Gimp 2.8.22 standard - Windows 10
👉👉👉 IMPORTANT NOTE FOR GIMP 2.10 USERS: 👈👈👈
01.12 - Blend tool is Gradient tool.
01.18 - Use Ctrl+Z to make a new gradient.
04.38 - Free select tool: hit enter to close the selection.
08.05 - Use the lagacy dropshadow, that is the one without the G in front of it..
12.47 - Lightning effect; move by click and drag the lightsource.
13.16 - Adjust the super nova value to your liking.
Click on the CC button at the bottom of the video for English subtitles. Or click on ⚙️ settings, subtitles, auto-translate, choose your language. Sorry for my 'home made' English 😉

What a professionalism! What a warm and calm and relaxing voice! Please don't stop making those tutorials. I remember another channel whose owner has the same voice and professionalism of yours, he stopped making Gimp tutorials in favour to Blenders ones. Keep making them, please!

Hi Dimitri. I guess you removed the question about feathering? In the menubar, select and then feather. But the effect is different from smudging, as you already said. Best, Jan. GW.

I was looking for something like photoshop selection editing tool but found all the options I needed very shortly after asking the question. Thanks for info anyhow. Gimp is a lot more awesome than I thought it would be. Makes me cringe to think about all the money I've wasted on Adobe that I could have donated to these open source gems.

Although (the expensive 😕 ) Photoshop does have some more advanced options, I too think that Gimp is really great free software. My tutorials are made with the standard options in Gimp, but as you probably know, there are a lot of nice plug-ins available. Thanks, Dimitri, for replying and have a nice day! 😃

Dear Jan! Again, a fantastic tutorial. Unimaginable which possibilities are hidden in such a photo editing program. And then for free too! Just like your instructive tutorials. Without these free tools, we are dependent on those expensive professional photo shoppers. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and fantasies with us! I am already looking forward to the next tutorial ... are you going to surpass yourself? :-) Can you tell me when to use a mask and what you can do with it?

Hey Barth! Thank you for posting such a encouraging comment. Indeed, Gimp with all its possibilities is really great and ... for free haha. I hope to make more tuts ofcourse and I hope they bring a bit joy now and then ;-) Layer mask are basically a way to selectively and non-destructively modify the opacity (transparency) of the layer they belong to. What a great tutorial with an amazing outcome. I have a query that I hope you can help me with if you don't mind.When I add the images to the workspace I can not get the thumbnail pictures that appear at the top of your tutorial video. They appear in the layer section on the right- hand side. Was thinking perhaps I need a plugin. I am using the Gimp 2.8.10 version. Thanks again for this new addition to your amazing tutorials. Hi Maurice, thanks for your great comment! I work with Gimp 2.8.22 version, (without plugins) but I don't know if that's the problem to be honoust. Is there an option for single-window-mode in the 10 version? That might be the problem. Or maybe you can just open the images separately as separate images and apply copy and paste. I am not sure if any of this helps... sorry! Please let me know how you solved it ;-) Best, Jan.

At 8:16 we are to activate the drop shadow layer but I don't have one and I went back in the video several times to see if I missed something and I just don't see where the drop shadow layer was made. Could you help me with that please? I am using Gimp 2.10 if that makes any difference.

Hi Norfolk SDA Church. Sorry about that. I have made notes for 2.10 users, but I failed to mention, that one should use the legacy dropshadow, that is the one without the G in front of it. Hi Jan! I`m trying to do the same with my 3 images. Something goes wrong already in beginning (0:45 s your video). You inform to drag and move the background thumbnail on top of the foreground thumbnail. In your video two background thumbnails appear. I keep having the two different thumbnails. Also only foreground thumbnail appears on the right (in toolbox). And finally I´m not able to blend foreground and background images ..... Any idea what I+´m doing wrong?

