Got mine brand new in July, somehow paid $530 new, Zzounds had it for $699, I talked em down to $630 Then a week later another company had it new for $599 So they refunded me the $100 difference between sale prices Not realizing they only charged me $630 to start, So bottom line was $530 for a brand new gibson les Paul! Sold my epiphone les Paul for $280 Net cost for new American made les Paul $250!!! Sorry.......thought that was a sweet deal!

They are $1,299 as of October 2012. I know because I just got mine and that's the price everywhere. Mine is weight relieved at 7 lbs. 10 oz. I am going to chamfer the top edge as that's something that I always do to round it off for long hours of playing comfort.

I have the 2017 model and love it. The price was super sweet. The newer price does seem like a stretch, particularly now that they are now doing less work by not doing any weight relief to the bodies. All the same, it's a great guitar that's priced right for an entry level, no BS, American made Gibson!

I tried the 2016 and 2017 Tribute yet, none of my local stores have any of the 2018s yet. I found the 2017 tribute to have a thinner neck than the 2016 tribute. I wonder how the 2018 will feel in comparison?

Great review as always Hunter. Loved the riff, even if it's recycled. Gibson QC appears to be a joke, but volume controls really are tone controls, but not the other way around ;-) Ha ha! Simon was harsh calling it a "toy guitar", but some of those matte finishes leave a lot to be desired at that price point. Rock on bro!

Great review man. Just the info I wanted to hear. I just stopped in GC and spotted one of these. I thought the price was a misprint. I rarely plug in guitars to demo but the body looked and felt great. I wanted to see how the neck played and the pickups sounded. I was very pleasantly surprised. I love that it’s stripped down to just the essentials and that there’s No binding. For $999 it’s almost a no brainer to pick up this geetar. I’m in the process of packing up one of my Epiphones to sell and offset the cost. 🤘🏼

It's awesome that you finally re uploaded this video. I enjoyed it the first time. The knob crap makes me laugh. Let's be honest. It happens. In a mass produced world, mistakes are made, and you managed not to notice either. That being said, if this was actually your guitar, one phone call to Gibson, would most likely rectify the situation. I think, for the price, this guitar is a lot of win.

I've got one, I got the huge black Friday discount, and paid about $700. You can say all you want, but it's a mahogany body, set mahogany neck, maple cap, and rosewood fretboard, made by Gibson. For those who dont understand where I'm going with this, this is what they call a Les Paul. The tone woods are there, it has a classic nitrocellulose satin finish which is better than having a thick coat of tone defeating polyurethane over paint. You know, like a pretty girl with way too much makeup. My pet peeve was that they couldn't stick on the $2.00 poker chip over the pickup selector, which would have looked better, and they could have slipped a Dirty Fingers pickup in the bridge for me, but otherwise it is well balanced. I'll be putting in a pair of gold Fishmen Fluence Modern pickups, locking Grover Vintage locking tuners in gold , a gold Faber ABR1 bridge with brass saddles, and a gold plated aluminium stop tail piece. That will get the guitar sounding like a 1959 Les Paul, and give it a touch of class. Just in case you didn't know, Gibson hasn't used the original materials in their reissue guitars "ever", the parts I have mentioned are the closest to true 50s parts available on the market. Stainless steel may sound like a quality material to build bridges and tail piece's out of, but it isn't what Gibson used back in the day, far from it. So if you want the tone of a 1959 Les Paul, with hot pickups, you need to research the materials they used, luckily that's easy to find on the internet. You may want to listen to this video to understand how vastly different modern Les Paul's sound compared to the 1950s, I bet you'll choke : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mp5-irSEz661eKc.html , wear headphones or use good speakers, this will really upset you that Gibson wants $10,000 for a 1959 Les Paul reissue, but it doesn't even sound close, and all they do is swap a 1950s bridge and a 2000s bridge in and out of the same guitar.

I’m eyeing up the 2021 version of this right now because of the modern weight relief. My shoulder can’t handle really heavy guitars anymore. But I’m also considering the 2021 Studio model. But I think I like the look of the tribute better. More old school.

Help! With the new Gibson 2019 range on the horizon, prices are coming down again. Am torn between Les Paul Studio, Tribute or the Chapman ML-2 Pro. I want something that plays great rock but forgiving and easy to play - which of the 3 would you choose?

I just bought one of these for $999.00. CG has them on sale through November. Got one that was made out of one solid piece of mahogany. Compared it to the best of the Epiphones and while they are much prettier (the Gibson without neck binding looks really cheap) quite frankly, they don't sound as good. For a grand, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a much better deal in the way of a brand new guitar that sounds like a proper Les Paul.

