Gibson haven't had a great couple of years. The 2015 Les Paul Studio I tried was absolutely abysmal, but it looks like in 2017 they might finally be back? Let's find out with one of the lower-range Les Pauls with the 2017 Tribute T in a stunning satin gold top finish. My girlfriend loves this guitar because she thinks it smells like chocolate.

Man alive! This is the best resolution video I've ever seen on you tube! Nicely done on the olfactory part of the review too - hilarious!

Trust me I'm not trying to be negative here. I give you credit for doing this... Maybe I just haven't watched enough of your videos but the ones I have fall into a rut. Your verbal descriptions etc. and visual shots of the guitars are very very good especially telling us what you like and don't like and why, but I wish you'd demo some different tones or some actual leads. Everything is so over distorted without individual notes, I'd like to hear some of the clean tones or the versatility of sounds the guitars are capable of. For me that would make a better review. Give us the whole picture. Cheers! and good luck.

Your video inspired me to check one of these guitars out. I purchased one used for $725 just like the one in your video and love it to pieces. I can't imagine getting rid of it as it plays and sounds wonderfully. I would encourage anyone who's interested in a Les Paul to check out this model. The smooth satin finish is a plus in my opinion. Rock on!

I got a 2017 Gibson Explorer and straight out of the box it had a problem with the input jack and in addition it had a grounding issue as well. I boxed it back up, sent it back, and ordered an ESP E-ii Eclipse. Just waiting for the ESP to get here.... can't wait👍

Got this guitar 10 days ago and im still blown away. I don't know if this is related to the horrific price and quality difference between my old epiphone special-II and this guitar, but i am loving it. I was kinda worried about what you said with the pickups, but for my style of playing it is okay. I play in a cover band who plays some dancing tunes like hollywood hills or some ac/dc and for this kinda stuff its very good. But for the stuff i play privately (mostly metallica) i have thought about changing the pickups. Do you have any advice for good passive metal pickups? Or can i put active pickups in there too? By the way, your videos are great, i,ve subbed!

I got the 2017 Tribute T Satin Gold Top as in the demo. I absolutely love this guitar! The only things I changed was to put strap locks on and locking tuners. I also purchased a Gator hard shell case. I was either lucky or they have indeed improved quality. I love the '60's slim taper neck. The other guitarist in my current band has the 2016 Tribute T Gold Top and those have the 50's neck and hotter pickups. The two guitars blend and clash in excellent style.

Yeah, the jury is still out as to whether quality has gotten better or we just got lucky. Either way, I'm glad you got one of the good ones. When they're done right, these Tribute Ts are some seriously kickass instruments \m/

I have had a 98 LP Standard and this guitar blew it out of the water. The weight relief is welcomed and this thing sustains for days. I bought mine at Sam Ash due to your video and I am local to the Atlanta area(small world, huh?). An additional note from SA, if you buy things from them(think strings, picks, etc.)they will include a 10% off coupon. I bought mine for $809USD shipped. If you want to buy it, I suggest firing up a Chat-window on Sam Ash and tell them you have the coupon. I am in the process repatriating my guitar collection due to the current wind of optimism here for US products. This makes my third US made guitar(down form 10 foreign made guitars) and I am glad that I got it. @Agufish, Your video and musicianship are great. It is refreshing to see such a likeable, knowledgeable person that makes cool music. Keep it up!!!

Cool man! Small world indeed. Next time you're at Sam Ash, or talk to them, could you do me a favor and mention that my videos helped, and that you bought from them? We've been doing this on a trial basis, and they want to know the videos are beneficial to both them and potential customers. And for my own curiosity what's the other US guitar you have besides the Tribute and the '98 Standard?

I had the opportunity to play this exact guitar at my Guitar Center today and let me tell you, this thing plays like an absolute dream, almost like it was made just for me, I didn’t really take the time to play Metal on it but I ripped some Eagles and Fleetwood Mac on it and this guitar just screamed, especially since I was playing it through a Marshall, definitely got my money on this next guitar.

