It's a pin of shame because, just like the video (in your opinion), your comment is a complete waste of time and has absolutely no value or point. You really clicked on a video called "Gigabyte Aero 16 XE4 - Rant Mode", and then stopped to think "Damn! Wait a second! He's just ranting about the laptop!" ...Duh. I really feel like there's one single person to blame for your dissatisfaction and that person might have issues admitting their mistakes.

For the linux part, you can try to see if thermald is installed. thermald is the linux equivalent of intel DPTF and allows the processor to utilize thermal headroom above what's defined in the firmware. Another thing to try is this command: echo performance | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/policy*/energy_performance_preference which sets the epp target for all cores. I have an SFG14-71 that does not use above 35W without thermald and won't boost above 3.8Ghz on the p-cores without the second command.

I bought the XE5 model with 3070Ti early last year for a steep discount ($1300) to use as a work laptop. I share most of your grievances with it. The 4K OLED panel is lovely but it's about the only major win the laptop's got. The 12700H struggled to live up to its full potential thanks to GB's stupid tuning... even then, with brightness turned down and 99Wh battery, battery life was never great. I ended up selling it because the VPN client that's essential for my work keeps blue screening the laptop. Months after selling it the buyer contacted me about the display producing no output; luckily GB's local warranty took care of it, but it does remind me of the laptop's single biggest potential flaw: the display ribbon cable is exposed.

My XE5 did have the ports USB-C work for charging, but only with like, constantly pulling it and out. Also I have the same problems about the display. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doens't! And if its the latter, it usually requies way too much percussive maintainence to get it to work

thank you for bringing up the lesser talked about aspects of performance laptop: how are they to live with as not just a performance object but an actual portable computer? i find that larger channels ONLY talk about the performance and not how it actually is to live with as a laptop. also i find your commentary on design durability catharitc, as a phone/computer repair tech. hinges explode constantly and these issues NEED to be more well known.

Maybe the performance issue on linux might be due to performance settings. I use ubuntu on my crappy old laptop and it limits the cpu to 2.00 ghz when it can turbo up to 3.4 ghz. I fixed it by switching it from balanced to high performance.

My issue with mine is the power button. I carry mine in a backpack to the coffee shop to find 9 out of 10 times it had turned on (hot and battery draining) while being transported. The power button stuck up just enough to be activated by the slight pressure of the closed screen being pressed on by my books in the backpack.

The sound in 12:53 reminds me of my dell precision 7540, the fans have this "whine". In my case is due to Sunon fans, I've seen other owners of the same machine swap the fans for Delta branded ones, which have a more tolerable noise.

Lol, got this at random, i have similar feelings to my old AORUS x3 plus V7? I think, was one of the best gaming laptops that "Just kinda works i guess" i used to mine on it when i was bored xD had a similar fan sound profile too, was it perfect? No lol, has many similar features (I have no idea if i hated writing on it, i did often game, but looking back, it might very well of had that same keyboard issue I have owned 1 laptop that i disliked typing on and it was either my aorus, or a cheap TUF asus?) I just never heard of a "Glowing review" from a aorus laptop again, then they done the Gigabyte aero aorus merge after that for the range, mostly a name change. Also i can relate to the linux issues, i messed around with linux that had identical problems on the x3v7 i had and just thought it was kinda normal, yet many other devices i have since then booted linux on have been fine, including the Stealth 16 i have had for a week hah. The stealth 16 studio, is it perfect? lol no, its likely gonna burn your hands off how hot the top gets, general temps are fine tbh, but i got good hopes that this will last me some time, had it for a week but its been so easy to get along with and that says a lot about any laptop, I also use a Lifebook u7313 with linux that is just a blessing to use overall.

I have the 17 inch version with the 4k mini led panel, I didnt have any issues with the keyboard, I used many keyboard and I fel like its a good keyboard and I have massive hands. The 17 inch version charges via USB C just fine, but only 100W and upwards, which sucks because id love to use a 65W charger. The speakers sound fine. The brightness buttons dont work on mine either, but I always run max brightness anyways, the gigabyte software didnt fix this either. Gigabyte Control Center, is the worst Laptop software ive ever used, Razer Synapse by far the best and armory crate actually being the second best, I dont get the complaints people have with it. I use windows, a Linux VM runs fine. The biggest problem with the Laptop is the cooling solution, its not been scaled up to the bigger chassis, theres giant empty spaces inside the chassis, the fans are super quite, the CPU and GPU temps are super cool and yet the palmrest area is painfully warm, gaming on it with the built in keyboard, is impossible. I bought it because I wanted a powerful mini led Laptop with a numpad for less than 1.5k, its pretty good at that, basically the best Laptop with the wrong software and painful keyboard palmrest. My next Laptop will be the Lenovo Yoga pro 9i with the miniled panel and the 4060, its around 2k and it doesnt have any of the issues. Also the Battery, I minimized System Wattage down to 10W and yet I only get 2 hours and that point it cant decode videos at all, which my Razer Book 13 could easily do at 3W, intel is to blame for that one. But the battery life is so bad, people forget that the other stuff apart from screen, CPU and GPU also draw power and this thing absolutely chugs it. the Razer Book ran on 4W absolute total just fine (calculated from full charge draining rate) this thing without CPU and GPU draws at least 20W if not more, its horrendous. Its such a shame, because its the best quality chassis ive ever seen in a Laptop, even beats the macbooks in terms of shear girth, the screen is the most beautiful ive ever seen too. The I7 and the 3070ti is such a good combo if intel wasnt sniffing powder.

