Richie Faulkner's "do whatever you prefer" attitude is so nice and brings a humble kick to a community that likes to nitpick over technique and precision. This guy is what rock and roll is about and is keeping its spirit alive and well.

I love the fact that Richie took the time to show an entire downstroke version of Painkiller using the "Hetfield Right Hand" and then the traditional up-down picking style. He was really able to demonstrate the subtle yet different groove of the riff when played using the techniques. Richie had massive shoes to fill, and he was able to fill them quite well in his stylish white loafers.

Actually, the version Richie plays is not really a traditionnal up-down pattern. With a classic up-down pattern, the pick would sometimes attack the A string with an up stroke, which isn't ideal for this specific riff. Richie always plays the A string with a down stroke, which means he has to break the alternate picking pattern at some point. The actual pattern he plays is : down (A string) - up (E string) - down (E string), and you repeat this pattern with a down stroke on the A string, so 2 consecutives down strokes. It's a very cool picking pattern that can be used on a lot of metal tunes that have challenging down picking only parts : Number of the Beast, Blackened, and of course Master of Puppets etc. It's a good compromise when you don't have the speed to play fast down picks parts, it will sound way closer to the real thing than playing strict alternate picking.

@@Tashkis No I agree its a good theory, but Live Ritchie uses ENGL amps, not Marshall, 2 his board choice is more reminiscent of what zakk wylde would use, which is like rotovibe and wah. But in this you can see the cable running towards the amps with no pedals in the chain, but to get the overdrive the unit on top of the one marshall head lookes to be a voltage regulator which allows for more gain out of a cranked marshall head. andthing stereo wise to get that full chorus sound may be the mics and how they are eq'd, but the rig itself has no chorus for this.

I like the insight he gives about the in between "guitar noises". Some of that is what differentiates someone who can play technically well and someone who gives the song a groove or a jive that brings it to life. Good stuff. Thanks Richie.