Some of the best days for Gibson are in the past. There's nothing wrong with a 'tribute' to that heritage. The fundamental problem with Gibson, is they are trying to figure out how to appeal to two markets. In one hand, you have the new school guys, who are always into the latest and greatest. Then, there's the traditionalist, like my dad, who hates a weight relieved les Paul. They're the les Paul fundamentalist. Change anything and they riot. Being in a tug of war with your market is never a good thing, and no one at Gibson will just take the wheel. Look at Prs. They're on the cutting edge, because they move forward, and don't look back. Take it how you will I guess.

Question, if you could get a high end epiphone or the gibson 2017 les paul tribute, which one would you get? I'm looking for a good les paul in this price range and keep going back and forth
@agufish
@agufish 7 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'd have to flip a coin. Stylistically, the high-end Epiphones are more to my liking and with a professional set up and new pots/switch, they'd feel just as high-quality as the low-end Gibson I tried. But I don't know which Epiphone signature models will retain their value, whereas the GIbson name pretty much ensures resalability. So I guess it depends how much money you care about getting back later down the line.

I have had issues with My Tribute T buzzing around the E and A strings despite the action being relatively high. It came like this straight from the factory. I am not sure what to adjust exactly. I picked this up for $800 with OHSC as my first Goldtop LP. I upgraded later to LP Standard for $2400... well.. I still own the 2017 Tribute T because, well, the more expensive wasn't "better". Just different. The 2017 T played and felt so much better to me. Think it was a special year for wood or something.

Great video! I just purchased a 2017 Gibson Les Paul Tribute T Satin Gold Top from zzounds for $809 free shipping, and somehow I got a FREE gold Gibson hard case (SKU: ASGCCASE-LP) worth $220! Now onto the guitar. I own an 2013 Epiphone Les Paul 1960's Tribute Plus Outfit with the Gibson 57Classic/Classic + pickup combo. It's a well-made and good sounding guitar, but I'm not a fan of the neck. It's a "D" shape that's too thin and flat. I much prefer the Gibson's neck; sure it's a Slim Taper, but it's much more a "C" shape and to me much easier and more comfortable to play. The Gibson fit and finish is superb. No buzzing, great intonation, no finish flaws, beautiful rosewood...no complaints! Lastly, to clear up some of the misinformation regarding the Tribute's weight relief, these guitars have Gibson's 9 Hole weight relief...NOT the Modern Weight Relief NOR any Chambering. These simply have those 9 holes...same weight relief as the 2016 Traditionals. In my opinion, the reason these feel a bit lighter is because Tributes (and Studios, I think) use thinner Maple Caps, making the overall guitar thickness about 2mm thinner. I'd love some real measurements, but I haven't been able to find any online. Anyway great channel, great playing, and thanks!

hey dude. the main function is that it stops the strings from ringing when I stop playing, eliminating unwanted noise. pretty much the same as a Jimmy Clip, but using a hairtie is much cheaper. This is all psychological and a case of confirmation bias. You can find videos of people literally sawing away 60-70% of the body on a guitar and the difference in sustain and tone are minuscule, barely even noticeable.

Very good quality guitar for the money and it offers more potential than 99% of the people who will ever play it. If you don't have the hands you won't be able to tell the difference between a yardstick with rubber bands & $10,000 Custom guitar anyway.

No problem dude, I got your meaning. Depends how heavy you want to go. This one has a thinner neck, so I find it faster to play, but the 490T as a bridge pickup isn't that good for metal. The 498T in the 2016 LP is a hotter pickup and can do the heavier stuff better.

Agufish Thanks for the advice man, and you are very right. Normally I try to live by that, always try before I buy. But music shops around here, (Northern NH) don't usually carry anything like this, or ESPs, etc. Usually 100 Fenders, Squires, or cheap sub $200 Epiphones. But I appreciate the heads up! I'll think on it. It's really this or the Bill Kelliher I'm interested in. But I play more like Black Label Society riffs plus soloing, and I'm not sure if the Lace pickups are really for that, or mostly just for riffing, not soloing. They sound like really "thick" tone. I haven't heard anyone solo with them.
@Mister47Gaming

That came off convoluted, I apologize lol. I am just concerned that the Lace pups won't be good for soloing, or getting those high squeals and harmonics.
@agufish
@agufish 7 жыл бұрын
Lol no problem man, happens to all of us. As far as pickups go, the 490s are built more for rock, whereas those Lace pickups are just about the highest output pickups I've tried. They'll handle pinch harmonics easily. And the Kelliher has the neck cutaway, so it's better for soloing. In fact, IMO, it's an all around better guitar.

