is superior to the NES.

I never cared for Ghost n' Goblins on the NES. In my mind, it was clearly a "good' game, and it's pretty good looking for a 1986 NES game, but I never enjoyed it. There was another game it would have to compare to, Castlevania. Ghosts and Ghouls was around earlier, but both are still from the Nintendo Player's Guide Era. Both games were arcade platformers with horror themes and religious imagery set in a past/fantasy environment. Both have similar weapon pickup systems. And both have similar unforgiving jumping mechanics. But Castlevania still controlled better and was a far more polished game. I wonder if it had a better developer at the helm if it would have been more than an obligatory classic. The source material is good.

You forgot to add that the arcade version gives you an extra guy at 20000 and 70000 points. In the NES version the only way to get an extra guy is by collecting a little head icon, making points worth nothing but bragging rights during a 2P game.
