That's the kind of witty comeback I'd like to think of IRL, haha. I've heard way too many people say things are wrong for being "unnatural", and vice-versa. But my character at the moment being a druid who serves the god of death, I had to come up with a different response.
@Keyce0013
@Keyce0013 2 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't a druid find everything to be natural since everything comes from nature? Why do we only classify certain human-made constructs (such as log housing) to be unnatural when animals like beavers and birds do similar things to different objects and achieve similar results?

"I can garuntee you have at least a dozen of my scrolls in here..." "Do you know your alphabet, in order?" "Do you mean common? Dovahzhul (this world's draconic)? Dwarvish? Elven? Sylvain? Infernal? Enochian (angelic)? I'm only really fluent in a few but I'm familiar with each of them." "Are you comfortable around the dead?" "I spent a week in hell, I wouldn't say I'm comfortable but I can deal with a few corpses." "Have you seen someone resurrected?" I decided to try this one as the scholarly wizard I'm developing. I figure she applied for the position in hopes of gaining experience or maybe for extra credit. I will say, responding as a fellow scholar certainly makes Nymwen seem even more condescending and dismissive... Me: "Yes, I can read and write... in several different languages, in fact!" Nym: *sigh* "I'll draw up a map to aid you..." Me: "I'm very familiar with books and scholarly texts, I use them every day in my college courses. I find Nym more disconcerting than some of the more openly murderous Ginnyverse characters. I mean, you know where you stand with a mermaid. (On dry land, far from shore.) And Na'Krasha's probably the worst babysitter. But Nymwen's got an obsession and if she needed a humanoid heart, I feel like she'd probably, I dunno, hire a hopeful research assistant and get a bit of work out of them while having spent the payroll on a cursed scroll of desired heart, labelled as heart's desire. Just tell the poor victim "Now, this is a secret, and these don't keep, and it's one to a user. Bit of a divination, shows you your heart...'s desire. Anyway, it'll fall to dust by daybreak and there's an empty study room... Wouldn't you like to know what's really in your heart?" But maybe that's just my experience with creepers.

When settling on her alignment for her World Anvil page, the only one that makes sense to me is True Neutral! She will do whatever the hell she wants, no matter the impact, positive or negative, that it will have on anyone else. And yeah, that's super scary!!
@probablythedm1669

@@GinnyDi I could be wrong, but that sounds texbook neutral evil too me. 🤔 "Neutral evil (NE) is the alignment of those who do whatever they can get away with, without compassion or qualms." So, I suppose she still cares a little about others? Is she the type willing to buy from questionable sources, but only if it might be stolen, not if someone was killed for the goods? The kind to hire a thief, but not an assassin? Or is she willing to actually get her assisstant killed for her own gain? Because if she is willing to step over innocent corpses, she's delightfully neutral evil. The scariest alignment. :)

@@GinnyDi I'm sorry! I am well aware you know her best! It's why I prefaced my questions with "I could be wrong", since I probaly would be when questioning if she leaned more towards evil. I could probaly have been clearer about that. You have my most sincere apologies if my questions caused any offense! I was just genuinely curious how willing to use questionable means she is, should I use her as an NPC. Your answer does confirm a "get me this book, but don't make a mess"-kind of character and not a "get me this book, no questions asked"-kind of character, and not "I'd knowingly use my assistant as a consumable material components for a spell" but definitely a "I pay my assistant to do the dangerous part"-approach to her goals. I find alignment is difficult to talk and ask character specific questions about without it sounding like you're questioning the persons perception of their character. It's why I tried to provide examples with the thief vs. assassin. Again, I was just curious for clarification on your view of her since that determines what she might ask players to do and what means she'd accept. I apologize again if it came across some other way, as that was not my intention. 😔

