Girl Meets World was the most unhinged show I’ve ever seen. Riley got upset over Pluto not being a planet anymore AND THEY MADE THAT AN ENTIRE EPISODE.

I was disappointed by the episode where Farkle gets tested for Autism, and everyone acts as if it's some awful disease, when he was acting fine with the possible diagnosis. At least they had a realistic portrayal with Smackle.

The fact that he didn’t say anything at the end like he usually does, really says a lot about this show 😭😭😭

The one thing I couldn't stand about this show was how naive they wrote Riley. It drove me insane. And then her incessant need for Lucas to change. I loved Farkle though.

The main problem with this show was it being on Disney , so there couldn't be any *REAL* conflict or challenging situations. Boy meets world dealt with puberty, hormones, sexual attraction, bullying, alcohol abuse, abusive parents, broken homes, parents being laid off, challenges of school , failing in life, feeling lost in the world... one of the best seasons wasnt even about Corey , it was Eric being lost in the world when he was done high school and didn't have good enough grades for College right away - Girl meets world had NONE of this. There was no challenge for these kids that wasn't summed up with ham-fisted lines and terrible dialogue. Though... Danielle Fishel is still looking absolutely amazing.

I'm still mad at how they treated Maya's character with the whole "she became Riley" storyline. My girl deserved better.

I'm glad someone pointed out how cringe the autism storyline was. But I wish you'd talked about how extra awkward it was with Smackle. Like they really beat a dead horse and missed the entire point at the same time.

Am I the only one annoyed by Riley’s “bad girl” phase. She was literally like “OMG, bad things happen in the world so that means I must be ‘evil Riley’ from now on!!” 🙄

You know between Maya treating Farkle’s possible autism like it would be such a huge issue FOR HER Or Riley throwing a temper tantrum that Lucas and her dad didn’t tell her Lucas got into a fight at his old school when Lucas was under no obligation to tell her and it wasn’t any of her business at all Or both of them standing up at someone’s GOD FORSAKEN FUNERAL and delivered a speech about how today they learned that the world doesn’t revolve around them at the age of like 13 I genuinely don’t know which of these characters we’re supposed to like is worse. Their sense of entitlement knows no bounds and everyone else encouraging it is terrible.

They actually talked about poverty in one episode and it pointed out that Maya wasn't in poverty and was not as poor as she thought she was. Like Shawn's family lives in a trailer park and got food from the food bank(bmw episode turkey day) but Maya just lives in a leaky apartment, which sucks, but I like that they brought up the difference in what people believe is their situation and what actually is

Now that i’m rewatching girl meets world when i’m older i find it hilarious how in the beginning of the show Maya talks about her mom like she’s neglectful and she’s never really there for maya when in reality she just has a job

The one thing I dislikrd about this show was that in Boy Meets World, the teacher did teach life lessons but he also actually taught school 😭 like his sole purpose wasn't just 4 students. But Corey for some reason like...just doesn't teach anything but fortune cookies 😭 and instead of the students resolving their issues outside of the classroom, they literally do it in the middle of class!

This show was literally a fever dream compared to actual reality. Like no school in the entire world would revolve around a group of friends and allow them to get away with what they did in this show. I remember one day Riley got bullied and the entire school stayed to watch her confront the bully in support of her. Then the bully ran away in shame, lol.

Girl meets world feels like the writer was trying to evoke Boy Meets World feels but they never watched a single episode and only read the Wikipedia

the autism storyline was absolutely infuriating, they treated autism like a disease! and farkle's not gonna be different once he's diagnosed, it's not like he just ~contracted~ it or something hey everyone, i feel like i should clear this up. it's important to recognize the damage caused by incorrect representation and all the people who have been insulted and hurt by this episode, but if you feel represented or choose to focus on things that were done well, good on you! while i wholeheartedly believe this episode needs to be called out for its flaws, that doesn't by any means mean you can't enjoy it or disagree, and i hope this comment section reflects that.

