The Benchdogs stuff does look lovely quality and they certainly are coming up with some clever solutions (along with the community!). Being handy with design software (graphic designer by day) I can't help but think I'd at least break even with a cheap cnc router knocking up my own gear / jigs. It all adds up when you are trying your hand at a lot of different things.

This is great! You could have the locating pin on a piece of spring steel so that it finds the next hole automatically without you needing to look. Just lift the pin out of its hole, start to slide the jig and let it spring in to the next hole.

Nicely done! One jig I’ve always wanted to build is a version of the True Precision brand cabinet handle drilling jig. But instead of having tension setting screws, it would be nice to have actual millimetre incremental detents for a stop pin to set in to. Hope this makes sense. The knock offs aren’t worth while in my opinion, and the premium brand is almost $400 CAD. And the set screws are annoying and create bumps on the locking surface over time, and make it hard to lock in at exact positions sometimes. It would be great if Festool made it, because what I’m imagining would work exactly like the extensions for the domino. It’s adjustment works along a rule with millimetre increment detents.

Another fine jig, I have the holy rail and used it on a few projects. It works great within it's limitations. First it's almost impossible to use it on assemble cabinet. Second it's a pita if your cabinet is custom size and not following the 90mm system. Thanks for sharing Peter

Thanks! And yes! Whenever I was asked to retro-fit shelves in existing cabinets I’d always use a simple drilling guide - messy, but much simpler to make it fit!👍

Excellent video and another great product from Benchdogs. I do wish there was a nice simple but durable shelf pin jig on the market that didn't cost the earth. A simple slab of metal or thick acrylic with holes for a router guide bush (instead of the 5 mm holes you get on most cheap jigs), a simple fence with a few holes for different backset positions, and a removable end fence to hook over the end of a panel. I'm sure this jig works very well, but it's still reliant on accuracy of the marks, alignment of the drill bit on the marks, accuracy of the drill press etc. Something like the above but CNC cut would be a great tool to have, perhaps supplied with a matching guide bush for absolute accuracy, which would allow shelf pin holes to be made to within fractions of a millimetre.

Thanks! As I say in the vid, the benchdogs rulers have an end hook accessory - or you can put a pin through a hole - so you’re not reliant on aligning against a mark. The trouble is that what you’ve described, whilst not complex, isn’t trivial either, and the costs do add up. Plus there are practical considerations too - if it references off the end of the carcass, how long does it need to be; too long and shipping becomes an issue, too short and it’ll be no good for longer carcasses! But I agree, I think there’s space in the sub-£100 category for a decent quality multi-purpose jig, and I do have something cooking in that area, so watch this space! 👍👍

Simple, elegant and effective. 32 X 3=96. Change the the router bit to 20mm and you can make a MFT top.

It will obviously also work in those parts of the world where shelf supports are 6mm or 6.35mm (1/4 inch) like the US or Australia (which has 5, 6 & 6.35 mixed up all over the place) - just change the router bit to suit.

Good ideas and also a good idea to provide the kit for those that don't have the full machine shop. That said, if I was making it, it would be in aluminium in my machine shop.

I would drill right through the template with a Hing Hole Drill for 3mm shelf supports. But great DIY solution.

Well done. Bench Dogs looks to be providing the initial precision and extenability that is needed for drilling the pin holes for the 32mm spacing. I found that using the plastic templates, after a few extensions of laying the template down they get off a bit and the holes on the other side or in back don't align correctly anymore. That's why I eventually bought the Holly Rail. I use my old plastic guides to add more pin holes to existing assemblies.

Just dashed into my kitchen to check my Ikea cabinets, and heavens above they didn't respect the norms, as the hole spacing was 50mm on centre...the Swedes are such rebels 😉

Getting ready to add shelf pin holes and this was a very interesting build. You have built tall cabinets in the past, with euro hinges in tall doors did you find that you placed the pin holes farther away from the edge so as not to conflict with the hinge plate positioning? this may effect the jig creation. (i have 48" wide carcasses already on walls)

It was very much dependent on the job; sometimes it's easier to stick to the '32mm system' and have the hinges in the same run of holes as the shelf pins, sometimes I'd set them back a little to avoid it.

Silly question from a newb to all this, what router bit did you use? Was it a spiral or straight bit? Thank you for all the vids, you’ve inspired me to make cabinet doors and built in wardrobes for our bedroom. Still lots to learn but loving every step!

The only silly question is the one you don’t ask - and thanks for your kind comments! I use a spiral upcut bit, solid carbide, 4.76mm as I found it was the best option for the commonly available shelf pins eg hafele. There’s a link in the video description to the one I recommend. 👍

Small tip to make it much better is put a spring of the right length around the pin and you wont need to remove it it will just pop up automatically and you can just push it down to locate it

Hi peter! I noticed your blue flag stop on the drill press station... is that the one 3d printed? I´ve 3 printed the body and knob, but I´m not finding a way to make a sturdy flag, which one is yours?

The router bit says 4.75 but shelf supports are 5mm. Does this not make them a really tight fit

Shelf pins really aren’t 5mm - get a decent set of callipers and measure some. 4.76mm (3/16”) is a snug fit for most commonly available commercial shelf pins. 👍

The plans are available on my Etsy store still, but the near-total lack of interest in the jig has meant it's not really worth listing. I have another shelf-pin solution coming along soon. 👍

I own many Swedish design furniture, and I can honestly say I never ever rearrange the shelves. I put them in after putting the whateveritis together, and then just leave them. Are there people who actually rearrange the shelves? Nice jig, though, Peter!

Depends on wether the use of the cabinet changes over time; mostly though, it’s to give the flexibility of being able to adjust the shelves to accommodate different sized stuff when you,first get the cabinet. 👍
