I sat across from this brother, in a NY subway. I could not believe that I was seating in front of this icon of music and poetry. One half of my heart was filled with happiness and amazement and the other was filled with sadness and anger; as I observed him constantly falling Sleep because of a Heroin high. I still love him because in his life he took our pain and made it his, without regard for the consequences.

I remember it was a winter night in the year 2016 and I was in a hostel in Istanbul called "Chillout" when a British guy named "Johnny" sang this song and played it very well with my steel string guitar. That was the first time I heard this song and the lyrics and the melody got stuck in my head. After one year of mysterious troubles that led me to a place, disconnected from the world outside, I searched for this music. I didn't know the artist, and I didn't know the title of the song, so I searched the few lines of the lyrics that I luckily remembered. It's one of my favourite songs of all time. And this was the story that I became a big fan of Gill Scott Heron. May he rest in peace

So that the world, so that the world Can watch you die? Why did you have to mention you were white? I didn't know this music was for just black people. Music transcends race. It doesn't matter what colour you are, if a pieces of music grabs you. It's people like you who want to keep this race bullshit going and going. When people can truly forget about their skin tone, maybe then they'll be more tolerance. That goes for all colors of people. We're all one race anyway...The human one!

One down to earth brother. In reality we are all hooked and strung out on something, shit was nourished and grown in us all and we pretend there's no chaos and madness around us, at least Gil had the courage to voice it. We get up day to day look in the mirror and pretend we are doing fine, zip our lips up and step out into the madness. The whole world's watching each one of us die. One of my favorite songs.

This song always brings me to tears. It’s like he was prophesying about his own demise. Screaming but no one was listening/hearing. Same with Marvin Gaye. I cry all thru his ‘What’s Going On’ album; but specifically when he sings ‘Flyin High In The Friendly Skies’; just like Gil he has demons he’s trying to exercise … but unfortunately he can’t . Gil and Marvin were two great writers, singers, composers, arrangers, and lyricists. Both immensely talented. Both taken down by the same vice that they both sang so eloquently about.

Not just about drug addiction but addresses how a person's home-life/family especially if it is filled with chaos can turn someone into and anti-social type; damages you. I think it could also use to address intra-racism/colorism that people of your own kind discriminating, hating, harming each other.

Never experienced addiction but the song speaks to a sense of hopelessness I understand quite clearly. A desperate melancholy peppered with bitterness born of rejection of those you’d hope to find refuge. To seek salvation from the demons that might swallow you whole from the inside out. A sad realization that you’re a doomed pariah and you’re alone in a losing battle with what seemed a predetermined outcome no matter how hard you tried. No one’s coming to save you. No ever did and ever will. Finally a the killing blow comes from the cold realization that it’s because you never were worth saving and that’s why no one ever did and never will.

Came here from the movie Dope released in 2015, such a good song and movie. If your ever struggling wondering if you want to leave home, it may just be your heart wanting a better life for you. Leaving home won't change you for the better, I mean it could, but in the end it will only make you miss where you left from. Make sure you feel it in your heart before making a big decision like that. I learned the hard way by trying to start a better life across the country, but now I'm back home in LA California and now knowing where my heart is, I feel like I can take life on again.

@@MM-hq2bd What? He was only 21 when he wrote this and is not "speaking of his own struggle" at all. He was writing purely from observation and imagination, which makes him all the greater as a writer and artist. Gil didn't have drug problems until much later in life when he was in his 30s in the 1980s. This is from 1971 so it is not about himself and it is certainly not a "cry for help" either as the original comment suggested. "Most people don't realise he was singing about addiction" !!!!! What do most people think Gil meant by "kick it, quit it, kick it, quit it" ?? He did not suffer abuse at home either. Do any of you actually know anything about him? Apparently not so why are you writing all this bullshit?