@GinnyDi 2 жыл бұрын
To be totally honest with you, I find alignment to be a really restrictive system and I don't like it. I use it on World Anvil because people ask about character alignment (for those who like the system, I see how it could be useful when trying to bring a character into a game) but I would always rather pick my character's actions based on my full understanding of their mindset and motivations rather than trying to fit them onto a little 3x3 grid. Would Nymwen be upset if someone got killed in the process of obtaining a book? Probably only if it inconvenienced her in some way. Does that make her evil? I think everybody is going to interpret that differently. I'm not really interested in nitpicking alignment because frankly I don't really care about it 😅

Nymwen: Do you know your letters, in order, so that you can find titles? Hieronymus, elven wizard and published historian: … I am certain I will figure it out. Honestly, I think he’s feeling a little bit amused by her, and a little bit pitying. He’s with her on the poetry and romance (reason for becoming an adventurer: fell in love with an assassin), has no theological standpoint on necromancy whatsoever, and recognises that the condescension has very little to do with him at all and an awful lot to do with her own little world that she lives in in her head, so he’s not offended by her. But honestly he thinks she’s more than a little bit silly, and far too blindly trusting in the knowledge and honesty of the written word (and people in general, maybe finish the interview and have a trial period before you start babbling about your necromantic projects with the first idiot you meet). Also, he will keep mum right up until she murders someone or raises an undead monstrosity as her romantic partner, and then he will reluctantly probably have to sort that out. Until then, though, he’ll happily help her out in return for library access and something to do while in the city.

Man I loved this conversation for my Orc wizard(Odin Silver-flower).He’s pretty used to people back handedly insulting his intelligence so her ego doesn’t really effect him(I personally head-canon this conversation taking place in Elvish since his adoptive fathers a high elf and he hasn’t used it in conversation since he left his village and likely would want to brush up)will take any opportunity to talk about magic,spells,poetry and make a dad joke with his spell book(order of scribes).He sees knowledge as a human right(often hoarded by the rich)but also believes there’s a difference between acknowledging explosives,saying what they look like,and how they hurt people and leavening out bomb semantics.His blood runs cold when she starts talking about necromancy,he sees the act of it as a perversion of magic and a degradation of both the living and dead,but he also has strong paternal instincts(daughter at home)and prefers to avoid combat,so the rest of the conversation is Odin trying to make points against what she’s doing(corpses brought back through non divine magic always lose something)and then putting the pieces together,the difference between love and infatuation(something else he strongly believes in given the poetry he still writes to his wife back home).He left feeling extremely worried.

This ended up being perfect for my Dhampir Grave Cleric, Ezekiel. Wow. That was such an interesting exchange! I'm currently playing as Cass, a druid from the coast (with 1 level of grave domain cleric) who happens to serve the Raven Queen. She's an anthropologist more than a century older than Nymwen, though it may be hard to tell a sea elf's age at a glance, and she was therefore quite annoyed by the mage's pretentiousness. Cass views resurrection against the will of the deceased as the most immoral act one could ever commit, and is likely the last person Nymwen should be having this conversation with for her sake 😁

this was good, It made me ask a profound question about one of my scholarly characters in D&D. I also found it quite amusing and fitting despite his level of expertise he was spoken to rather condescendingly as his charisma is 3.

Roleplaying this one as my hexblade was fun because it tapped into two minor traits of hers: she used to be an aspiring scholar/historian, and she absolutely loathes poetry. Her romantic history begins and ends with one person she used to work with who kept trying to win her over with amateur poetry (and I'm the one writing it, for authenticity) no matter how many times she said she didn't like them. This roleplay pushed every single one of her buttons and it was beautiful

I learned today just how much my pixie druid will put up with. The answer: she was done dealing with Nymwen by the what's on your hands question. This is such a fun series and I love using it to flesh out my characters, most times it ends with just a fun character interaction, sometimes the interaction goes south before the first question. Thank you Ginny Di for these awesome videos!

