I don’t know how I got to 60 and never heard this piece until last night. I can’t stop listening! I love the simplicity of the right hand parts transformed into a masterpiece by the left hand chords and soulful melody. This bloke plays it so well!

"This bloke" is the famous Emil Gilels 😅. Magnificent playing indeed. Have a listen to the recording of Víkingur Ólafsson from his 2018 album "Johann Sebastian Bach". Clearly inspired by Gilels.

this particular voicing appears because his hands play what he (internally) sings and not vice versa. The hands follow his singing

God is this glorious!!!!! The public had no idea what hit them... they couldn't even clap or bravo properly. Gilels... was speaking from a place that had nothing to do with earth.

It's amazing how so few notes can be so beautiful. It seems like when there are less of them, each note has a greater responsibility to the piece. Wonderfully composed and played. The tempo is perfect.

Over the years I must have listened to this recording at least a dozen times and still it‘s not possible for me to start playing it and not feel goosebumps all over my body. Indescribable beauty.

Gilels played in Los Angeles ca. 1980. 2 separate recitals & I was lucky enough to see them. This was the Soviet era & there were 2 agents (KGB?) standing thruout the performance on stage & at the sides observing the audience. Being "live" sound, you can hear more nuance & sublety, of course, & Gilels had a way of making every single note sound special. He played this Bach for encore. He is one of the immortals & enriched the lives of his audiences.

Артур Рубинштейн однажды в интервью сказал: "...какие-то вещи мне нравятся в исполнении Горовица, какие-то -в исполнении Рихтера, какие-то Гульда, Микеланджели и т.д .Но мне нравится абсолютно всё в исполнении Гилельса." Это, пожалуй, единственное, в чём я равен Артуру Рубинштейну. Я гораздо моложе Гилельса, но успел застать его и бывать на его концертах. И чем дальше то время, когда творил Эмиль Гилельс, тем острее, отчётливее ощущаешь тот грандиозный маштаб этого дарования и то великое счастье быть свидетелем и слышать "вживую" этого гения.

It's amazing how a piece of music can toy with your heartstrings, uplifting you into an entirely different state and then letting you fall gently back into the world. Such a beautiful piece, quite sensually provoking.

Music expresses the ineffable. From the opening notes, this performance brings tears to my eyes and I feel transported almost to another world. It is impossible to explain to those who don't experience music in this way how it has such a profound and cathartic effect.

this is just amazingly played... he leads the line (so long one) in perfect way.... note a single note at a wrong level or at a wrong moment... every small inflection has an evident meaning... try to play it (it is very easy to "play") and you'll understand the genius of this simplicity....

@Salty fat Нет дорогой, не забыл. Я специально акцентировал внимание на утверждении " ни один ". Святослав Рихтер конечно же обладал большим талантом и превосходной техникой исполнения, как говорится которые рождаются " раз за 100 лет", но Э. Гилеллс помимо всего выше изложенного, не просто извлекал точнейший " золотой звук ", он придавал ему некоторую " духовность ", сильный эмоциональный фон, глубину чувств, энергию и многое другое... Возможно не каждый может это слышать, а главное чувствовать, но кто "слышет" тот поймёт меня. Обратите внимание как он глубоко чувствует музыку, которую играет, как пропускает её всю через себя! Поэтому его игра обладает таким магическим воздействием.

This is like floating over time. Observing all these geniuses offering their unique touch in this masterpiece. From Bach's original, to Siloti's (a student of Tchaikovsky and Liszt and teacher of Rachmaninoff) transcripiton. Through the fingertips of the great Emil Gilels. Every piece is connected.

Sometimes - rarely - we are lucky enough to be enchanted by a dimension full of beauty so glaring as warm. An "out of time" interpretation, like Lipatti's BWV 147: tears of beauty.

Sehr ergreifend - besonders im 2. Teil, in dem er die Melodie in der linken Hand so wunderbar singend und mit leichten agogischen Rückungen heraushebt - "er spannt den Bogen zum Himmel", wie eine Freundin von mir so schön sagte.

On paper the notes look so easy and simple ... until you start to play. Just to get this sound and mood. I also saw G. Sokolov playing this piece ... but Gilels' performance, by far, is unequaled. It's my absolute favourite piece ... thanks for posting it ...

@@florindacar8659 я знаю, дети Нейгауза. И он больше Рихтера привечал. Но личности то разные ! Гилельс теплый душой . А Рихтер все таки для меня холодноват.

@@florindacar8659 Насколько сейчас стало известно, ЭГ не слишком много почерпнул у Нейгауза, который очевидным образом недооценивал эту абсолютно гениальную личность и не увидел с первого раза будущий колоссальный её масштаб. А ведь был "гуру" фортепианной педагогики... Возможно (никто не знает и уже не узнает - можно только строить предположения), что он подсознательно не хотел признавать, что "просмотрел" уникального гения и всячески "доказывал" (в первую очередь, самому себе), что был в этом "прав". Главные учителя ЭГ были из Одессы (Рейнгбальд, Ткач). Кстати, есть воспоминания, что Гилельс даже где-то во второй половине 40-х более с Игумновым "работал"...
