I've been decently hypothermic before. It's very peaceful and it feels like you're free of the weight of stress and responsibility. I remember waking up and seeing the candle in my snow cave flickering. It seemed a little bit concerning because that would mean oxygen was running low. I remember thinking "If I die, I die" and coming to peace with that very quickly before drifting back to sleep.

I like to imagine that all of the last chapters were strongly hinting towards their death too. The climb to the top removed all of their items, freeing them from worldly objects. Chito burned the journal, their memories that had connected them to the world. Out of the many questions of the afterlife they had, they once imagined it being dark and quiet, like on the stairs to the top. They'd lost all real perception in there, Chito mentioned she'd felt like she became one with the world. Reachinf the top of the staircase also represented putting an end to a cycle, just like how there cyclical lives ended. And then finally, when they reached the top, it was empty. Their perception of the afterlife was never too clear, so they never had an idea of what it would be like.

I just got finished reading this series last night, and the ending hit me pretty hard. One thing I wonder, is what their Grandpa's intention was in telling the girls to reach the top level. Did he hope that things were better up there, that they would find somewhere habitable? Or did he simply give them a far away goal in order to drive them, to give them something to live for, fully expecting them to die before they reached it?

Another thing i noticed from the ending that i think its worth pointing out is that in the last chapters Chito and Yuu kinda switched roles, specially in the finale, during the whole story Chito served as the voicr of reason, while Yuuri was instinct, but when they reach the top Chi gets overwhelmed by her instinct of survival and starts regreting their decision, saying stuff like "maybe if we had done this or that", and Yuu gets to the realization that it was over, that there was no point on thinking what they should have done because it was gonna be over for them anyway; hence why she threw Chito a snowball to distract her and have one final moment of sillines. I agree with these, i mean that was the whole point of the themes of the series, the acceptance of death as something natural and celebration of life no matter how hopless life itself may be. This two are reflected by various frases said by the characters for example: "Lets get along with the hoplessnes" -Yuuri "Maybe life is something that has an end" -Chito To me this ending was both sad and happy at the same time, it hurts to see them go, i cried while i was reading and after i finished i just couldnt stop, but i was also satisfied and happy for them, they finally achieved their goal, and even if they died atleast they did it together and calmly, i think they earned their rest. This series left me with such an uplifting message from such a sad coclusion. Life is worth living, it will get hopeless and frustrating, but there are nice things sometimes...

Even knowing that this is situationally their happiest ending and listening to your insight, ... I still feel sick. Heart sick I think because I have this weird ache around the middle of my chest. I'm probably projecting myself into their situation, but I can't help but feel so utterly sad about how their journey ended. I'm so stuck on the idea of these characters I root for living happily that I struggle with accepting their dying happily. It's this sort of thinking that brings me fully into existential angst. I hope that when I eventually find myself in their situation at the end of the road, it will be with someone I love as much as Chito and Yuuri love and comfort one another. Otherwise, I'm not sure if I'd be able to go so peacefully. I loved the video and the script really got to me.

This whole manga (and anime) is about Yuuri's point of view being superior to that of Chito's. We all initially identify with Chito as we care for posterity and hope for some kind of sense of eternity, but as the story progresses it becomes clear that Chito's attitude is unhealthy. Yuuri has already accepted the hopelessness of their situation, and at the very end she is shown to be right, as Chito ends up accepting the very same hopelessness and dying happy. Sometimes we have to accept that there is no turning back, no changing what's been done. We have to learn to live with what we have instead of looking into the past in hopes that it can also be our future. Time does not flow backwards, after all.

I never thought for a second that they didn't pass away in their sleep. But it makes me sad to see that death is the most favorable option for these characters. I won't in any way deny that dying peacefully in their sleep was a best case scenario, but the very fact that death was the best case scenario at all makes me sorrowful cause Chii and Yuu deserved so much better. Not to say I'd change the story if I could. Hell no, it's a beautiful story with an extremely touching (albeit bittersweet) message. But I love Chii and Yuu a lot, and just the fact that the universe dealt them the hand that it did bums me out. Although admittedly, I guess that was kinda the point.