This character is so cool. I wouldn’t help her if I knew what she was doing but yet, her motivation is so strong and understandable though! Ugh. And my bard I’m playing also wants to resurrect her lover, but hates necromancy because it was a lich that killed her fiancé. ( she still thinks resurrection isn’t necromancy but conjuration. As your conjuring the soul back into the body

Conjuration* Conjugation has to do with conjugating words. Though I guess that could fit too in a flavor specific way :P :D

The first prompt was so funny. My current character is a barbarian who gets covered in enemy blood every fight and has on many occasions answered, "Oh, it's blood. Don't worry; it's not mine." So I habitually responded with that line.

I actually ran this with the 5 year old version of one of my shadow sorcerers. I always pictured her apprenticing to necromancers at a young age, and it was really funny having Nymwen asking a 5 year old about love and poetry. I decided to make the conversation part of her official backstory because I just thought it was too funny.

Paprika Pumpkin, Leshy Witch (Leshies being a race of incorporeal spirits created from congealed magic puppetting plants to interact with the material realm; and witches being like Pathfinder's equivalent of warlocks, with a focus on having a familiar act as the messenger between them, as well as a living spellbook.) Paprika's patron is her "grandmother," a Grand Leshy named Granny Wildwood, who acts as an adoptive mother figure. Paprika's familiar is her older brother, Peter. Nemwyn: Do you know your letters? In order? So that you can find titles? They're organized by alphabet within each area. Paprika: ABDCEFGIHJK- Peter: That's not the alphabet, and you know it. Nemwyn: What is your overall experience with books and other scholarly writings? Peter: I handle all of those. Paprika gets bored of them quickly. As with most things... Nemwyn: Are you yourself a spellcaster of any kind? Have you ever used a scroll? Paprika: HOO BOY, AM I! I'm the apprentice of the one and only Wildwood Pumpkin! Nemwyn: Have you ever seen someone raised from the dead? Paprika: Oh, of course I have! Like Peter! He dies a lot, but I always resurrect him by the next morning. Peter: I have become friends with Mortept... We play cards as we wait. (Editor's note: Mortept is the God of Psychopomps in my campaign setting, and is the closest thing my setting has to Death) Nemwyn: What do they look like? Do you see the magic radiate off of them? Do they appear as a normal living person again? Peter: I am right here! Nemwyn: Do you think revivification unnatural? Paprika: Pbbbt, nah! Like I said, I resurrect Peter all the time! Peter: I! AM! RIGHT! HERE!

Normally I don't have any character in mind while watching, but this one actually made me laugh just because my most recent character was a disgraced wizard archaeologist. He'd be standing there, thinking how if he didn't need to keep up the act, he'd say so much about his own academic expertise and the fickleness of romance.

My writer: "Whats that on your hands?" - Ink. Something wrong with that? "Do you promise not to speak of my work?" - Only if you let me in on all of your secrets. Being honest, if you deny it I'll just sneak in your room and find out about it myself. Don't worry, I can keep secrets well. "You're not curious, are you?" - Heh, I'm the most curious person you'll ever meet! Tell me, do you have a diary(that I can read when you're not looking)? "Whats your experience with books?" - I've read alot of them, I wrote my own. Have you ever read any of my articles? I write about murder, and of course I write about adventure! "Have you seen someone raised from the dead?" - Yes, it was exciting! The rotting away of the flesh, the worms eating away at the reanimated corpse... My party was surprised I wasn't affected by that sight at all. "I love romantic stories." - Ugh, you sound just like my rival, and here I thought I was talking to someone interesting. Love is disgusting. "Have you ever encountered a text that made you feel like you deeply understood a person?" - I suppose so. "Have you ever been in love?" - None of your business. "An ancient tome made of flesh..." - How interesting, I wonder why it's forbidden!!! (I'll read in it when you turn around.)

I love doing your POV videos but my current character is an angsty 12 year old who doesn’t open up to people, so he hasn’t meshed with most of these videos, but this one was fabulous, I’m actually shocked how much my character opened up in conversation. I think my Bard by trade, Warlock by class, necromancy practicing, recently risen as a vampire might by a somewhat good fit for the job... Although she might display a bit too much curiosity. Or end up being a test subject, rather than an assistant. Do you get paid more if you do that too? Either way, it would be a good distraction from not being able to get drunk anymore.

