Way back in those days, they all did. Even the ones from up north with their heavy accents too. And they all changed their names too back then. It's so different now, you can stay being yourself nowadays.

Ginger Rogers is a distant cousin on my mother's father's side. Her real name is Virginia McMath. She got her stage first name "Ginger" from her younger cousin not being able to say "Virginia" correctly and making it sound like "Ginga" and her stage last name from her stepfather's last name. Found out that she was in our family bible years ago and my aunt told me about her and I thought "well, thats awesome. Guess it runs in the family." Proceed to google her and it went on from there. She was/is so talented.

Katie couric saying ‘While so many Americans where in the bread line, Ginger was leading the chorus line’ is extremely harsh...the Great Depression and suffering wasn’t a choice like singing/dancing was 😔

@carolyn thompson I don't know much about Katie Couric but I thought she did a very polite and reasonably searching interview with Ginger. Couric certainly didn't open up lines of questioning about politics. One of my favourite interviews is the one that Ginger took part in with Joan Rivers. The two women seemed to get on very well despite Joan veering into matters concerning Ginger's private life. Ginger didn't speak about that kind of thing and that is much to her credit. I think Ginger has been very kind to her ex-husbands when she has briefly spoken about them (notably in her autobiography) as all of them seemed to have treated her quite shoddily.

It was really interesting to see her development as a dancer...although she was proficient right from the start. Her performances in "Carefree" are an absolute tour de force and you can see how she honed her skills over the years. In saying that I really love her early stuff and the freedom of the Carioca in Flying Down to Rio and cheekiness of "I'd Be Hard to Handle" (the tap routine) in Roberta.

Absolutely. She made it clear that it was not going to be one of those "tell all" tales where she had a go at others....she did tell it as it was, though. The incident with Katherine Hepburn and the water on the fur coat....I liked the book and I admire her. She and I may have disagreed on a few lifestyle type matters but I very much admired her talent and her work ethic - always have. @@eugenekozma2697

@TellyWatcher1997

I don't think she did, you know. Some of Ginger's early work in Hollywood was pre-Hays Code and yet she still managed not to get involved with the near nudity of some of Buzz's staging. Ginger's mother was very particular about the kind of thing she did and guided her wisely.

In one of her first musicals, 42nd Street, she played Ann Lowell, a chorus girl who was known as "Anytime Annie." ("She only said 'no' once, and that time she didn't understand the question.")

@@ctruth6185 GR "let herself go" from a medical standpoint. She was devoted to her Christian Science faith and reportedly never saw a doctor or sought medical treatment. Chances are her quality of life would have improved and perhaps lived longer with proper medical attention. Her fans wanted nothing but the best for her.

@@tbec3011 - She said of dancing and I paraphrase, "I never gave up on dancing; it seemed to give up on me". That was incredibly sad. I believe that she was a wheelchair user in later life. It must have been incredibly frustrating for someone who had danced on air with Astaire. I love watching her dance numbers on YT, hope they last as long as people take an interest in dance.
