Just as a remark: The years dont tell too much. You are a great pianist! Many people are not aware, that real fast progress requires daily HOURS of practice (6 to 10 hours), which usually exceeds what is possible for a hobby. You for sure are a professional!

I was never fortunate enough to have piano lessons. When I was 9, I heard my first song that made me “feel” music, Fur Élise by Beethoven. From then on I was completely motivated to learn in any way I could to play that song. For a full year I just heard it every day and figured it out one note at a time. I heard it from my electric piano which had some songs it could play. After a while of playing I began to get discouraged by the lack of progress. Then I found youtube. With KZfaq I was taught the chords to the song, which is all I needed to get that spark back in me. I have practiced a lot ever scince and can now play the full song of Fur Élise along with a few other songs such as moonlight sonata first movement. As of now I am 15 and am VERRY slowly learning to play moonlight sonata third movement at normal speed(I skipped the second movement of moonlight sonata because it was boring). I plan soon to try to get a job and pay for lessons on my own soon to help me further.

I don’t remember half of the stuff I played lmao, but I’m 13 now. I started taking lessons when I was 6 and never practiced. If I did practice it was once a week for about 20 minutes. My material was stuff from random books that my teacher gave me. Timeskip 5 years and I have an okay (meaning messing up on the first bar but not much else) maple leaf rag recording on my dad’s KZfaq channel. By that time I had started practicing about 30 mins a day daily. After this recording I got really into anime and now I just learn animenz arrangements of anime pieces lol. I practice (more of goof off on the piano trying to learn the stuff) maybe about 20-60 minutes a day. I don’t practice much piano anymore because my main instrument is classical double bass. But yea I can learn some hardish pieces in about 3 weeks. My hands are still small so I don’t really try anything too crazy.

Can I share this? I started playing the piano around when I was 4 I think, 12 years later, at 16 years of age, I personally I think my state is at around your 5th and 6th level. 8 of those years, I had a teacher and used to avoid him because I slightly lost passion of playing it ... but soon after, I regretted it and wanted to go back but had less time for practice sessions with the teacher. 8 years, so from age 4 to 12 I only reached your level 3 😅, My piano lessons were not regularly because like I mentioned, I tried to avoid him. And at that time I still had difficulty of reading 😶 and I felt so left out for studying the piano, pressured & left out, at that time I didn't know anyone I know besides from me and my teacher who played the piano. For the following 4 years, I continued to learn and practice by myself and somehow I can sightread now, I guess read fast? 😊 and improved to somehow your level at the 5th or 6th I suppose. So I just wanted to share it because I don't know if I'm going to give up playing the piano because of pressure but your video inspired me to still improve so there it is.😊 so Thank you ❣

I have a very similar experience. However, I never managed to get back into playing since I quit because of the high workload I get from school and it’s been really stressful. I’m only in grade 9 but the pressure is insane. Also, everybody else plays at like level 6-8 and I get support embarrassed for not being able to be at their level. I also never took exams since I had severe anxiety and stage fright. I also rant to continue but my fundamental skills were never great and I’m kind of lost. Do you have any recommendation or tips for self learning? I don’t really have time for a teacher since then i will have to consistently practice everyday and I’m not does if I’m mentally prepared for that yet. I’m only at level 4-5…

@@offrolol3351 I kinda disagree. I think if you're serious about piano and want to go far in it, then yeah, definitely, but if you just want to learn a few pieces/songs you like and that's about it, then it's probably ok to learn a song/piece a few grades above your level. @@offrolol3351 What I mean is I think it's ok if someone just wants to learn a few songs/pieces they like and that's about it- nothing else. I don't know about you, but from my experience, there seems to be a lot of people that at one or a few points in their lives, just kinda learned a piece or two, for something to do for a while. Once they've learned them, they just kinda stop. They might go back to piano for a bit sometime in the future, but that's about it. That's when I think it's ok to play a piece a few grades above your level. I think you have a really good point, (I'm not just saying this to be nice,) and, heck, I even kinda agree with some parts of what you said, I just think there is an exception.

I first learned to play when I was a kid. Almost forgot everything growing up, till I bought a new piano 4 months ago. I could play Minuet in G within days, and despite having not so much time practicing (only 10-15mins per day), after several months, I guess my level is 4 smth. It's all because of my unconscious memory which has been set up at a very young age, apparently. The feeling of touching different keys, how to move your fingers and so on, are still there after years. That's why if you had a chance to learn the piano when you were young, and are able to keep up with it till adulthood, you are extremely lucky.

I get that there probably is a reason that you didn't get a teacher but u really should get one if you wanna get better... self taught can get u far but the progression speed will be slower. *spoken from my experience*

Because of youtube tutorials, I think reading sheet music is essential for improvement

Yeah ik what you mean. If i may, i kept trying to learn difficult stuff and since 2.5 years have been taking lessons, and i can properly play moonlight sonata 3rd mvt. So what im saying is go for something hard, keep trying it, and atleast ur technical ability will definitely improve.

Playing Hungarian rhapsody after 12 years is normal. And I see no signs of it being sped up, movement or anything

I find it funny that my first song on the piano was ode to joy aswell. I disnt get far into piano but I am playing the oboe currently. It has been about a year since i started the oboe and I feel that I have progressed a lot.

I passed the Conservatory of Music exam with a piece that I was expected to play 3 years above but I already had played it perfectly. You amaze me and I don’t ever think that I will be able to play Fantaisie Impromptu Op.66 ever in my life of music. You have a lot of talent
