I always assumed it's because Maya comes from a broken home and therefore doesn't have what Riley has. You only get one mother and father, so acting like this isn't helping your or her or those around her.

I kinda hate when tv or real people talk about teenage rebellion like it's SUPPOSED to happen. Like if it happens then it happens, that's just how it works sometimes. But if you have a good relationship with your parents and there's no bog issues there's absolutely nothing wrong or abnormal about not going through a rebellious phase. I never had one and it was great for me and my parents, AND I still got to live my life and go out to party's and junk. If you're parents are reasonable people there's no reason you can't be a good kid who listens to them and gets to have fun teenage years.

Seriously, though. How could Topanga not understand how important this is to her daughter? It is not like Riley always has tv marathons every weekend, she does a lot of healthy stuff, and she just wanted this one time for herself.
