Great guitar Phil. I love my SG. My only concern was a bit of neck dive. I actually had the force tuners so I switched them for som open back Sperzel tuners. Fixed it right up.

There is only one way to "relatively" balance a neck heavy SG. It certainly isn't to the liking of most SG lovers, but the strap button which is screwed to the neck joint must be relocated at the tip of the upper horn, and if possible with a little extension like VOX did on some of their double cutaway guitars. If you have an affordable SG type guitar, like an Epiphone for instance, and you don't care too much about the "esthetic" impact of such a modification, you can definitely try that mod. It may not "totally" balance a very neck heavy guitar, but it will greatly improve the overall balance of the guitar. I have a second hand 2012 SG Special that I got for dirt cheap, and with a little strap extension, the "trick" worked PERFECTLY ... same with my ESP LTD Viper 1000 Deluxe with Seymour Duncan PUs (which is a SG type guitar, with a heavier and thicker body, and a way better sustain and tone than any SG that I have ever played), on that guitar I just changed the location of the strap from the back of the upper horn to the tip of the upper horn with a little strap extension, and that guitar became perfectly balanced after that mod.

Don't you find that the PAF pickups get far too mushy when you use even slightly too much gain? I have a couple of SG's and the one with '57 classics sounds so much better when I turn the gain down a bit, and play it cleaner. They have a lovely top end sparkle which I really like, and they are very dynamic. I might replace the magnet in the bridge for an Alnico IV, because they tend to sound a bit tighter. A lot of people think they are nothing special, but I disagree, and think they are the best pickups Gibson make. I know this SG has the '61's and it doesn't really have that sparkle. Don't understand why Gibson keep messing with the pickup specs. How many PAF type pickups do they need to make? The '57 classics were what Seth Lover intended the original pickups to sound like. Modern day "Burstbuckers" (The "1" definitely, and possibly the "2" for a slightly hotter sound) are the closest they do to an old PAF, that they make, for the "vintage" sound. They seem to make so many, and it get's really confusing!!!

100% the most heart-breakingly underrated guitar on far too many forums. I would play an SG over a Les Paul every day of the week. If I didn't have the option of a Tele, this would be the direction I would go. Thanks for showing it some love, Phillip!

After playing guitar for years in my teens and 20's,, work, marriage; and kids, slowly stopped me from playing for several years. I decided to pick up a new Gibson SG a years ago to play for fun. Love my SG. Now I play almost every day, bought a strat, Gibson Less Paul, a PRS , and four more guitars. All the guitars I dreamed of owning one day as a kid. I love the variety of each guitar, but that SG will always be my favorite.

@@9imack Simple, alternative guitarists snapped up high quality offset body guitars secondhand usually after they went out of fashion with mainstream rock guitarists in the early seventies and again in the late eighties for a bargain price, today the hipsters are copying the style of guitar buying but are often playing brand new offsets because they look alternative!

Congrats on NGD! I dig it Phillip. I rescued a 2010 Cherry SG Standard at GC on Saturday. So, NGD for me too! It has lived its entire life in its case. Nearly zero play wear and the only thing wrong with it is a small lacquer chip from a hangar, which likely happened before it was purchased. I'm super happy with my SG, and I hope you are too Phil.

I bought this exact 2018 model six months ago with this finish and I have to say I'm totally happy with it. This specific "autumn shade" finish is lovely and all my friends are crazy about it. This is an all-around quality guitar which just sounds is great. Actually it sounds like an SG-nothing more, nothing less. Plug it straight into your valve amp and voila, you're Angus Young. Frankly, there's no honest reason to badmouth Gibson on this one. I don't regret my purchase and I would definitely buy it again.

Well it was a no brainer the the list of negative stuff on the special just didn't end. That guitar was cursed. So in he choosed wisely and brought home a beautiful pitch black sg standard 2018 .

The way my dad explained it to me when he was a kid was if you couldn't afford a les paul you got an sg and if you couldn't afford that you bought a fender. The point being they are all good but the sg has always been my personal favorite. I have a 1993 sg deluxe and the only modification i have done to is put chrome covers on the pickups to fatten up the sound.

I own a Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster, Two Gibson Les Pauls, a Gibson SG, and an M111, two PRS custom 24's, and three Ibanezs. And I don't see why people can't use what ever guitar they want to? I mainly use one of the PRS's, as I've got a bad back, and I find the Les Pauls a bit much after a while! But my SG is a faded special, and I've added some Bare Knuckle Mule pickups to it, changed the knobs, the truss rod cover, and fitted some strap locks, and it's just brilliant! The tone is amazing. The fadeds now have maple necks, but mine is a 2004, and has a mahogany neck, and rosewood fingerboard. The fadeds can be picked up very cheaply, and with a few upgrades, will still work out less the the standard, but would I buy a standard if I had the money, yes I would!

my first e guitar was a 1961 walnut sg w bigsby with a repaired neck break but played well and stayed in tune. Because i was young and inexperienced i devalued it by making "upgrades" and ultimately sold it for pennies on the dollar compared towhat it would be worth if i had just left it alone. That guitar made enough of an impression on me that I always wanted another and 30 years later picked up a 2011 honeyburst Standard w burstbuckers 1 and 3. I love it!

I have been fortunate enough over the years to have bought, swapped and sold many Gibson and Fender guitars. Though out of the Gibson line my fav to be the Les Paul, I really like and still have an SG. It’s got chops when you need and will play clean tones like a champ. Definitely a guitar others should look at. Gibson is putting out outstanding guitars now and would highly recommend.

The SG is their best selling guitar. My biggest gripe is that the color selection for the SGs is so limited. You can realistically get a black or a red SG. Sometimes they’ll have the burst like yours that looks great. White is even more rare. Surely they could offer a couple other colors and swap options each year. How about TV Yellow, Pelham blue, or silverburst?