I only know the Anime, but in that, they talked often about paradise as the afterlife. So their tour could be some kind of "Dante's Inferno" like journey through a real-life purgatory. And saying that "they will figure it out tomorrow" could mean that they will find out what it all was about in the afterlife/paradise. The story also reminded me of a mash-up between Kino's Journey and Blame.

It's always hard to come back to this series and it's existential questions. I belive its the very definition of bittersweet. The entire time these girls are on their journey, their situation becomes worse. They slowly run out of food, fuel, run into problem after problem. But the author reminds you of how beautiful it is to be human. Through it all, chiyo and yuu bicker, crack jokes, marvel at the world around them, help others out with their problems. They experience life in its simplest form and forget about the existential crisis of their journey. It doesn't do anybody any good to remember that all of humanity will not matter in the grander scheme. That we will all eventually die. If you were always thinking about that, you wouldn't even want to wake up. You'd just to want to meet death and get it over with. But this series is all about the things that you are capable of experiencing to forget about death. To reach your end goal. Girls Last Tour can be seen as a metaphor for life. You are given a purpose at the beginning of your life, Chiyo and Yuu's was to reach the top of the surface. But it is your choice on what to do after that. They could've followed that guy into the lower levels in a vain attempt at finding more humans. They could've stayed and helped that girl with her plane. But they pressed forward. They not only experienced life, but marveled at it. And in the end, they were satisfied. Had they seen all the world had to offer? Not even close. But they didn't need to. They reached their goal, their destination, much like you need to work towards yours, whatever it may be. Do not let it consume you though, every once in a while it is important to sit back and enjoy the little things. The grass on your feet, the feeling of the air, tasting frozen water as a snowball hits your face. For chiyo and yuu it was gazing at the rain, or getting to drink some of the last alcohol on earth. Don't focus only on your goal in life, appreciate the people that you meet on the way. Appreciate the world around you, even if we're ruining it with pollution, war, and death. Your life is your last tour. Take a note from chiyo and yuu.

this series is by far the only anime that made me genuinely felt depressed and sad. You know from the start that these two girls, so wholesome and hopeful, never EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER deserved any of this. This show, aside from its central idea of anti-war and stating that life itself is a gift that ultimately ends, so we should treasure every moment we have and be as hopeful as we can, despite the seemingly hopelessness. really did a good job of reminding us of what we have today. Think about it, how sad would you get when you hear the news of xxx country is having a famine, and xxx people died, with a photo of people crying? You don't get sad. You feel nothing. But not with this. In this show, we see all the silliness of these characters, their enjoyment of hot shower, some food, warmth...You can't help but wonder how much suffering they've been living under. When i got to the part where they had some beer, i genuinely felt so much sadness for the first time in my life. These two girls could be doing that all the time, today, in our world. But to them, its a one-in-a-lifetime experience. And the hopelessness just keeps building on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on with later episodes. When you get to the point where you realize that they are the last of human civilization, what do you feel? Its a gut punch for everyone.

I think the story wasn't about finding good in a bad situation, but more about being a tribute to humanity, sure the world has ended, but they explore and find all the great things we supposedly did.... To me the two characters are more like the final juges of humanity, the last eyes that will see the world and what they would think of it. Their death in the end marked the end of the jugement in a way. I also don't think the world that they lived in was meant to look cruel, sure they made their best to show that it has completely ended, but they didn't make it cruel. In fact it even was wonderful as it contained all the wonders that humanity has created lasting just a bit more to leave a mark on someone's mind.

only one thing could have saved them. a parachute. There was nothing they could have done here. A game embodies the sentiment of this show very well. The long dark. Once you know where your going. If you have a map you are safe. The moment you walk in the unknown. You may miss things and end up in points of no return. The whole repetition, the fact you always need to be moving and deciding what to carry. Everything is usefull. But you can't carry it without a vehicul. You also have a lot of dead weights... Its the cycle of looking for ressources to survive. Time flies by so fast. As your just always thinking, paying attention, exploring. Its a very relaxing experience. And a very deadly situation. Moving in the wrong direction is a one way trip. Remain to long idle and you run out and can't feed yourself. The entire show the girls were on a tight rope. It was amazingly showned. But also positive. They always lived in the moment