The worst part of Cory giving Farkle a stage to be creepy with Riley is that he's Riley's father, he should be stopping Farkle in his tracks

The thing is that this show always tiptoed around issues but never actually showed them. Take Maya for instance. She's supposed to be raised by a single mom who is a waitress or something, but she has super expensive clothes and is always free to hang out. She was always talking about how her life is hard, but never really showed it being so hard (Cuz you know... Disney). As opposed to Shawn who they showed all the way. And Riley omfg, that girl was so freaking annoying, no 12 year old girl is that naive.

There was always something about this show that rubbed me the wrong way, this writing is so overly dramatic and these characters are just so weird and I can’t seem to justify why people enjoyed it?

As someone who has a brother with Asperger's, the plot about Farkle potentially having Asperger's kind of hurt my heart. I wish there was better representation for kids with Autism. But taking the weird trope character and basically being like "Nope. No Autism, just a weirdo" just kind of felt like a slap in the face. But I haven't seen the show, so maybe I'm missing some context.

They were scared of approaching "real" issues and not making it schmaltzy and sanitised. BMW was real, even lizzie mcguire was real in a way, but GMW was heavy on the child friendliness which was to it's detriment. The show also had a very fake look to it, like you knew you were watching something filmed on a soundstage 🧐🙈

I have autism, and the autism storyline was beyond atrocious. I hope the idiots who pitched and approved that idea wound up having children/loved ones with autism, because I'd rather the guilt eat them alive for treating the condition as if it was a terrible disease.

I have autism right and watching that episode with farkle’s possible diagnosis really annoyed me. Sitting there watching his friends get so flustered and deny the chances of it like it was something bad or to be afraid of made me so upset, especially that they portray farkle as “the weird kid” anyway, the whole thing just made me feel inferior

I am so glad that I’m not the only one that felt extremely uneasy from the dialogue in this show. It feels so fake and weird I thought I transported to a different dimension.

I remember watching an episode where Sabrina's character Maya was doing better in school wasn't getting detention all the time and by the end of the episode the "moral lesson" was that Maya was changing into Riley and they were MAD about it. Like shouldn't you have friends that inspire you to be better? Maya is Riley inspiration. Yet when Riley is being one for Maya it equates to an identity crisis? The only thing that good that came out of the show is Sabrina Carpenter getting her start in the industry. She's way to talented for Disney. The episode is called "Girl meets triangle"

Riley's dialogue made me want to muffle myself. And Maya had so much potential as a character they could've dug deep on her absent father and living in middle class with a mom who cant always pay attention to her cuz it's just her, but no, she thinks not doing homework is a personality trait

The biggest problem with this show is someone clearly recognized that you can't talk about the things they talk about on the original show like domestic abuse, alcoholism, etc., so they talk about more down to earth teen esc topics which WOULD be fine IF they didn't present it with the same amount of severity as the original show did. Seriously someone could step on Riley's toe and the whole episode would be her moaning about how the human race lacks empathy like girl grow up !

the aspergers episode is actually so infuriating though because the whole episode you watch everyone react so poorly to it and treat it like it’s some horrible disease that’s gonna change how they view farkle if he has it and like it’s the end of the world if he does which can be so so damaging for kids who are on the spectrum.

As someone who was 10 years old when watching this show, it really changed my perspective on a lot of things and I was so drawn to it bc it wasn't like other shows I was i to on Disney at the time. I have only great memories from this show and it taught me some pretty valuable lessons that shaped my personality in a way......it's also why I crush over Sabrina Carpenter

The show being this bad shows how Disney relied on the name and didn’t bother to hire a competent writing staff because they are capable of writing good sitcoms such as: good luck Charlie, lab rats, Hannah Montana, that’s so Raven, suite life of zack and Cody, wizards of waverly place, etc

"I have literally no one at home to help me with my homework." ... Maya, honey, you are literally over at his house EVERY SINGLE DAY! It's not cheating! Literally say "Mr. Matthews, will you help me with my homework?" If anyone asks "My best friend's dad helped me." Of course they know who you're talking about but what are they going to do? Fire the only teacher at the school?

Finally, I feel like I’ve been gaslit by everyone seemingly liking this show every time I bring up how hamfisted it is.