Considering Keiron, my Hexblood Blood Hunter just took their second level of Bladesinger wizard yesterday, as a way to expand their spell pool and be able to boost their AC, I may have to retake this for them, in addition to Mr. Walters, the valet (courtier & monk) I had started out with. The thought of a 14th level character being treated like a rank amateur just because she's seen that their spellbook only has a handful of level 1 spells in it amuses me immensely. (Profane Soul, Archfey patron, so they have other spells of higher level, those spells are just... in their head, not in the book).

Omg this went incredibly well with my wood elf wizard. He used to work at an institution for people who practice frowned upon magic. His focus is on memory and mind altering, but he spent twenty years training under the necromancer who runs the institution. He is also a poet, and used to write a lot of love poems for his ex boyfriend while they were together. Recently, he was involved in a plot to try and make his ex the crown heir... it didn't work, and since his former mentor was his ex's mom and the Duchess, he isn't allowed back in the duchy or the magic institution anymore. This seems like a perfect next step for him!

Insult Honey Dew: Blasted Elves... Mage: What's that on your hands? Honey Dew: Looks like a little blood, I am a cleric, soldier, and adventurer, *sniffs hands* it's not mine. Mage: Go wash them. Honey Dew: Of course, I don't want to soil your precious books (World Anvil Ad) Honey Dew: Note to self, make sure to pack extra holy water. Mage: You are my assistant, What should I call you? Honey Dew: Sargant Honey Dew. I just need to research on some banshees. *muttering* It probably knows more than you would know. Mage: Curious person? Honey Dew: Just on where the banshee books are. Mage unethical/illegal research. Honey Dew: I'm just looking for the banshee books, maybe we should discuss this with my commanding officer. Mage: confidential? Honey Dew: I can keep a secret, but I'm afraid you may have to come with me to elaborate what exactly you are doing. Mage: Are you literate? Honey Dew: Yes, I know common and dwarfish, perhaps a well read mage would like to read the laws of the land. Mage: Books and scholarly writings. Honey Dew: Oh medicine, I have read libraries of religious material, mining, smithing, combat, military protocol, laws of the land, and royal decrees. Mage: Spell caster? Used a scroll? Honey Dew: *blank stare* I'm a cleric! On top of that I have used several shield spell scrolls in combat to heal my fellow soldiers. Mage: Pick a spell. Honey Dew: How about Locate Object, so I could find the book I am looking for. Mage: Seen raised the dead. Honey Dew: *holds out holy symbol* I'm a cleric, I had superiors do it, costly spell, but it's worth it, How long has it been since your subject died? Mage: *acting weird about death* Honey Dew: A mild shimmer, and they are back to normal if done right, then again I have never seen Resurrection done just Raise Dead. I am told Resurrection can take a lot out of you. Mage: Revivification unnatural? Honey Dew: Depends on how long ago. Longer it has been the worse. Mage: Poetry? Honey Dew: Mainly Halfing and Dwarvish poems. Mage: Relate to a verse? Honey Dew: There is this one verse it's a mining chant. Mage: What would you write? Honey Dew: Probably this experience, where are the banshee books again? Mage: Been in love? Honey Dew: Got a mild crush on my commander. Mage: How far for love? Honey Dew: If it's legal, or within my skills I would do what I can... Mage: fear of dead? Honey dew: To be honest you frighten me more, I think we should go visit a magistrate for a bit, it might be nothing, but I am ok with the dead or undead I have the means of repelling the undead. Mage: Book list. Honey Dew: Do me a favor and write those down, along with your name I do have an issue remembering names. Thank you, now let's visit the magistrate.

Honestly these videos are also great for building a characters backstory, not just roleplay practice. I now know that my characters long lost lover had a love of literature and poetry in particular, and that he carries a poem with him that he received from her the last time they saw each other. Also he has a significant amount of practical knowledge of necromancy from his time on the battlefield.
