The fact that this footage exists is absolutely incredible! It's 1967, in color, on video not film, and not only that the sound quality is incredible as well! Pretty damn fascinating to hear the crowd applaud at everything, and to hear every little nuance of whats happening in the ring is simply amazing…. Thank you so much for the upload!

I've noticed here on youtube that most of the vintage matches from the 50s and 60s are either footage of Japanese wrestling, or American wrestling subtitled and voiced over by Japanese commentators. I think it says something about how much respect the _puroresu_ world has for wrestling as a whole, where they do an even better job at preserving vintage American wrestling than actual American wrestling promotions (except WWE with their massive video archive) do.

@@jadoc3767 Don't know if you're from Hawaii, but we had quite the pro-wrestling scene back in the day on Friday nights. And, yes, international talent like Baba and Andre the Giant would regular square off, and locals like Don Muraco, Mr. Fuji, Professor Tanaka, and Ricky Steamboat were well established in the islands before I started seeing them on mainland TV. Unfortunately, as a Big Island boy I never got to see the matches live in Honolulu, but still, those were good times.

You have to admire Giant Baba.. Despite those skinny as bone arms, the man has enormous strength and he is incredibly agile for a giant. Never seen any other giant do the kind of moves that he does. Finally, he has the stamina to last a full hour in an intense physical match. Looks are indeed deceptive. Giant Baba will always remain a legend.

From Japan, This is Baba's words on this match. "I watched Bruno's match many times and I never seen he wrestled more than 20 minutes in New York. So I thought I should bring it to more than 20 minutes match, and Bruno will get out of breath but after 20 minutes he was still full of speed and strength, 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 50 minutes and to the end, never changed. Whole through the match, I was surprised and even impressed with him " This is a real athlete and professional wrestler "

baba always took care of those people who worked for them even those who betrayed him. he understood them and thought that was just business evolving. some even came back to his fold and he still accepted them and pushed them according to their status. he's the reverse of antonio inoki and misawa don't get me wrong i still respect those two but in terms of personal respect and being a true gentleman giant baba had them beat by leagues only samartino is the closest guy who i can think of in terms of doing business but still staying classy and keeping their word. you could add terry funk and hansen to the list. those guys are men of their word and always keep their promises even if they need to sacrifice a big pay check.

well they should..only because the stuff they have been putting out in these few years & even in this day & age are over played. what i mean is that the wwe has always been repeating their video/dvd/films constantly without putting new archives that are hidden away in the deeps of their treasures. so i feel that we as consumers are being robbed continuously!
@arionapollo1387
@arionapollo1387 10 жыл бұрын
I don't believe that they have too many archives from the 60s. Even the tv shows that have been saved from D.C. (capital wrest. corp.) was due to the fact that Bill Watts asked Vince Sr for copies because he was on those shows. and there is a big blank up to 1972. Even up to 1976 there aren't too many tv shows saved (from what I know) even the msg shows weren't saved until 1973. Before that there is only filmed footage here and there. There has been quite a lot of 70s shows put on demand this last decade. We should be happy because prior to that many of these haven't seen the light of day for decades!

+Arion ApolloSometimes, WWE Home video will include a match of a WWE Superstar from a Japanese promotion. Especially if it took place early in the star's career. When they do, they will have an alternate commentary track available, which usually features either the WWE Superstar talking about the match with a WWE announcer, or they will have Jim Ross or Michael Cole talk about the match as it takes place.

+Purplerambler69 Bruno Sammartino was in the middle of his first WWWF (now WWE) Title reign. I guess that, in Japan, when a wrestling opponent shakes the other's hand, it is showing a great deal of respect to him. Perhaps, in the eyes of some Japanese pro wrestling fans, they believed that Sammartino was a heartless, relentless monster, especially if all they knew of him, was the legendary photos of him putting "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers into an "over-the shoulder" backbreaker, and ending his career. in 1963 (in an interview many years later, Rogers stated that the match was done that way, because he was forced to retire from professional wrestling after suffering a heart attack). JWA was still an NWA territory in 1967, when this match took place. When the NWA Championship came in dispute in late-1962, some of the NWA affiliate promotions broke away when their favorite wrestler was not recognized as the NWA World Heavyweight Champion (Capitol Wrestling, lead by Vince McMahon, Sr., was the largest NWA affiliate to break away, and formed the WWWF in 1963). JWA fans most likely supported the continuation of "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers as NWA World Heavyweight Champion, and hated Bruno Sammartino for ending Rogers' professional wrestling career. When Sammartino shook "Giant" Baba's hand, the JWA fans were genuinely shocked, that he would actually do this, in respect for one of their favorite pro wrestling superstars. Bruno Sammartino most likely did this, in order to try to win over the Japanese pro wrestling fans, in order to help promote the WWWF, in order to convert them into WWWF fans.

My Father's favorite match. Back when a giant dropping his knee across your throat would win a pinfall (like in real life). And I LOVED that awesome backdrop by Baba right before the 1st Fall.

man you could not get footage this old that looks this good from American wrestling. guess the Japanese had better cameras

Yeah, in Japan they had switched to using film cameras like they use in movies for wrestling events at this point. It makes their old footage much better looking than ours.

zedhead In the 60s I'm not sure. Most American promotions filmed with video in the 70s and 80s though.

lee brabham They used better cameras because they took wrestling more seriously and they've taken care of the films better while in America they're just tossed in someone's basement to rot.

lee brabham This is 1967 and looks as good as the film that the WWFE used in the early 80's, judging by their Coliseum Video matches from 1980-1985. Japanese wrestling was way ahead of it's time in the production department. Of the few scant WWWF matches from the 60's I have seen, they look like they were shot with old 8MM cameras. This footage is like another planet when compared to some of that US stuff that looks like choppy home movies from the 60's.

Just looking at this match is really good! And as a Wrestling fan who loves to see the communication taking place, you can tell at some parts of the match (looking back at it now) you can easily tell there are times where they'll say like "Backdrop" or "Chop" (This isn't me trying to take away from the match, I just love moments like that) Classic match!