All that talk about "The world" feels like the exact type of thing Corey and Shawn would make fun of in the OG series.

For me, something that always bothered me was how Farkle's parents constantly fighting(so much so that Jennifer was always throwing her wedding ring at Minkus) was made into a joke and never really taken seriously. Of course, Boy Meets World had jokes, but things were still taken seriously.

I just want to say that the whole "Farkle might be autistic oh wait not he's not" felt so forced. I wasn't ever into this show because is felt really weird with all it's contrived "dark and serious" moments, but dang. Talking as someone with diagnosed Asperger's, the only thing I remember about that episode is that they kept going "Oh no maybe he doesn't have it. He's ok but what if he's not." Like??? A diagnosis explains something about you, it's not a court sentencing that you'll never be "normal" after.

I adored Boy meets World, grew up with the cast. One of the most authentic & well written childrens turned young adult shows I’ve ever seen. (Of course it was cheesy and over the top sometimes lol but was still great) So I was incredibly disappointed with how cringe Girl meets World was. The writing was just awful

The main issue I had with Girl Meets World, was that it definitely appeared that Disney had more influence into the show than the creators did. There were some episodes that you could just kind of feel the Disney Corporate influence. But there were some good episodes in GMW as well. Girl Meets Stem is probably the best episode that I can remember

Why did her being nicer mean she was turning into Riley? Why couldn't she have just grown as a person?

Can we talk about the college party episode and how the college girls threatened to expose Josh for being a p3d0 if he didn't sit down. And they encouraged Josh and Maya's relationship. Why did Disney think it was okay to encourage a college student dating a 13-year-old. That's weird

This show had potential, and honestly some of the episodes where really great, mostly the ones that focused on the returning Boy Meets World characters. The problem was it aired on Disney Channel. Disney should have dropped this on ABC or Freerform. The creators would have had more freedom to make the characters more realistic/grown up. Riley basically NEVER loses the mindset of a 12 year old girl throughout the entire shows run, and that kills any potential for her character to be interesting. Maya has some great moments, and the episode where her dad comes back and the one where she freaks out about Shawn marrying her mom were both great. It saddens me so much to think about what this show could have been vs what we got.

As someone who's been waiting my entire life to be diagnosed, I was pissed when he wasn't diagnosed. Like, I literally can't tell time on an analog clock or tie my shoes in a reasonable time, I literally read books on how to socialize, how to make conversation, and practiced making eye contact but I was told for years I was just quirky. I'm not just quirky and could have really used the help and assistance in college... and the show just throws that away???? I'm on a 6 month waiting list for mental health because I'm very visibly autistic with good masking skills. I'm tired all the time and this show has the gall to lecture me before pulling the rug out from me. Also, its objectively worst in moral lessons and life experiences and Shawn deserved to be with Angela!!!!!

The real problem with the show was that Boy Meets World was one of the few realistic sitcoms, with actually believable characters and scenarios. This show was a slap in the face to everything that made Boy Meets World great.

I used to be in the gmw fandom when I was like 14 years old and oh man, those were some dark times. The fandom was just something else.

I feel like all kids shows are cringe looking back at them but watching this as a child was great. It reminds me of the time where there were no worries and eveyrthing was okay :) IMPORTANT: Since people in the replies bring up older tv shows i just wanna say that this was never my point. I grew up with watching older shows as well ( Alf for example ). One thing about girl meets world is that in every episode they expected you to have a correct answer and the problem had to be solved at the end of the episode. That was not the case for boy meets world which is why i loved it so much, they explained sometimes you wont find the correct answer and sometimes would take them episodes to figure something out which is realistic.

I also really hate how this show destroyed the relationship between Shawn and Angela. In the series finale of “Boy meets world,” it was hinted that Shawn and Angela would end. However, they could’ve found someone better for Shawn than Maya’s mother. She lacked the emotional intelligence of Angela and did not share in Shawn’s love of the arts.

