Hello Everybunny! It’s really important to know about GI Stasis: symptoms, treatment, and prevention. Being prepared can make the difference in your rabbit surviving GI stasis.
The suggestions and tips shared in this video are not meant to substitute taking your rabbit to a veterinarian.
I am not a vet and only share these tips to help you and your bunny go through GI stasis easier.

Has your rabbit stopped eating and pooping? Is your bunny hunched in the corner, grinding its teeth and won't hop over to see you? Your bunny may be in GI Stasis, a condition where the digestive system slows down or stops. This often happens quickly and can kill your rabbit if not treated promptly.
You definitely need to see your veterinarian immediately to help save your bunny. If this is not possible, you can administer oral liquids via syringe, give your bunny a gentle tummy massage and use heating pad until you can see your veterinarian.
So, to sum up, gas and GI stasis can be prevented with a diet high in fiber and low in carbohydrates and sugar. Lots of leafy, green vegetables, good quality grass hay, such as timothy, plenty of fresh water, which must be available at all, times and exercise are also important components. Be observant and monitor your rabbit for changes in appetite, activity level and fecal output. Your bunny's life just may depend on it!

My bun just went through this and I got so scared. We rushed him to a 24/7 emergency vet. Luckily they knew a little something about rabbits and did a VERY expensive x-ray $(879) that I put on my credit card lol, they also gave him pain injections and fluids because his blood tests showed he was dehydrated. That morning I after getting home at 7am, I called my exotics vet and they squeezed me in for the next day (an extra $500). Most Dog and Cat vets don't know anything about bunnies and its very sad because they're literally an animal doctor. I know people will probably think I'm crazy for spending that on a bunny, but I love him so much. I'm also looking into getting exotic pet insurance, to help with the cost in the future.

it’s extremely important to keep your bunny hydrated when I had GI Stasis, I didn’t swallow the water so my vet would give me saline injections 🐰

Yes! The first time when Miffy had GI Stasis, I used syringe to feed him some water every two hours, just to keep him hydrated. (He wouldn’t drink or eat by himself) When we arrived at the vet, I asked if I did the right thing to feed him water. She said it’s right to keep Miffy hydrated, but also his belly was really bloated, so every time when something goes in his belly, his belly will be bigger and more bloated, it will hurt him more too. But still should keep him hydrated or they’ll pass out. (That’s why they give bunnies IV fluid at the vet)

😞 This video could actually save so many bunnies! Wish I would have known mine died last week from GI STASIS but the veterinary didn't provide any of this advices a part from belly massages 😔

Thank you so much! I’m so sorry to hear this 😞 and yes, the vets are busy saving bunny’s lives too. Some nice vets will share these information, but some wants to make more money, so they won’t tell you this.

Thank you so much for this video! I love the pillow idea and heating pad! When my bunny gets stasis we use the gas relief drops you showed, as well as providing her all the things she’ll need when she wants them and massages! My other bunny died from gas almost exactly a year ago. They didn’t treat him quick enough and the vet sent him home the next morning, in the evening he died😢 if only they had done IV fluids quicker and I wish we had known about the gas relief drops, maybe he’d be here.😭 I know he’s happy in Heaven though!🌈🐰 Also, on a lighter note, why do buns get sick in the evening on a weekend when no ones open?!😟 Anyone else?💖

Yes my sweet bunny also got sick during the weekend and so first thing in the morning took her straight to the vet but I still had to drive 1 hour away to get there and by the time the vet was checking her it was too late she unfortunately passed in 15 minutes. She died in so much pain and I could not even help take her pain away. But I hope now she’s resting in peace and paradise 🌈 but I do wish vets would be more experienced with bunny’s and have emergency vets available 24/7. She died from Gi stasis which I had my suspicion from looking up her symptoms And the stores were closed so I couldn’t even give her those Gas drops , my poor baby suffered tremendously 😢

I thought I knew everything about GI stasis but learned so much from this!! LOVE watching sweet Miffy every time Have you had Miffy since he was a baby? I wish my bunnies were comfortable holding them or moving them around like that (picking up to put a pillow beneath the belly) Perhaps my rescue might never feel comfortable 😔

This saved my bunnies life. Before seeing this video, be would sit in a hunched position for hours and not eat or drink or poop. He was cold and it terrified me. But now after seeing this, he is back to his usual self! I gave him belly rubs and after I finished, he ran to his litter tray and did a bunch of poops! I'm still going to take him to the vet because he has been showing all of the GI stasis symptoms for the past few days. Just going to make sure.

For all Swiss & German bunny parents: The thing you want to use as „Baby gas drops“ is the liquid form of Flatulex (CH) or Sab Simplex (DE).

The ingredient to look out for that is in baby gas drops is Simethicone. It’s for colic. The one I found at my pharmacy is called Colimix 😊

I'm very sad that I didn't know this before. My bunny had this, we found out that something is wrong not so late. And we were trying our best to make him feel better for three weeks. We went to doctors every second day, gave him medicine. But he passed. I was crying over a month, because he was like a son to me. And i was thinking that it was all my fault and i could save him. Now i have another bunny and I always think that he has the same problem, what if i will not recognize it early. So I'm trying to check him everytime if i think something is wrong.. thank you very much for this important video.

You ll need to improve his diet. Bananas are the worst food to give as it is high in sugar. So avoid this and give him hay and more green vegies such as kale, cos lettuce, parsley , mint and lots of excercise. Make sure to brush him everyday to prevent him from ingesting hairs.

My bun occasionally gets GI stasis. I actually usually use flax seeds. Boiled until it turns into this oily thick, goopy substance. It's high in fat, so it shouldn't be given too often but works really good as an occasional remedy when stasis just starts (when the rabbit still wants to eat and is still somewhat active). Tbh. It's gross for me, but my boy eats it from the bowl without me force-feeding him (which is pretty convenient, as he really doesn't want to cooperate). Flax seeds (also called linseeds, don't know which name is more common in English) are fairly easy to get in any pharmacy (at least in my country). Though, it's not necessarily a miracle cure. If your rabbit has a really strong blockage, it may be not enough. I'm also not sure if every rabbit likes it. It works for us, but maybe not so easy for everyone. If you have a suspicion your rabbit has more advanced GI Stasis (especially if they don't want to eat anything anymore), get them to the vet as quick as possible. Not everybody has a 24-hour rabbit vet available. That is unfortunately the case for me. So it is usually something I try first while waiting for the vet. In our case, it works like 4 or 5 times, so pretty good.

It also kinda helps with hydration, as they will absorb some water from it if it was boiled.
