My Discovery on Cleaning Extremely Thick Grease from Kitchen Cabinets.

I used this today on a kitchen that I believe hasn’t been cleaned in 10-15 years and the owner frequently used a deep fryer on the counter. The cabinets looked even worse than your example, but this stuff worked like a charm. I’m so thankful you posted this video. I think you saved me hours of scrubbing. Thank you!

A little hint for landlords. Every time I went into one of my units after they came vacant I'd find grease had popped onto the walls and turned into concrete all around the area of the stove. I bought transparent contact paper from Family Dollar and wallpapered the area around the stove. Peel it off and replace it with some clean stuff. I found that any product that was strong enough to remove the grease would also remove the paint. Saved me hours of work and frustration

“ I typically start with the hardest things to clean so I feel better when I get to the easy ones.” That alone was worth the price of admission. I wish my 20 year old could hear that - from anyone - and that it would sink in. Have a good one!

Another helpful thing to use for cleaning nooks and crannies are the thin bamboo skewers sold for bbq kabobs. They are sturdy enough to dig gunk out of corners, great for filling damaged screw holes, lots of uses and they don't hurt surfaces. Plus, they are cheap. Thank for the great tip.

@@ghostses I haven't watched the vid yet, but am reading the comments. I'm listening to my Bible study. I tried EVERYTHING on my cabinets, getting nothing to work. I had mold in the basement, so didn't use my central heating for two years. I kept forgetting about having something cooking. I burned my food a LOT and sometimes badly. No hubby to holler at me. But, then again, if I had a husband, he would fix things for us! :) Anyways, between trying to clean them in between the smoke staining, they look a fright - smh. Soon, I will find out what you used. Thank you so much for sharing and for all the warnings. I am in a 34 year old rental, in the degreasing stage before I degloss and paint my cabinets. The insides were all rough particle board too, so I had to vacuum the insides, paint on a thick layer of wood glue, sand them and vacuum again before I start to clean. It’s been very tedious and challenging to figure out how to do this for the first time, but I’m hoping I will be satisfied with the results. I’ll be sharing a tutorial/review of the methods and products as soon as possible and I will include your video to advise people with the same issue. I was originally planning on tackling this with zep citrus degreaser as the amount of grease is less, but I wanted to double check and see if there was a better product to start with. Thanks again, this information is priceless. - Sue

I am so thankful I found this video. I have been restoring my parent's home that was built in 1972 and I sure can relate to the horrible greasy grime build up from years of neglect. My Mother is 89 now and continues to cook so know you understand. Like you, I had tried many products and the TSP took off the stain and varnish which is another issue I have to fix so if you know any companies that mix stain to match aged wood/varnish, I am interested. Meguiar's is so easy and for a bonus I found out the hardware on my cabinets were brass so cleaning them as I go. Feels like a new kitchen.

You have NO idea how much time and money you saved me!! My parents (in their 70s) moved into a home where the previous owners were disabled. There was at least 30 years of yuck on the kitchen cabinets and my mom asked me to refinish the cabinets. My siblings had scrubbed and scrubbed but couldn't get them clean. I had actually stripped a few of the panels when I found this video. My husband and I actually took the doors to a do-it-yourself carwash and made a dent in the grease then used a different brand name than you did here and cleaned them completely!! I then used mineral spirits to show my parents what all would look like with poly and they thought it was gorgeous. So aside from staining what I had stripped and some spot staining on worn areas I only needed to poly. Thank you so much!! ps: I was even able to clean the ceiling grease by spraying the product onto a cloth and then immediately wiping with a damp rag. You, sir, are a genius!

Thanks for sharing your story! I'm glad the video was helpful to you, your siblings, and especially your parents! What brand did you end up using? I know this is an older video, but boy is it still relevant!! I'm currently cleaning my cabinets in preparation to refinish. I tried TSP, I tried Dawn dish soap, I tried Dollar Tree's LA Totally Awesome spray cleanser (normally some really good stuff for everyday cleaning) and after watching this video I tried Dollar Tree's version of the tire cleaner. I still found myself scrubbing and not getting very much grease off of the cabinets. The results using this Meguiar's is night and day, AMAZING STUFF!! I was going thru 6-8 shop towels with each application to wipe away over a decade of build up, it got so much oil off the cabinets! I can't thank you enough for making this video, it's made a very labor-intensive chore actually enjoyable to do!

I needed this video so thank you for taking the time to post it and sharing your labor saving discovery. I've got 31 year old cabinets and they need the same treatment prior to refinishing. One thing I just discovered about refinishing cabinet doors and furniture is that you can use a baking soda blaster to remove the finish without having to chemically strip or sand the old finish off. Unlike blasting with sand, grit or glass beads a soda blaster does not damage the wood, it just removes the finish. Stain is another story though...

I'm in a rented apartment that was built 16 years ago and the cabinets have 16 years of crud on them. It's disgusting and no amount of elbow grease has done anything to help the situation. I do have one tip to help w/kitchen cleaning. I bought the cheapest toothbrushes with the stiffest bristles and keep one next to my dish sponge. Perfect for getting dried milk/cream out of the thread at the top of a bottle/jar, cleaning small or narrow spaces too small for a sponge or dishcloth, or even getting at the inside if a narrow bottle neck. You get the idea. Perhaps you can find more uses for my tip! Now, back to my cruddy cabinets! How tasty!

I remember trying Awesome Orange many years ago but didn't have a lot of luck. Can't remember for sure what all I tried it on but I think one thing was the outside of a frying pan that was used for frying chicken. Gross! I recall going to clean the tub one time and I had run out of the tub cleaner I usually used. I did see some white wall tire cleaner and sprayed some of that in the bath and the nasty stiff just rolled right off. My late husband was an autobody mechanic so the tub and shower were often hard to clean. I'm thinking the name of the company who made the cleaner was something like Westleys Bleche. It worked good on tires but it was good on household things as well.

The fats has oxidised into polymers. Basically, you had the same problem as you would have if you removed dried oil based paint. In oil colour, they choose oils that oxidise fast and add oxidisers, that make them dry (oxidise) faster. Given enough time, many fats present in foods, or used in frying, oxidise. Linseed, sunflower and olive oil is used in oil colours as is, rapeseed (canola) and cotton oil can be used as an ingredient after some treatment (like heating). In caveman times, animal grease was used as a binder in cave paintings, but since it can start smelling and dry to slow, it has been less popular when other alternatives are available. So, any method used to remove old oil colour work, when you have to remove old grease from a kitchen. Problem is that you may remove the underlying varnish and paints as well. Also, with traditional (oil based), varnishes and paint, the grease may be chemically bound to the surface. One possible alternative is simply to polish the surface, like you would when you oil treat wood, or use egg-oil tempera colours on wood surfaces. The grease remain, but if you are lucky, you might get rid of the stickiness (fats that is only partly oxidised, or doesn't harden when fully oxidised) and get a nice, satin shiny and durable surface. If the polishing is successful, it leaves only the fully hardened polymers and also closes the pores on the surface, and creates a surface that is easy to clean of any new filth.
