I finally put my hands on a purpose built Barebow riser! The Gillo GT 27" ILF is quite the riser and has a lot of buzz about them. I get to give my honest feedback and impressions of this riser.
At the end of the video I stumble into an issue that I am working on solving with GILLO directly and will post a follow up video before I get into shooting the Gillo GT.

From the Manual Warning! Tightening too much the side grub screws may bring to difficulty in inserting and removing the limbs from the dovetails in the pockets. Vibrations during use may unlock th e side grub screws , if not locked with thread locker . Check them time by time.

I’m pretty sure there is a recommendation in the Gillo GT manual but for those who don’t like reading, you absolutely must use some type of thread lock tape or similar on the 4 outer small grub screws that keep the limb alignment screws tight or you will lose them. I have the GT25 ILF and I didn’t read the manual in full until after I had one grub screw loosen and fall out within the first 50 shots. I was just lucky I was shooting indoors on wooden floorboards and heard the screw hit the ground. I’ve had no sticking issues with Uukha limbs and I liken the feel of the riser to that of texture of chalk!

Dear Jake, first of all, thanks for your work. I own a GILLO GT and UuKa limbs and I was experiencing as well the problem of removing the limbs luckily I found a solution, or better to say something that is working for me when removing the limbs I apply a small push to limbs the same direction the string does when shooting, as soon as the limb is not in contact with load screw the limb can be relatively easily be removed. My apologies for the usage of the English language but I hope you and whoever is reading can understand. Ciao

Prefix Edit: I should say that the limb pocket design on the GT is the best that I have seen for allowing the maximum adjustment. This is a game changer for recurve shooters. Well-done GILLO. The way I got around tightening the locking grub screw is to insert the limb half way, until the metal of the limb is just in the brass slot, then tighten the locking grub screw. I can then insert and remove the limbs completely (although it is a snug fit) and the locking screws have stayed tight. Another limb fit issue I have with my 25" GT. After some shooting my Limbs have chipped the surface from contact with the limb bolt. Have a look on the underside of the limb bolt head where it has a fillet between the shaft and head. For a snug fit on the limb dovetail on the bolt that fillet will create a small chip on the surface of the limb. All my other risers (Hoyt, Win&Win, MK) have no (or very little fillet) under the limb bolt.

Jake, I've also experienced this limb issue. As mentioned below it's to do with the adjustment screws. In my experience the first set aren't supposed to be very tight. It's the locking screws that are supposed to be tighter. It's also a good idea to periodically check that the lock screws are tight or maybe use medium thread lock. I'm going to test run this riser for a recurve set up as I like the huge limb weight adjustment, and of course the build quality. Paul from Jäger also makes my favourite grip for them too.

I had the same issue when removing limbs and I've heard others do too. I'm now shooting the new C88's on mine and there is no problem anymore. It seems the GT was made with them in mind. They're a little narrower than a lot of other ILF limbs.

As far as limbs getting stuck, this is a normal situation if users don't strictly follow instructions on manual to lock the grub screws after alignment. You should never "tighten" the opposite grub screw of the last one used for alignment. Just let it touch the aligning plate inside, and then lock it by the second grub screw on the same side. Our align system is among the most precise in the market, and we have no intention to lose its tolerances just to allow uncontrolled tightening of the side grub screws. The system is the same for all our risers and perfectly working for 6 years already and several thousands of risers provided that users follow instructions

Yep, my G1 has very finicky limb adjustment. Tight is too much (stuck limbs). I carefully back off the grub screws just until the limbs pop in and out then finish with the outer locking screws. Once again, not too tight. Insurance with Vibra-Tite removable thread locker. It feels like the dove-tail is soft and the grub screws compress it, grabbing the limbs. Really looking forward to Part II!

I have mxt gf limbs. I tried to pair them with my titan ex riser from fivics but experienced the same issue as Jake. From that experience I think that it is due to the fact that those pin like things on win win limbs that clip in are longer that other limbs so that causes the limb to get stuck. I had to file those pins down to fit them in.

Jake? Can you do an episode to address a stuck-limb-in-ilf-pocket? Ideas, cures (If any) that may not need to require a disassembly of my PSE ILF setup. I was almost ready tie it to my roommate's bf's 4wheel drive and the other end to the house and have him pull it apart when it finally let go. I had one grub screw out, all other limb bolts out. I have had this before, but it is frustrating. I could hang it up by it's holes on dowels and swing from the limb like Jane of the Jungle and it won't come loose. The other limb, no problem. just the one. Maybe your opinion to polish the inside of the dovetail maybe? I have access to a dremel tool. Make it mirror inside the dovetail? or some olive oil out of the kitchen? or spray-on arrow release? Replace with a Hoyt or Gillo riser? Just an idea for an episode. I have noted there seems to be a LOT of people with the issue. Thanks, ~G~

@@toxic5000 Pivot pocket design makes it unique. ILF in its basic configuration is very limited on adjustment department. Even when your tiller bolt has 15 (as in Nano Max) revolution travel it is limited to 4-6 revs because how pocket dovetail and limb dovetail bolt interacts with each other. It works good only on limited angle. To steep angle will cause dovetail bolt to be pushed out from pocket and/or wear or even destroy dovetail pocket. In Gillo GT limb to pocket is in fixed position and whole pocket is turning instead.

