Throwing my hat in with all the other 1 year of piano progress videos. I wasn't an absolute beginner. I had lessons when I was about 7 or 8, but almost all forgotten. I also have played guitar for years, so that musical experience helped. Over this one year, I believe I logged in a bit over 200 total hours, or an average of about 30 minutes a day.
** Please leave a comment if you know the title and composer for the 5th piece!! **
I started out doing lessons and learning simple pieces using Flowkey's online lessons, which wasn't perfect, but overall a service I would recommend. I can't comment on Simply Piano, Pianote, Playground Sessions, etc. So do your research to find the right one for you.
Later on I tried a couple pieces with online tutorials, and then I pushed myself to learn a couple by reading sheet music.
I only had a very simple keyboard that my child had asked for as a Christmas present and then didn't use. I also kept my practice a secret from my wife as a surprise, so I had to play quietly after she had gone to bed. That's why you can sometimes hear the keys being pressed in the video. Sorry!
I hope this video inspires you to try (re)learning the piano! If you need some other ideas for hobbies, check out some other videos on my channel where I try out other people's hobbies. I also live in Japan and get to visit some wonderful places, so check those videos out, too!

Music teacher here--This is one of the first realistic one year's progress i've seen. Kudos! I think this is great given the time devoted to practice over a year. One thing I noticed that will serve you well- sometimes beginners have a habit of playing songs at uneven paces playing the easier parts fast and the difficult parts much slower. You manage to keep a nice steady pace throughout, even if it's a bit slow at times. The right pace to play a song is the pace you can play it at where it's consistent and where you can play accurately. It's sort of like weight lifting in that it's much better for development to lift at lower weights if your form is correct. Again, great job here!

Excellent progress for a 1 year beginner. Bach's Prelude in C is a level 5 piece, you should be proud of yourself! I've read the other comments, so I was hoping to offer something the others haven't. Now that you have developed your mechanical skill at physically playing the keyboard a fair bit, perhaps you may want to look at delving into music theory more. It's not required to play, but it will help you understand musical relationships and over time it will help with learning and acquisition of new pieces because you'll start learning common patterns that are made by musicians. Apart from that, it's quite helpful for someone to just say the name of a chord that might not be as commonplace in everyday playing and you know where on the keyboard to play it (Eg Ab 6/9 or Cm7b5). Keep up the great work Kyle

Awesome man! I'd recommend to get your wrists above the keys, that will feel uncomfortable at first but it will make it way easier for you later on to move your hands laterally and also get more reach for those more difficult parts. Having your keyboard lower should do the trick. Always wrists above the keys!

@@KyleinJapan One thing to be cognizant of is that on most digital pianos there are settings which adjust the "touch" and consequently the sound. It's one thing to simply like the "feel" of an action, and another thing to gauge the sound that is resulting from the press of a key. I refer to it as the "perceived touch-response ratio" where, given the approximate keypress as would be used on an acoustic instrument, the resulting sound is very close to the sound that would be obtained from the same acoustic instrument. The thing to be aware of is that, when trying out an instrument, given any of the piano voices, the sound you're hearing, and the relationship of the sound to your keypress, is likely not the only sound available -- it may be able to altered through touch settings and volume settings. Moreover, someone else previously playing the instrument may have changed some of the settings so that you're not hearing the default, or a balanced sound from the instrument. When I'm wanting to try an instrument in the store, I go online and find the manual for the instrument, then find out how to access and change the settings so that I can: 1. be sure I know what the settings are for what I'm hearing, and 2. try out some of the different settings to see what they sound like. My chief complaints about some of the online reviews of digital instruments is that: 1. they don't indicate which settings they're using, and 2. some reviewers complain about the sound of an instrument ("too bright", "too muddy") without seeming to be aware that the sound can be changed. For example: on my Yamaha P125, I can adjust the "touch" (i.e. the perceived touch-response ratio) using the three available levels of touch sensitivity: soft (PIANO/C6), medium (PIANO/C#6) and hard (PIANO/D6), and adjusting the volume: - the soft setting changes the sound to a brighter timbre and makes the action (perceived touch-response) feel very light; it also makes it difficult to obtain a wide range of nuance. - the medium setting gives a somewhat darker timbre and makes the action feel a bit heavier -- more like a moderately light action on an acoustic instrument -- and allows for a wider range of nuance; I typically use this when practicing classical pieces (Beethoven). - the heavy setting gives a slightly darker timbre and makes the action feel a slightly heavier -- like a typical action on a Steinway grand. It also allows for a wider range of nuance, giving softer pianissimos when used with a lower volume setting. All three have their usefulness. For technical practice (scales, arpeggios, etc.) I prefer to practice with a "heavier" action since it helps to build up finger strength and makes playing an acoustic piano actually feel easier. So I set the touch to heavy and set the volume level slightly lower so that I have to play with a bit more force to get a response that approximates what I would want on an acoustic piano. If I set the volume too high, then I have to hold back and play much more lightly to generate an authentic response. Also, the lower volume setting tends to allow for a greater dynamic range, whereas with the higher volume setting everything sounds too loud. An additional bonus of the P-125 for me is that, as an organist, I can also practice organ pieces as well - at least the manual part. This is additionally beneficial because the P-125 weighted action is better to practice on than the unweighted organ keys and makes playing the organ more precise. The P-125 also has a most delightful harpsichord -- makes playing Bach Inventions a lot of fun. Finally, I also enjoy jazz (I love the bass and ride cymbal, and the rhythm accompaniments are also very well done), and some synthesizer effects as well. I hope that may be helpful -- wishing you all the best in choosing your new instrument!