You mentioned it lacks the bite. I have a Gibson 2016 Les Paul Tribute T, and it has a decent bite. BUT, the 2016 has a 498T and the 2017 has the 490T, that's why the attack/bite is not that great on the 2017 model

***** Oh, sorry! I meant the printed circuit board in the control cavity. Older Gibsons had the tone pots soldered in but newer ones have a printed circuit board that everything clips onto. If you want to change pickups, it means the pcb has to come out and new pots/pickups have to be put in the old fashioned way.

Not really sure. I think they look better with the bridge/tailpiece lower, but since it's not my guitar, just a loaner for the demo, I just kept it like that. The action and intonation were fine, didn't want to mess with it.

Yes. I played a couple of Traditionals and I wasn't all that impressed with them. There was lacquer bleed on the body and neck binding, particularly at the body joint area. The quality of the flame was really inconsistent and not bookmatched on some of them, the fretwork could've been better overall and the rosewood on all the fretboards looked kinda cheap and light coloured. They also didn't feel all that smooth like some rosewood is when you sand it with really fine grit polishing paper. In my opinion the quality modern LP's don't exist with Gibson. They exist with Japanese-made brands like FGN, Tokai, Burny, Edwards, Greco, Bacchus etc. You don't have to worry about model years on those guitars like you do with Gibson. They're awesome quality guitars no matter what year they're made. Isn't pointing out that this guitar has a solid mahogany body also a misnomer? I thought the Tributes had a modern weight relief and are therefore not actually solid. The sweet vanilla smell of the guitar you're getting is in fact the smell of the nitro lacquer off-gassing and giving off nitric fumes. They smell good, but they're actually not all that good for you to breathe. My Gibson V '68 reissue smells the same.
@agufish
@agufish 7 жыл бұрын
dammit, this is the only 2017 I've played so far so I was hoping it was consistent across every guitar from every line. I guess not, that is really disappointing to hear :( and crap, I've been breathing this in like a mofo. For sure I have more trust in the Japanese-made stuff right now. and yes, you're right they do have weight relief, I think what they mean by solid is that it's a one piece body.
@T00DEEPBLUE

In all fairness one's got some lofty expectations if they're hoping that Gibsons are going to suddenly be consistently built overnight. That's not to say that Gibsons are bad guitars by any means. I love Gibsons as much as the next guy. But they almost always have been inconsistently made and it's always been essential to try them before you buy them. There do exist some great Gibsons out there. It's really uncommon for the relatively inexpensive Gibsons to have 1 piece bodies because it's just too expensive and difficult to source so many bodies with only 1 piece of wood. Typically they come with 2 or 3 piece. I think from the shot of the back I can see a slight difference in colour near the center of the body where the neck joint is and there's kind of a hard line that splits the change in colour which suggests a seam, but it doesn't seem to run perfectly straight down the body so who knows? Might be 1 piece, might be a really nicely matched 2 piece. Either way it's not important, the difference between 1 piece and 2 piece is purely aesthetic. That's a particularly nice-looking back on that example. I love the random darker portions of the mahogany.

Only the bottom of the line SG faded but it was a fine guitar. Dead simple but everything an SG should be. I'm sure I'm in the minority but I like satin finishes so I may be a bit biased but I have played lots of Gibson SG's (and own 2) and the faded SG special was just a good SG with no bells and whistles.

2016 Gibson models were amazing. The new 2017 les Paul standard has an amazingly comfortable and fast neck that's asymmetrical. It's Gibson, if that's not your feel you won't like it, and of course it'll be over priced. At my local samash we got a great batch.

John killian its adjustable, just like it is on your Gibson's. Most players screw the tail piece right down to the body, as it seems like the right thing to do... However if your raise the tail piece a bit, you've effectively created les of a break angle over the sattles... This makes the string tension a little less, so some players will enjoy the more relaxed string feel.
