On my #sewingvlog today: #howtosew ribbing cuffs and a hem band to the hoodie on an overlocker. I'll also show you how I match stripes on my cuffing - without pinning or basting. I am using Tilly and the Buttons Stella hoodie - I have modified the pattern to add different pockets, cuffs and the bottom band, but you can use any hoodie/ sweatshirt/jumper pattern you want.
The pattern is from the book 'Stretch' shop.tillyandt...
My fabric (French terry) is from fabricshop.pl/k...
The ribbing is from miekkie.com - you ca buy it in the UK from Pin and Sew
I use Juki MO 6714D overlocker and I got mine from Frankilns Group in the UK

You can sew ribbing on your domestic sewing machine using a stretch stitch. I just happen to be a machines addict 🤣

I'm actually glad you said it 🤣 I'm trying to go slow and explain stuff as I go, but the reality is that I sew in a weird way, my cutting out is even worse (I can actually cut my toes with my rotary cutter 🤣) but then, that's me and it would be pointless to try and pretend that I'm something else. But there's a method in this madness, I swear (I research and try to copy industrial techniques to accelerate the process of learning. I never do things which I don't understand. I always ask myself 'what's the practical application of this step' and so on 🤣🤣🤣). This overlocker has a lot of safety features, too 😉

Love the hoodie - great colour on you! I use a bit of washable wondertape on stripes or colour blocking to hold the fabric stable prior to sewing/overlooking. That works for me ❤️

Thank you Lynne ♥️ I use various things if I want to stabilise the seams but I never do it for French terry 😉 just a personal preference I think (the seams are stable enough )- but I actually add my tape (or clear elastic) as I sew...there's a special overlocker foot for that and I think I might 'need' it 🤣🤣🤣(I love my toys!)

When you say that the cuffs are 30% shorter than the opening of the sleeve, do you mean 70% PLUS seam allowance? Or just measure 70% and then sew the seam allowance with what you have?
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 4 жыл бұрын
The seam allowance of the side seam of the sleeve and the side seam of the ribbing is the same (6 millimeters in my case) so it doesn't matter. Also, the ribbing has good recovery so it will look equally good when it's 20% shorter than the opening and 30 or more % shorter than the corresponding opening. It's the beauty of ribbing, you can make it as tight as you like.

I have a Stella hoodie I made earlier in the year which I am finding too A line and loose at the bottom. I was going to add a bottom band in self fabric to match the cuffs. Would you recommend the bottom band is sized 30% less, as you have done with your ribbing? It is a fleece backed sweatshirting. I really love the colours in your hoodie, green is my favourite 💚😊
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 4 жыл бұрын
I would make it 20% smaller (or even 15% if your fabric is not very stretchy). Ribbing has a really amazing recovery and it can stretch a lot (especially if it has some spandex, but even the 100% cotton ones stretch well because of the way they are made - the ribbs, that is). This also means that it's a bit more forgiving if you don't distribute/ease in your fabric perfectly. If I make bands out of the same fabric as my garment I tend to make the band about 80% of the opening and sew the loop, check if it stretches enough as I place it inside my opening and then sew (you can pin it - I don't pin because I've never learnt how to pin, you can also baste if you are worried that it might not work) 😊 x

Thanks so much Alex, can I ask, would you do 70% less if you were doing a self fabric cuff (if you ever do such a cuff)? ps another great episode, and I love the hoodies. Love the new overlocker you lucky lady.
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 4 жыл бұрын
I would do a longer band if using self fabric, usually either 80% or 85% of the length of the neckline or the bottom of the sleeve. So, if you're not sure, cut the band to be 15% shorter than the opening (and make sure you don't stretch the neckline when you measure, use a flexible measuring tape 😊). If the neckband (or cuff) is not stretched enough as you pin it (or clip it), cut off another 5%. The ribbing I use is very stretchy and has great recovery but even very stretchy fabric when used for the bands would need to be longer. Also, I like my bottom bands to be quite tight but it's very 80s 🤣 most people prefer a bit looser hem bands 😉 x

Are the leg bands 30% shorter as well as the bottom leg circumference?
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 3 жыл бұрын
No, the cuffs on trousers are always wider but there’s no hard and fast rule, it depends on the style and personal preferences (at the moment most templates for cuffs for sleeves and neckbands are usually between 20 and 15% shorter than the corresponding opening, the cuffs on trousers are usually just 10% shorter than the leg openings- which is always too loose for my personal preference but might be perfect for you) I tend to make my leg cuffs about 15 to 20% shorter (if I use ribbing, the rules will be different for self fabric) but only 15 to 10 % shorter if I make it for other people. Trends in leisurewear also change - things are more relaxed at the moment but when you sew you can decide for yourself. The only thing to remember is that the shorter the band the more easing in/ gathering in the garment itself - that might determine your choice 😊

@@GingerheadCo Thank you so much for your advice. It is very helpful as I am making stretch trouser for my husband and he would like them altered to have ribbing on legs.
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 3 жыл бұрын
@@cfleyfel855 I make them wider for my husband (he’s precisely opposite to me and he likes everything loose) so if the legs are not very wide I only make the ribbing 10% shorter, then the joggers are not gathered but tapered. I really need to make a more detailed video about it, this one is a bit too general 😊

Did/do you pre-wash your ribbing/cuffing, please? x
@GingerheadCo
@GingerheadCo 4 жыл бұрын
Always if it's something I don't know (more because I'm worried that the colour might run out than anything else) - but I don't when I use my favourite ones (like the ones from Miekkie shop) Before you pre-wash any ribbing, make sure the edges are finished (it will unravel when it's not finished) - it's also best to check a small sample first if possible. It actually doesn't matter if it shrinks a bit - that's why I prefer NOT to pre-wash my favourite ones (but they are really good quality and I have used them lots, so I'm not worried about accidentally dying my garment) x