Not having binding doesn’t make the guitar play worse,in fact it keeps down labor costs so as to make the guitar more affordable.As long as the maple and mahogany are fine it’s then up to the pick ups and hardware

I bought 6 Gibsons this year, out of 6 Gibsons 6 of them had major issues with QC, I sent 5 back and kept the 2017 Tribute les paul gold top. I have had to replace the crappy Kluson tuners with Grovers to keep it in tune, replace the strings (crap), and do a full set up including intonation (I guess Gibson couldn't be bothered. Things I couldn't fix, was the over rounding of the fret ends that cause the low E to slip off the fretboard from time to time, and the crappy lack of any type of proper leveling to the fretboard end that meets the neck. Things I did to make it look better....I got some light compound wax and polished the headstock front and the top, to make it look like an aged gloss, huge improvement over the satin in my option, but then again I have seen what happens to a satin finish after a little time playing...glossy in spots. Things I plan on doing to make it better, get rid of the bridge pickup for a 57 classic plus, and the neck pickup with a 57 classic. Although the 490r isn't too bad, would actually be pretty good in the bridge position to me going through my Mesa Five 35 half stack. I lucked out and got the case that came with the 2018 models with my 2017 model and it's a very nice case for sure, I was thinking of buying an Epiphone hard case for it untill I laid hands on the 2018 soft case, it's really a nice case.

As someone who is debating on getting the 2017 or 2018 tribute model (in gold top of course), are there any noticeable differences? If you were in my shoes, what model year would you pick?

The 9 hole weight relief typically will reduce the weight by LESS than half a pound. For a roughly 9 pound average Les Paul, this isn't going to make much of a difference. The modern weight relief is really what people need to look for if they want a light Les Paul. Although something about a heavy guitar makes me think it has better tone than it probably does.

There is another way of telling the year of the model; the maple cap on the side of the body are lighter in color and looks almost like a binding, meanwhile on the 2018 model the maple cap is darker, i personally think the 2017 maple cap looks much cooler and gives it a sweeter contrast.

Great demo, seriously considering this guitar - quick question: Can you explain your reading set up? Are you using an amp head with direct line out or using a load box etc? Cheers!
@agufish
@agufish 6 жыл бұрын
I'm running the guitar into a tube head, which is then going into my Two Notes Torpedo Live. The Torpedo is essentially a virtual cabinet, and the output goes directly into my computer (I'm using Logic Pro X to record). It means I get real tube distortion from the amp, the micing is consistent with no background noise and my neighbors don't get pissed at me for making an assload of noise lol.

Agufish thanks for the reply, I’m trying to figure out whether to go the loadbox route or not - if you wanted to add effects pedals would you use real pedals or virtually in logic? Sorry but I’m a newbie to home recording!

Hey dude! My signal chain is always in the description. I'm not a huge pedal guy, it's usually just the Ibanez TS9 or the Horizon Devices Precision Drive to add saturation and tighten everything up.

Agufish- Correct me if I am wrong but this is essentially a Studio without the push/pull coil taps and no weight relief, correct? Seems almost identical to my 2012 Studio which is a really nice playing guitar.
@agufish
@agufish 6 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for your particular model since I'm not familiar with that year, but at least between this one and the 2018 Studio, there are quite a few differences. This year's Studio has 57 Classic pickups (far superior to these, IMO), a gloss finish, neck binding (which I guess doesn't make a difference for playability), and yes, weight-relief. IIRC, the Studios also have proper Grover tuners, whereas these have the slightly cheaper Vintage-style tuning machines.
@leftyfusion88
@leftyfusion88 6 жыл бұрын
Ahh, the 2012 has these same 498 490 pups and yes the 57's are much sweeter. I have them(zebra classic 57's) in my LP CLassic and they are great however these aren't bad at all. Thanks for the reply. With all the new models now I try to pick up the subtle differences in each vs price point. I like this 2018 because of the plain honey burst finish mainly. If it plays like my studio I'll be happy. I'm a lefty and we are limited in colors so seeing this peaked my curiosity. Thanks for the reply and great review.

I thought of this les paul for menny years (a Gibson les paul with a 1 piece mahogany body and neck non weight relive for around 1,000 dollar's) this is a you can gig with out worrying about and it looks and sounds great And the 3 les pauls weight are 9,'6,> 8.11 and 8.10 lbs, so there is no problems with comfort...
