Gil Scott-Heron. Great song. Great understanding of how addiction works. And great groove.

Amazing Lyricism from this cat. Paved the way for a lot of the real shit over the years. Despite all the wack shit the industry pushes the real shit is undeniable. And we owe a lot to people like him for having that influence

As a recovering addict, this song helps me when I need strength, reminds me of a place I never want to be again, he nailed it right on the head.

When you know that when he says "home" he doesn't mean the United States of America, or your local community, or your residential living situation, but your own personal self -- you as your home -- the song takes on a different meaning. Then the home is the place of self-hatred that needs to be numbed by dope and the hatred of being controlled by/out of control living/dying by addiction.

Nah. Home is both the heroin and the home of his family, both were once places of escape and refuge, but now both of them have scarred him, and he has no idea where else to go as the family that nags him doesn’t want him, and the heroin which was once an escape has turned to addiction.

Thank you for that summation. It helps me better understand. I always thought he was speaking about one's home-life/upbringing, how it can cause a person to become damaged thus leading to "self medicating" in an attempt to ease the pain.

@@moonsiemeda5054 Thank you for your acknowledgment. I believe the concept of "home" in this song by definition incorporates your upbringing, home life, and the circumstances you are born into. Everything you ever see, do, and experience. But essentially you live with and by yourself in your heart, soul, thoughts, feelings, and memories. Only YOU know all of those things because it has been you who has lived with all of it in your every waking hour -- and even in your dreams. Or nightmares. So ultimately your Self is your home. Ultimately and in the final analysis, you live with and by yourself, you love with and by yourself, you hate with and by yourself, you suffer with and by yourself, and you die with and by yourself. And you are the heir of your actions. So, take care of yourSelf. 🙂