So I was in one of Jake's coach videos he did a few last week. I have a Gillo GT 27" and I use Win & Win NS-G medium limbs. When saw this video I had to run downstairs and double check my riser to see why my riser didn't have Jake's issues. I mean the NS-Gs are pretty much the same limbs, but on inspection I don't have these issues. Phew! I find it very strange as the Gillo I have is made very well. I'm curious to hear what the cause is and what the fix will be. Edit: I've not adjusted the limb pockets so that is probably why I don't have any sticking issues.

Limb fitting seems to be the weak spot of Gillo. Mine did the same. On top of that my G2 had two different Limb Bolts fitted, one of them didn´t fit my Limbs, and one of the conical locking screws was damaged. I have it working and like to shoot it but the Riser I will buy for the upcoming indoor season will be a different Brand.

I got one in formula, and paired it with my long Hoyt Velos limbs. The 'alleged' 72" string I bought with it (and side by side it is definitely longer than my 70" strings) is too short. Gillo recommends 9.5-10" and this string won't allow a brace height under 10.75, and that's completely unwound.

I just received my 19" GT riser. one of the first things I did was check the limb alignment and with my uukha's it was perfectly set. double checked that the grub screws were in tight (they were) so I haven't touched it since I got it. One question I do have though, when changing the draw weight/tiller, you have to loosen the bolts on the side to make the black limb pockets movable (marked as 4mm in manual). for some reason, no matter how tight I go, these remain somewhat movable (not loose enough to move by gravity, but you can push them by hand). I'm curious if other users have the same thing. Not to worried though since the limbs under tension will essentially force the pocket to become perpendicular to the limb bolt. oh and for those who are rounding the heads of bolts, double check that the bolt is not using metric rather than than the usual imperial. Gillo seem to be using metric for their adjustments.

What is the point to a 27" riser? I did catch your comment about preferring the sight window real estate. I would like to know whether there is a size of athlete reason to own a 27" riser. I have only owned 25" risers, and they seem OK. But I an 6' 1" tall, and I have a wingspan of 6' 3" so I have shorter legs, larger torso. But not all that large. Just received my GT 29 on Thursday and took about 50 shots last night, checked my limb pocket grub screws this morning and one was a few turns away from falling out. My riser was missing one of the screws that hold the beautiful grip on and I just replaced that with a screw from one of the packets Gillo provides. My WNS Motive C5 long limbs have no problem being inserted and removed from the pockets. On page 5 of the manual, highlighted in yellow, it does say “Vibrations during use may unlock the side grub screws, if not locked with thread locker. Check them time to time”. It sounds like using Loctite removable blue 242 thread locker on these grub screws is the simple solution to all of this. Is using removable Loctite the answer to the grub screws coming loose?

For me "forward" is the direction where the arrow flies. But according to the numbers given the plunger is closer to the string (22.5cm, which in my picture is "behind") than the pivot point of the grip (22.8cm). Wouldn't this mean the button is behind the pivot point, not in front? I can hardly await the next part as I'm considering buying a GT myself.

I use the lower stabilizer bushing as a reference on all Gillo bows for this reason.... the riser may be "straight or aligned" but when you add limbs they have interfacing tolerances that must be compensated with the alignment blocks. They exist to allow adjustments and every other bow on the market doesn't lock your limbs into the pocket when adjustments are made, even when done improperly. I wanted to really like the bow as the Frangilli's are excellent people.

@@timh9246 How are you meant to align your limbs if you can't tighten the grub screws down before taking the limbs out? If you threadlock the screws in while the bow is strung, how do you know if they are too tight to remove the limbs? Such an impractical design cannot be a feature, and very much looks like a design flaw.
@timh9246
@timh9246 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand the point you are trying to make. It is very simple really - thread locker is used for this in the same way it is used in countless mechanical thread applications. Apply thread lock, place the screw/bolt in the required position, and allow time to set. In fact, applied logic will indicate that in this application , thread lock would ony really be required on the outer locking grub screw, as it is impossible for the inner screw to move, if correctly secured between the alignment plate and the outer (locked) locking screw. Also, typical low or medium strength liquid thread lock (such as Loctite 222 and 243) is not like superglue - it does not set in minutes, it takes hours, so there is plenty of time to adjust thread position as required. And it can be broken with normal hand tools when set.
@timh9246
@timh9246 4 жыл бұрын
So in short, simply apply thread locker, adjust the alignment screws as necessary, and check the limbs won't move laterally but can be removed from the pocket. And even if the thread locker has set, provided that the user has enough sense and knowledge to use low or medium strength ones, the grub screws are very easily removed and adjusted still with normal hand tools, i.e. a correct size allen key.

@@timh9246 Yes, thanks for that, I know how threadlock works. I'm saying it looks like if the screws are not tight there is play in the brass plate, but if they are tight he can't remove the limbs. If you threadlock the screws in while the bow is strung and aligned, how do you know if they are in too tight? If you take the limbs out to threadlock, how do you know if they are aligned as there is movement in the plate? Every other manufacturer has designed a system that is intuitive and doesn't require buying another product to complete set up. I've not seen the system, maybe Jake's is defective.. But from other commenters on the video saying they/others at their club had the same problem, it looks like a design flaw to me.

The limbs getting stuck is a common Gillo riser problem

I wanted to buy a Gillo, or a Spigarelli, however both manufacturers consider left handed archers as not worth catering to. Most of their models don't have a left handed version, or only available in two or three colors, & needed to be custom ordered from the manufacturer. Hoyt Xceed was available in left hand in every color, with every major supplier having stock & competitive pricing. No brainier really.
