53:10 Advice from Buzz Osborne for guitarists - songwriting vs riffs
Buzz Osborne is a creative and prolific songwriter. As a founding member of the band the Melvins, he became one of the most influential figures in the Pacific Northwest alternative rock scene starting in the 1980s. His unique approach to guitar and melodies was a major influence on the grunge community, including influencing his friend, Kurt Cobain. Buzz continues performing and touring with the Melvins and plays guitar with the experimental metal group Fantômas - featuring Mike Patton of Faith No More - and another side project, Venomous Concept - a collaboration with Shane Embury of Napalm Death and Kevin Sharp of Brutal Truth. He has performed on albums by Lustmord and Tool and produced projects by the Cows and Goatsnake. In recent years, Buzzo has also established himself as a solo artist, releasing two acoustic albums under the King Buzzo moniker.

Buzz would be in the surface level, Riff Gods imo lol. Im more of a fan of rhythm based guitarists who focus on writing and composing killer riffs and could care less about lightning speed shredding guitar solos.. like Buzz, Tony Iommi, and Matt Pike from Sleep, and High On Fire. The guitarist in doom metal and Stoner rock bands are some of the most underrated guitarists who write awesome guitar riffs.

One of the most influential guitarists ever...he was one of those who started the grunge movement or genre, and was one of the pioneers of the Sludge Metal genre. My favorite guitar player. And ya'll did an episode of riff lords about him. Christmas come early, right on. If you ever have the opportunity to catch a Melvins show, dont pass it up. I remember hearing about them back in the early 90's because of the Cobain/ Nirvana connection, it seemed like people were trying to lump them in with a sound or an idea. When I heard them I was pleasantly THRILLED to come across a band so heavy and unique. Thanks for this episode Gibson, this series is kicking ass.

I’m not even a musician but I loved seeing Buzz showing a glimpse of the construction that went into the Melvins’ wonderfully epic anthology of pure expressive soul, sweat, story, & song. Buzz is probably my favorite guitarist out of the hundreds to thousands that I like & enjoy. I find the Melvins’ music to be the most consistently moving & I frequently feel that they are my favorite all-around band. Buzz even shared a good variety of their songs which are among my favorites. I think the majority of my favorite bands & artists are mostly self taught, play by ear, & unorthodox to say the least. They tend to be the most moving, soulful, & original.

I met the Melvins during sound check in 1995 for the first time and got into talking to them. They were the most fun, friendly and down to earth people imaginable. We talked about the usual stuff, garage rock kids talk about hangin out in the basement: Sabbath, Queen, Stooges, Black Flag, Movies. I could easily hang out every weekend with these guys and discuss culture stuff and it would never be boring.

Helluva band. I was lucky enough to see them on the Stoner Witch tour back in the 90's. Excellent show, then they performed again for free the next day at The Record Exchange. One of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me. So nice that I crossed them off my "People to Kill" list. I don't think they were actually on the list but I added them just so I could cross them off. Thanks Gang!

Love King Buzzo and the Melvins, and it's awesome he slows down the tunes and shows us how he does it. Generous, actually. I was big into noise rock ala AmRep/TouchnGo labels in late 80s-90s. But the moment I heard Honey Bucket from Houdini, my head exploded. It still does every time I listen to it. Thnx Gibson for showcasing an amazing, yet often overlooked guitar god.