Hi Lasse Venho 😉 Sorry to hear that you are having trouble... It's hard from here, to see exactly what goes wrong, but we will try 😃. First of all, when you are not in Gimp 2.8.22, but have a more recent version, you should read the notes in the video description. The next thing is that you should have 4 images, not 3... 1:The sand which I call the foreground image, 2:The wood, which I call the background image, 3: The wolf and 4:The girl. Keep in mind that when you click and drag the background image via the thumbnial of the foreground image, into the foreground image, to hold the left mouse button dwon until you are in the actual image. When you click and drag the background image via the foreground image into the image, you still have 4 thumbnails, but the first two are identical. In the layers panel (not the toolbox) the layer with the background image should be above the layer with the foreground image. When you have Gimp 2.10, there is no more blend tool, it's now called gradient. And as a general guide, one should always be very precise when following the tutorial, because 1 wrong click can mess it all up... Furter more it's important to check if you have the same settings as in the tutorial, also the ones that are not mentioned. I hope you find in here somewhere the solution for you problem. hi jan,i find since i downloaded 2.10,its not the same as 2.8 as most filters dont match up,is there a way that i can have both on my pc.as i'm very new to GIMP and alot of your tutorials are in 2.8 ,when i downloaded 2.10 it replaced my 2.8.

Hey Jackie. They are definitly different in a lot of respects. I have however checked all my tutorials that are made with 2.8 and made notes in the video description how to make the older ones in 2.10. Almost all of the 2.8 tuts can be made with 2.10., just check the notes. On your other question: I have 2.10 on my pc and 2.8 on a external hard drive and that works for me. Maybe one can have both on one pc, but I would not know how to do that. Hope this helps! I am working on the PDF's 😋

hi jan,i have a few hours of work today and i come home to do this tutorial,i'm find until i come to wolf,i use the free select tool and join the dots,but cant do anything else i click to close the selection and get a yellow dot to close but all i get is straight lines,in the select menu both feather and none are unhighlighted,so can't continue..will i go back to work lol.

Hey there Jackie Connell 😃 I am not sure what goes wrong there. When you click to merge the yellow dots, there should appear a 'marching ant line', to indicate that you have a selection. Then you can feather and so on. You can also just hit enter when you hover the last node over the first one. (You'r still on 2.8 I guess) For 2.10 there are some notes in the video description. Hope this helps, glad you can laught about it 😂

i did try to bring in another object to test but still the same no on 2.10.most things in the select menu are off ,maybe i will download it again.thanks.scissors is only tool that will complete

When most of the options in the select menu are gray, there is just no selection yet. Before downloading Gimp again, maybe first try to make a selection in a completely different, newly opened image... That is, not with the fantasy II project opened. Good luck, please let me know ... 😃

In het begin maakte ik de tutorials zowel in het Nederlands als in het Engels, maar er was bijna geen Nederlandstalige belangstelling en... het was wel heeeeel veeeel werk haha. 😂 Dus vandaar toch maar voor Engels gekozen. Hoi Dank voor uw antwoord kan het best begrijpen dat het in het Engels meer aanslaat, MAAR ik heb hier een BELGISCHE groep die GIMP gebruikt. Zijn grote voorstanders en hebben een gezellige werkgroep. Maar geen Probleem hoor wij hopen alleen dat je verder blijft doen en laten het wel vertalen door de jongelui is goed dan weer vor hun Engels om bij te schaven. Nogmaals dan voor uw tuts

Helemaal oké hoor Jos. ❗️❗️ Leuk dat jullie een Gimp groep hebben. Ik had/heb deze maand een soort van aanbieding over de teksten uit de tutorials: In ruil voor een 'Coffee forJan' donatie, voor elke euro een 1 hard copy PDF bestand van de gesproken tekst (Engels uiteraard) van video's naar keuze. Ik heb hier positieve reacties over gekregen want ze zijn behulpzaam bij het maken (of evt. vertalen van de tekst) van de tutorial. Kijk maar. In ieder geval veel plezier met Gimp en de tutorials.