The first episode was PAINFUL to get through, but I did end up liking the later episodes. I still eye rolled my way through it but there was definitely improvement

With Farkle, you forgot to mention that he was basically harassing two girls in front of the teacher, ONE OF WHICH IS THE TEACHER'S CHILD. Just a small detail.

When doing a reboot or remake, you need to answer two questions: what about the original made it work so well? Whatever the answer is, you need to keep that. Second question: what new stories does it have to tell? I'll take a parallel universe version of the characters if they just don't try to tell me shot for shot a story that the original already told well.

This show was painfully behind. The term Asperger's was phased out of the diagnostic standards a full year before this show debuted. They even sorta acknowledge this in their phrasing because "Autism Spectrum Disorder" is the current accepted diagnosis.

I never really got into this show but the episode where Farkle gets tested for autism annoyed me to no end because of how ableist it came off. I watched Giirl meets World before I watched Boy Meets World. I knew it was cringe but they also touched upon storylines other disney shows didn't include at that time. I watched it more for Maya's storyline. But Disney destroyed what Girl Meets World could have been. It could have been a proper dramedy with mature storylines and real character arcs without a random childish comment every 1 minute. Still, for what it's worth Girl Meets World taught me a lot as well.

I actually liked this show, in an odd way; yes, it’s overdramatic and just overwhelming sometimes. They made a big deal out of everything. That’s what I liked about it. I knew it wasn’t real, but after watching that chaos, reality didn’t seem so… ridiculously intense after all, and that was a quite good realization for a teenager. It was entertaining (of course, when it wasn’t being painful) to watch and laugh at this, and, when I was not cringing, I could try to get the point of what they were meaning to say.

I'm a huge Boy Meets World. So while I do find some guest stars episodes with the BMW cast okay, the ones with Eric and especially Angela kind of disappointed me the most. Girl Meets World writers took that Mr. Squirrel dream episode from BMW too seriously and actually made that storyline canon about Eric when they introduced him in the show, which I thought it was a weird and dumb way to do so. He later got better though... Now as for Shawn and Angela.... I also don't like how how GMW did Shawn and Angela's relationship dirty, Boy Meets World's famous interracial couple at that too. The show vilified Angela and made it seem like she completely dumped Shawn and wanted nothing to do with him anymore. But the writers of GMW seem to forget how Shangela actually had a mutual breakup in the original show. In the original show, Angela had to move oversees to live with her dad in the military and both Shawn and Angela realized that they can't make a long-distance relationship work. GMW also had Shawn moping about Angela for the past 15 years until he eventually becomes Maya's stepfather. Yep. They broke them up so that Shawn can end up with Maya's mom.

The big difference between the shows comes from the fact that they aired on different Networks which means the production and writing was entirely different. Boy Meets World and its 7 seasons all aired originally on ABC not Disney Channel (Disney picked up ABC in the middle of the shows run and Disney only ran reruns). This allowed the writers and producers to create a great show that was for preteens and teenagers that dealt with serious issues, as well as some light hearted stuff. Meanwhile Girl Meets World was produced by Disney. Disney has shown that when it comes to producing their own original shows, they do pretty well, however, when they’re producing and writing remakes of something else they do poorly. Girls Meets World was an okay show but it could never stand up to its predecessor. Disney didn’t really understand what made Boy Meets World special. Everything for the most part in Boy Meets world feels natural. The lessons they learned and experiences they went through felt genuine. Meanwhile in Girl Meets World almost everything is given to them and almost nothing is ever earned. For example look at the teaching styles from Mr. Feeny and Corey as teachers. Mr. Feeny would try his best to teach Cory, and Eric for different reasons. Cory was being a bad student on purpose for the sake of Shawn at times (not wanting him to feel left out) and his own developed laziness because of this. Feeny new Corey was smart if he just tried instead of wanting to fit-in. Feeny would try understanding and tough love with Eric because he knew Eric’s laziness was out of fear of not making it in the real world. He knew Eric could be great but only if Eric let go of his fear and stop making excuses for himself. Mr. Feeny was genuinely trying to help but not overstep his boundaries. Once Cory becomes a teacher, he pretty much force-feeds whatever lessons about life he can into the lesson plan for his history class. It’s gets to a point where his own students call it out. That made it seem like Disney was making fun of Mr. Feeny as if he did the same thing. This shows that the Disney producers never understood the original show. That’s why they should have just left it alone or have it Produced on FreeForm