I am a Les Paul guy. I have owned 3 and still have 2. The most recent is a 2016 LP Traditional Plus. Really impressive. The only SG that I ever owned was a 1973 Double neck. The 6 string SG neck was really a great pleasure to play. I sold it in the late 80s and still miss it. That also had the balance situation where the headstocks were pulling towards the floor. I had to hold it up at the same time that was playing and that is probably a big part of those classic Jimmy Page poses. You really need to get it situated for the parts that you intend to play. I am impressed with the 2018 in the video. I love the finish.

I bought the 2018 SG Faded. It’s a great version with the same 61t and 61r pickups just not covered. One thing to think about the faded is that the tuners are vintage Gibson deluxe tuners so there is less neck dive on the faded SG. Cheers!

I've been a Fender guy for 37 years and finally got myself a Gibson SG its the 2015 marmite model but I actually love it(Tuners are going though i'm fitting grovers) I can play any genre of Music on it and they are more than just a rock/Blues machine, Neck dive is cured by using a decent Leather strap and also if you get numb thumb like me on certain necks(this one included) ive found that tipping the neck up so the nut is almost at Ear level cures it, Problem solved(5 guitars later).

The comparison between the Strat and SG is spot on, however there is one more notable difference... the Strat has a vibrato system. Whether it's worth it to have a vibrato is definitely a matter of taste from one player to another, but it seems like manufacturing a guitar with vibrato would take more time and effort than a hardtail which might give the Strat a tiny bit more value for the money. Both are great guitars.

Phil I gigged 6-nights/WK with a '70 SG Std for.several yrs - neck-dives are part of the fun. I do not think saving a few ounces w different tuners would make a lick of difference - but there is a sure-fire fix... Simply relocate the upper strap button from the heel -to the end of the upper horn, or add a second button there and leave the factory button "stock". Have fun!

That SG is really sharp looking. I really like that wide looking neck on the SG. Always loved the chrome looking pickup covers on SG's and les pauls.

I've always been a Fender and PRS guy. I ended up getting a good deal on an old flying V and fell on love with it. Since then I've bought a black and gold Les Paul studio, AMD just recently picked one of these up in the ebony finish. Hands down best guitar I've ever purchased. I find myself picking up more than any of my other guitars. Definitely an amazing guitar

I picked up a 2015 SG special for 550 € incl. case new. To me it is a fatastic guitar, not only because of the price. It plays and sounds great and the quality on this particular model is very good. String height is very low without buzing and easy to adjust with zero fret nut. I even like the robo tuners, but that is personal taste.

What Phillip is saying about PLEK is accurate...I have a 2019 Les Paul Classic that was PLEK from the factory but then I had Sweetwater do their Plex and set up too and I have to say the guitar beyond fantastic. LOW action,no dead spots, bends are a pleasure, stays in tune...a tone beast!

I always wanted a Les Paul but I couldn't justify the price for my lifestyle. I found a 2008 SG Special in Pelham Blue with matching headstock and an ebony fretboard. It's a fantastic guitar and stays in tune quite well. It needs to go into the luthier to get the frets cleaned up and a little fret sprout fixed. But otherwise it's great. I have a 68 Princeton Reverb like the one in the video as well. Those two together are more than enough to satisfy my hobby guitar skills.

I love my SGs. I have 2 of them, and I love my American Strats, I have 2 of them as well. They both do a thing that is very specific to that model. If I’m jamming my classic rock it’s an SG, if I’m plying the Blues or country it’s the strat. But even with all that being said, I still grab the Tele most of the time😬✌️

I have a lot of guitars, but the only one I've purchased new is my 2015 SG Std (I've got big hands, no problem with wider fretboard - I actually like it). Got it cheap after they wouldn't sell. Now that I've ditched the robotuners it even stays in tune!. Great guitar - no neckdive!

Thanks Phillip for your insight. I love your content. I just bought one today for AUD$2,230. My first Gibson. I’m a lefty. Hoping the quality is there.

The SG has always been (to me) the epitome of "rock", and a great utility guitar (I feel similarly about Teles). Thanks for a very candid and honest evaluation! :)

Been a fan of your channel for a while and never saw this NGD vid. I too had to get the 2018 SG Standard in Autumn Shade. Ditto to all of your comments... I also had to do a fine set-up tweek / intonation and bridge adj. And the neck dive! ugh!! You would think that Gibson would have come up with a solution to this 60-year-old problem.

I like my Les Paul special Plus 2016 and it was a litttle under 1300$. A good Gibson for a fair price! I’ve changed the pickups and it’s even better now.....

So I've got a '69 Strat & a '92 SG & I love them both because they're different animals. The Strat is SSS & it's a great Blues guitar, whereas the SG is more of a Rock beast with those Gibson 'buckers. Of course you can use pedals to beef up your tone to play any style with either guitar but sometimes you just wanna plug straight into a nice valve amp & let rip. The Strat is probably the more versatile of the two but both guitars can do stuff the other can't do as well.

I bought an SG in 2014. I'd always wanted one & broke the bank to buy it. The sound of it was everything I've always dreamed of but it wouldn't stay in tune for a full song. I took it to a very high end luthier to ensure it was set set up correctly, but it just wouldn't stay in tune. I sold it at a massive loss. The Gibson SG is the right guitar for me as a player but I can't justify spending that much money on a guitar that I know won't stay in tune.

I've got a 2017 SG for the amazing price of $800 and I love it!! The only difference in the 2017 & 18 is pickups, 17 has 57 classics and 18 has what they are calling a 61's I believe. Beautiful guitar Phil!