Having to install proprietary Windows-only software to have basic stuff like brightness keys to work makes this laptop an INSTANT pass for me. No Linux support for basic functions, no buy. Even if it's windows only, its only a matter of time until the driver gets too old and not supported into new windows versions anymore. Not to mention all the other Linux problems you mentioned. Getting a laptop that is extremely dependent on Windows is an extremely stupid move in 2024+

Man, I have a bone to pick with Gigabyte. A while ago a client brought his laptop to me with a fan issue. This machine was under a year old, so I decided to go directly to Gigabyte to purchase a new set of fans. They refused to sell me parts and said parts are no longer available. This machine was technically still under warranty, but I simply wanted to purchase fans from them for a quicker turn around time. Is that even legal? Speaking of purchasing parts directly from manufacturers - Asus, why the bloody hell won't you let me buy parts from you? I hate MSI machines for their hinges and various other issues, but at least they'll sell me parts. Now I'm the one ranting.

I think the keyboard size thing depends on people's preferences. My ZBook Studio G7's Q-to-E size is also 175mm with over 34mm of dead space, plus my hand is on the larger size...but I can type on it all day without issues. And holy shit, that fan noise. If you didn't tell me that it's actually fan noise from a laptop, I'd start thinking of it as a torture device invented by the CIA. Also unrelated, but the Aero 16's hinges doesn't seem to be very good either in my opinion, seeing as how it's wobbling around from just you lightly touching the laptop. I'd never expect to see hinges that loose from a laptop this expensive, the last time I've seen this is from a MY2022 HP Victus...of which were very famous for having a really shitty hinge design.

And this is why ''creator'' laptops are forever going to be a giant scam 99% of the time. Because even though OLED is cheap now, OEM's still don't put it on gaming laptops because they know for a fact that gaming laptops will crap all over these so called creator laptops if they got those high end OLED's. Even my budget nitro 5 charges via USB c though only supports upto 135w. It'd likely work as a very good creator laptop had Acer put a 2.8k OLED 60/90/120hz panel option and a 1080p 60/90/144hz option. Thats on top of coming with soldered ram most of the time, limiting your upgrade potential. The 6800h ddr5 ram nitro 5 can potentially get upto 96gb of ram. Its 3 storage slots can accommodate upto 24tb of ssd storage. And you'd still get ~6hr of battery life due to ryzen. What makes me mad is the lack of advanced bios options on gaming laptops and creator ones. Why is it important? Because it allows me to bypass intel's dumb UV restriction by doing the AC loadline tweak to UV instead like I've done by accessing my nitro 5's advanced bios. The IMON tweak lets me make my 3070ti use its full 150w TDP no matter what. And the nitro 5 handles this increased wattage just fine and with a repaste with good thermal paste I can even keep temps well under control. It handles it so well that CP2077 maxed out at 1440p with DLSS Q + mods + reshade still let my i7 12650h hold 3.8 to 4.1ghz with ~50-60w being used and the 3070ti holding a solid 150w TDP with 1700-1740mhz clocks.

I just want a chinese manufacturer to copy the ThinkPad T480, everything it does well. And it does _everything_ well, though I want to have a 9-cell 99Wh battery instead of a 6-cell battery that you can't hold the laptop on to. Power Bridge isn't necessary as it would drive the R&D and production costs up a lot, but limiting the charge to 60-80% and having a 99Wh battery is. Lenovo doesn't want to produce laptops that you can use for a long time anymore. They threw a bone to the legacy ThinkPad fans with the newly announced T14, but looking at the promo material - they again radically changed the final version compared to the prototype, removing one of the RAM slots and turning into yet another T480s-type overpriced trash. I DON'T WANT A NEEDLESSLY EXPENSIVE THIN LAPTOP, JUST MAKE ONE WITH STEEL HINGES, PROPERLY FAT AND ROBUST!!!

@samscam951 4 ай бұрын
I made a similar experience: My T14 Gen. 2 is nice and all, but in all honesty my T430 and X230 are both modded to the tits and run as fast, maybe even faster on Windows 11 and Linux as the T14. I have no explanation why you would cripple a modern device with heat throttling (ON AN i5) to make it another 2mm thinner. Granted the x30-Series sere bricks but they still chugg along fine for office and coding tasks.
@one_step_sideways
@one_step_sideways 4 ай бұрын
@@samscam951 This is because all these companies realized that they absolutely need to sell you a meme of "thin&light" to make you buy new laptops long before they would have otherwise been obsolete. Planned obsolescence in a shellnut. Case and point: Asus was making ROG Zephyrus G14/G15 for 4 years now. They got the formula just right in 2023 for G14 - a hefty laptop with a big battery, a single expandable RAM slot, and great cooling to be able to put an RTX 4060 with a Ryzen 7 there. But uh-oh, looks like existing G14 2020/2021 don't intend to upgrade for some time now. What do we do? Why, the G14 2024, of course: - 2mm thinner - 300 grams lighter - no upgradable RAM - weaker graphics - a CPU that literally has to throttle to 12 watts to make room for the GPU running at 85 watts - a severely downgraded LED gimmick that costs like $5 to make - sounds like an actual jet engine Worst of all: - costs like an actual jet engine And how are they going to make you upgrade to something new later on? By selling 80% of their G14 laptops with just 16GB soldered RAM, of course. Welcome to 2017. Don't you dare play games off battery power on your expensive iGPU.