Definitely no where near BMW but I feel like I really blame the platform, as a basic premise and with a lot of the original cast who wanted to be part of it, it had a lot of potential. I remember when it got canceled there was a campaign for Netflix to pick it up, sometimes I wonder how the show would've done on another platform where they were ale to deal with more mature themes

I used to love girl meets world (not even knowing it was a sequel and that boy meets world existed). Then i watched boy meets world and absolutely loved it. THEN, i went back and rewatched girl meets world and thought “wow…girl meets world is trash.” Boy meets world is way better.

Okay, can we just discuss how Alex finally popped off? Like some of the reboots are okay, but some of them are like, really bad. Girl Meets World's existence pissed him off so bad that he didn't even go over one episode, he just went over everything he didn't like about it as a whole. It was a nice change of pace I wish all of his videos were like this.

Farkle was an annoying character up until season 3, it actually went in depth into his personality and made his humor so much more tolerable and actually much better, the second season was also pretty good as the beginning to his character arc, in the episode where they are handing out the yearbooks and all, he realizes that his awkwardness isn’t appreciated by anyone besides his friends, so he changes his outward image and personality to match what he believes a “regular guy” would be, but at the end, while everyone is trying to convince him to go back to the way he was, he learns that while he should still stay true to himself, it was always kind of his own voice that was telling him to grow and mature, especially since high school is right around the corner, meaning that he would be reaching a point in his life where he should act more mature and adult-like. Season 2 and 3 also touched on the topic of bullying and why it’s important to tell somebody, it’s wasn’t the cliche “bullying isn’t ok” lesson every other show has, it took a more mature approach and instead said “Hiding your feelings will never be a good way to cope with bullying, it’s better to tell someone about it”. Not to mention the fact that the guy being rude to Farkle wasn’t doing the cliche “haha loser” line that causes every Disney character to miraculously break down In tears 😐, he was personally attacking him out of jealousy. Now this is still cringey on its own, but had good intent, where as Farkle’s entire personality in the first season is literally “😀” and his weird obsession with Riley and Maya. Season 3 also allowed him to move away from Riley and Maya and focus on his relationship with another. Season 3 also did a really good job with the humor, I swear the first episodes were both sad, wholesome, and hilarious all at the same time. I gotta admit, I wasn’t expecting part of his humor to end up being him falling off a chandelier 😂

I'm a diehard Boy Meets World fan and have rewatched the full series within the last year, also finding new appreciation for it as an adult (Even though they didn't give Amy as much character development as Alan. I guess it's because the show was centered around Cory vs Morgan.). Granted, I wasn't the demographic for Girl Meets World but did try to watch at least the episodes the BMW cast were prevalent in. But GMW is so, so hard to watch for reasons Alex states and like a bazillion more. BMW dealt with so many issues in a sincere way that most youth-oriented TV shows ignore or shy away from, like drug abuse, racism, child abuse, sexism, etc. The characters, stories, cast chemistry and risks that BMW took make it hold up today. Nothing felt forced or said just for laughs (Maybe a little bit in the beginning, but it didn't feel super overdone). I felt like I was watching and growing up with a show about kids to adults that I could have been friends with the whole time. And the messages and dynamics left an impact on me. In GMW's defense, they were held to the Disney Channel's hard standards. Had the characters and stories been given the similar treatment as BMW, it could have been really great, and I hope it did make some sort of positive impact on its younger audience members like BMW did with me. But maybe, kids should skip GMW and just check out BMW instead.

For a few years I said they should do a next gen spin off where Cory and Topanga were the parents of a daughter and call it Girl Meets World. I was amped when the news dropped. Man what a mess. It would be better if it never happened.

Shawn and Mya’s mother was the only tolerable thing I enjoyed about the show. Cause I always loved Shawn and he deserves happiness
