The Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1939 had an important impact not just in the Campo de Gibraltar, but also in Gibraltar itself as a society. This Documentary has been co/produced by GBC and Unite the Union Gibraltar In order to recall those far reaching historic events.

"Genius consists of knowing when to stop." If this is true, then Franco was a true genius. He got vital help from Germany and Italy, but did not tie his fate to those two benefactors. He transitioned from Fascist to head of a country integrated into Europe in the 1950-60 period, lots of money from tourists to Spain and also lots from Spaniards as guest workers in northern Europe, and then died in his sleep. Really, quite a neat trick.

Its possible that Germany had lost II WW just because of Franco's refusal to take Gibraltar. If Regia Marina had been deployed in french and spanish ports, im not going to say that Sealion would had been possible but maybe Atlantic battle would had other outcome.

Tourism was vital to the recovery of Spain's economy, as the nation was ravaged by the war, like Vietnam they relatively quickly opened up to tourism. to gain the revenue they needed to rebuild their nation.

General Franco visited Gibraltar on March 8, 1935, where he had an interesting meeting at _The Rock Hotel,_ Gibraltar's premier hotel.

Crazy how the whole of Spain will soon be dying of thirst due to the greed of the tourism $$$ and retired Europeans all that income has sucked the life ( which is water ) from the land. Spain unfortunately faces a bleak future as there is an environmental catastrophe happening with water or the lack of it especially in the countryside.

The British establishment wasn't afraid of a democratic Spain but of the prevail of sovietism in Spain and a probable uprising in Gibraltar by the anarchists and communists. After all the relations of U.K. with Franco after the end of Second World War weren't bad at all.

That's why Churchill did nothing to help Spain and that's why after the CIvil War and WW2 while Truman wanted to destabilize Franco's regime Churchill opposed it and let the dictator die peacefully when he was old.

The UK goverment was afraid of the II World War, because they knew they will lose against Germany (in fact, without the USA and the USSR it would have been imposible to defeat them). ... Germany and Italy were helping the spanish fascists. In fact without Italy and Germany, the spanish african military forces wouldn't have arrived to Andalucia, and without their help they wouldn't had the help of their air forces (remeber Guernica)... Nazis and fascist were "tryning" their new weapons in Spain. Once the war end it began the II World War and London was bombed...

Good documentary, but one side of the coin only. Franco had a support from Nazi Germany and Italy, but republicans had support from the Soviet Union which was under Stalin then, in the time of Great Purge when around million people were killed only in the Soviet Union itself. Second - fascist in Spain were killing civilians, but so did republicans in so called Terror Rojo, 38 000 - 110 000 victims, according to different sources. And speaking about Gibraltar - Franco did not join Axis Powers and was the one who refused Hitler to attack Gibraltar during the II World War. That is a important consequence of the civil war in a matter of Gibraltar, which historicians should consider.

Perhaps having the most powerful Navy in the world in a garrison in the south of your poor country is not so bad. Spain could never have protected the "gateway to the Mediterranean" like Britain did and it probably kept Spain safe in a way it never could on its own.

Bad things happen during war. I've read some of the comments. Both side of Civil War were vicious. But ask yourself one question. What would have happen if the Nationalist had lost the war? The Nazi took over Poland in less than a day. What would have happen to Spain and Gibratar if Franco had lost the war? Remember ... the Nazi took France in less that 6 weeks. Certainly the Nazi flag would have flown over Spain and Gibraltar.

Had the loyalist won the SCW, the Axis would of occupied Spain, seized Gibraltar, cutting off British forces in the Middle East, causing the loss of Egypt and the Suez Canal... it would have likely resulted in an Axis victory. Franco’s refusal to allow german passage through Spain to seize Gibraltar was of huge significance. There were no “good guys “ in the SCW; the populists has been usurped by Communists by 1937 and there would have been purges beyond the level of Franco’s had the other side won. Franco was the best of two bad options.

The civil war was horrible for Spain but actually, Gibraltar is currently worse. It is the cancer of the south of Spain because our businesses cannot deal with a duty-free. The economy of Gibraltar is black money, cheap petrol, cheap alcohol and cheap tobacco. This economy has killed our economy in the Campo of Gibraltar. A lot of people are forced to get involved with drugs and tobacco dealing because no business can be competitive with a duty-free in front of your house! Gibraltar is a thick tick for us. This centenary problem can get resolve with a bilateral soberanity and fair taxation with the rest of our country.
