Hi Fed, ORIS had a similar thing happen back in the day, they were part of a major conglomerate for a while, and their management bought the company back, making them independent again.

This is an excellent example and reminder, and proof that independence is absolutely an asset with the right brands.

GP and UN are two of my favorite brands. Super high quality and some of the most technically innovative brands out there. Both are grail watch brands too me. People forget about how unique and important the freak was. It was the first watch with silicon parts, something that is now used widely.

This is great news for Girard Perregaux. I have the Laureato on my "To Buy" list, but have always been hesitant since I have never seen GP sold in an AD nor its own boutique. I know of Ulysses Nardin, but their models never appealed to me. Having the management team buy both GP & Ulysses Nardin can be a huge step in the right direction since the team believes in the brand and can now make decisions faster without a "group" watching over their shoulders -- think of it as a new start!

I have seen GP sold in ADs in Arizona. Look really incredible up close and in person. I love UN as well but some of these watches are pretty unique looking and not for everyone’s style.

Excellent news. Conglomerates offer their subsidiary brands security, money and exposure, but may hamstring them with corporatist management and limited creative license. GP and UN have notable precedents to build upon. For example, The Freak (an embarrassing name for an entertaining orbiting movement) format could be developed much further. Other brands Fed lamented earlier are IWC and Panerai that are at risk of becoming irrelevant. As Fed said, this would be especially unjust for Panerai that ought to own its niche market--a distinctive tool watch with maritime history uniquely associated with tiny navies such as Italy's and Egypt's, and having the potential to partner with other small nations beyond Mare Nostrum (such as Grand Fenwick). Rumor: a formidable entity in Palm Beach County has been assembling a syndicate to rescue Panerai.

In my humble opinion it is a good move for GP and folks like us that have been GP fans for decades. And by the way, this is coming from someone that has PP, Rolex, some coveted micro brands and other popular brands in his collection. An enthusiast of the brand that knows the business running the company… why would that not be a good thing?!

I think that's good news for the two brands. IMO, they both are undervalued brands and hopefully the new management can take them to the next level for both the brands.

I hope it works out for GP. It’s sort of a brand that I’m fond of but couldn’t handle the depreciation on. I was browsing in Selfridges in the UK last week. The sales assistant was most insistent that I try on a 1966 after I made the mistake of asking a question and it was bad and by bad I mean BAD. It felt like a sub-£1000 watch for the price of £7500. … Of course this might just be me being an idiot and knowing nothing about watches but I was quite shocked at what you got for your money.
@WatchUnwind2 жыл бұрын
What was your question ?
@justpete27482 жыл бұрын
@@WatchUnwind … Literally, “Is that a 1966?” … The salesman was a great guy, I explained that I was just browsing and why I was browsing - There are a couple of older 1945s that I like and I liked the Laureato chronograph before it became scarce. That’s why I hope that this acquisition works out as I think the accountants were trying to squeeze too much out of the watch I tried - I want to be fond of GP but if the product doesn’t meet expectation that’s not good for the brand. Obviously I’m just one person with one opinion trying on one watch. I’m really looking forward to be able to prove myself wrong the next time I try one on.
@rey_s902 жыл бұрын
Interesting, why did the 1966 feel like a £1000 watch? I’ve always held them in high regard
@justpete27482 жыл бұрын
@@rey_s90 … Yep completely agree - I have as well. The model I tried had a dlc coating and I think some sort of coating on the strap. Combined with it being a “dressier” type watch the combination just didn’t fell right. It’s a tactile thing but the temperature and weight really jarred for some reason - it just felt wrong. Sometimes I think trying on a watch can be like drinking orange juice just after you’ve brushed your teeth. There is nothing wrong with the orange juice but the combination isn’t good - think this happened in this case TBH!

They need to redesign the Leaureto, push it away from it looking so much like a bootleg Royal Oak and keep the theme as a more affordable luxury sports but have it claim its own identity... If you look at the overseas, nautilus and RO, they're in the same league but they're completely different, Leaureto will probably never be in the same league but perhaps it can gain some ground as a more affordable and unique alternative with technically better specs like hacking or better water resistance or a range of dial colours etc... I think there in lies the key to their success because if they have a desirable flagship, then the lower end models might get more attention... A brand with that much heritage had a huge opportunity I think!
@eyeheartsushi22122 жыл бұрын
Concur. I don’t understand why so many brands price their watches in a tier that makes the user say “for that money I might as well get a xxx.” Someone needs to “crack the code” and bring value and heritage in a more affordable way.