Love the ffx to zanarkand. As a self taught pianist you are doing great. But advice i can give is if and when able to get a 88 key weighted keyboard and a sustain pedal. It will make a world of difference. You should check out a pianist names Kyle Landry, Frank Tedesco and Marcus Veltri. All great pianists. Keep up the great work.

Wow, you made a lot of progress in just a year! Very good, even playing and a great sense of rhythm. Surely you have some prior experience with music or you use your fingers a lot for typing or similar? I also love the message you’re sharing, especially for people who are very busy and don’t have much free time. Practicing only 30 min a day, but consistently, can clearly do wonders. And lastly, I would advise to invest in a better keyboard (with weighted keys and pedals) if you intend to continue learning, you have outgrown this one already. And please fix your setup for healthier posture!

Others have noted the same things. I'm currently looking for a better keyboard. I took piano lessons for about a year(?) when I was 7 or 8, but forgot pretty much all of it. I've played guitar for about 20 years, so that's where the musical sense comes from.

That’s great progress, especially on that keyboard, but I would invest in a full-size 88 key weighted digital piano. You could find one for around $500 new or maybe even less used. It will make a huge difference in your technique and fluency.

I will definitely try to challenge myself this year. I already tried to learn songs but eventually didn't stick to it. Maybe I was setting the bar too high. I was trying to learn some Hollow Knight tracks (Dirtmouth & City of Tears) as well as Danse Macabre from Saint Saens.

If you're a beginner, then try some simple classical pieces written for beginners or training purposes. There are also some simplified/beginner versions of songs you may like, and those will probably be more motivating. You'll also hit a wall now and then (I did) when it feels like you're not making progress. Keep pushing yourself and before too long, you'll be able to play some things you're proud of. You can do it!

Nice work! You're at the point now where you could benefit from some in-person instruction from a music teacher. That's when your progress really hits the pace. Try some Mendelssohn. His piano works give maximum "bang for the buck" for beginner/intermediate players in my opinion.

Did you have any experience with other instruments before you took up piano. I’ve been a private music teacher for 30+ years and I’m impressed. I always tell my students that if they practice 30 minutes a day they will get better FAST. YOU PROVED IT!

2:29 maybe Hirokazu Tanaka made the arrangement, but the original melody as we know it today was written by the Russian composer Yakov Prigozhiy at the end of the XIX century.

True. The website I learned it from accredited it to Mr. Tanaka, which is what I followed. I'm not sure if Mr. Tanaka added anything to the original composition or not.

I started with Flowkey. I've stopped using it mainly because I want to read sheet music more, and they only show about 4 measures at a time on the screen. I don't like how you need to scroll the progress bar forwards and backwards. They have some good lessons for beginners and a large library of songs with various ability levels to get you started. Overall, it's good for beginners, but see if they have a 1-week trial you can use before signing up.

It's hard for me to get a perfect full piece recording. I'm realising most channels showing piano progress only show 20-30 sec slices. I suspect that it's much easier to only show the parts you find easiest! For example, I never managed to make a satisfying recording of To Zanarkand (piano collection arrangement) because it's long and there are a few parts I find much harder. In the end, I very rarely record myself because I don't reach my standards of perfection ... I started 1.5 years qgo, full self taught adult, and my progression was somewhat similar to yours. Also, like other comments said, fix your keyboard height! I spent 5 months before buying a proper stand + seat and the difference was gigantic. I also recommand improvisation. I started 3 months ago and I made insane progress. I'm far more dexterous and consistent. When we only learn complex pieces, we only practice a handful of variations. With improv, you do all possible combinations of hand positions. You develop the intuition of what is ergonomic and confortable, how to navigate the keyboard. I started improvisation by learning a Morrowind Musescore arrangement where the second part has 50% of notes being embellishments of the first section. I tried to play randomly other notes as embellishment and eventually I went full randomness, creating the melodies too. These last 3 months, I spent 70% of my play time on improvisation and my progress is faster than when I only practiced complex scores.

At the start, the app/site I used only had short parts of those songs for beginner-type pieces. More of the songs later on I was able to play longer/full versions, but my initial videof ro my one -year progress was close to 20 minutes. I don't think many people on KZfaq have the time/willingness to watch all that. KZfaq's algorithm supposedly penalizes videos that people tend to quite watching midway through, so I tried to make my video the right balance, and that's why I put the final three songs in full on a separate video for those that want to watch it. To be honest, "The Entertainer" and "To Zanarkand" each took me about 25 or 30 takes to get a perfect playthrough. Very cool to hear about your progress through improvisation. I'll try to play around with that more and see if I can get similar results!

@@KyleinJapan You did a good job of finding a balance in this video. I tried Skoove for a couple of weeks at the beginning of my piano journey six years ago at age 66. I'm pretty impressed by what you were able to do by continuing with it. @Bvic3 The method I've followed for four years is 100% improvisation, with a specialised coach. @Bvic3 is right, playing increasingly complex pieces doesn't make you fluent in the language of piano music.