I was one of those people who tried to pretend it was open-ended, but I really can't deny what happened. I want so bad for them to be fine, but that's not true. I actually was spoiled on the ending after I finished the anime, so any moment of happiness or optimism from chapters 29 and on made me start crying because I knew how it would end. I'm rambling cause, honestly I'm straight up crying right now. Great work on this video man! For real!

If you're wondering why this is made now instead of 7 months ago when it was relevant that's because I'm a lazy bum. I originally planned to make a video but then after writing the script decided I couldn't be bothered so I just uploaded it to Wordpress instead, and now I've changed my mind and decided that I felt like making one anyway :P It's arguably quite redundant now because in the months between when I originally published the script and made this video Tsukumizu (seemingly in direct response to the confusion about the girl's final fate) has made two bonus chapters which further hammer in the idea that the girls passed away. Chapter 33 is an epilogue included in the tankouboun release showing establishing shots of the silent Earth, closing out on a frame of their helmets in front of the obelisk like a gravestone. And then when people were _still_ unsure about it, she made the special chapter 34 which features a poem that has lines such as "Let's hold hands and rest. Don't be sad the time is coming soon, and then we'll rest" and "our small crosses will be standing side by side at the whitish roadside" - which very explicitly beats you over the head with the fact that the duo met their end at the summit. It seemed like she was placing an expectation within the audience to recognise that their last tour was in fact a _last_ tour, and tbh I feel a bit bad she had to make such unsubtle pieces to fully convey her intentions personally. I understand the notion of death as release and as a happy ending is a controversial topic, but I'm viewing this from the lens of Tsukumizu's stories. It's no secret that she has an idealistic view of death, her artwork and comics have long had a tone that seemingly glorified suicide. And while I myself don't subscribe to this line of thought, I do think that in the context of Girls Last Tour as a fictional story Chii-chan and Yuu peacefully finding rest at the end of their adventure is a very sweet and poetic conclusion (as opposed to them being forced to live on in pain and then just die from starvation in a few days anyway).

I've always been thinking about this after finishing the manga and realizing that they were going to freeze to death; yuuri was physically stronger than chito which means that chito probably passed away first. Yuuri had most likely been the last person left alive if only for a brief moment; and beside her is the body of her deceased friend. This might have been true but I like to think that she was still asleep during this short time, I don't wanna imagine her waking up and trying to wake chi up only to realize that she's alone now. I like to think that they were both asleep until their eventual deaths.

I think that Chito and Yuuri's journey is a metaphor for the soul's journey through the afterlife. Chito and Yuuri go through stages similar to how the soul goes through different areas in the Egyptian afterlife. Eventually they reach the end of their journey and pass on from this world to the next. Also I think GLT goes along well with the album Demon Days by Gorillaz with the final song Demon Days being their passing onward.

8:54 That's the one that clinches it for me. Beyond the low odds of them surviving. Beyond the raw impossibility of them making it back to the elevator. Beyond falling asleep in hypothermia inducing conditions. What's the point? It's like On The Beach: Sure, you can not take the pill if you want... but all you have to look forward to is excruciating death. They've had the last race, the last meal, they've had their last song, and their last joyful moment; The _Sawfish_ has confirmed that there is well and truly no chance of survival. What's the point? You'll only prolong the agony, and you won't prolong it more than a few weeks (in the case of GLT) or hours (in the case of OTB) regardless of what measures you take. They're dead, but at least they made it. I hope the other two are still alive, still trying to map out the city and fly to the other city, but I'd like to think Kanazawa dies of a heart attack or something after finishing his last map, and Ishii dies in a crash landing when she finally makes a working plane.

Kanazawa looks like he already lost the will to live, even after Yuu's pep talk. Ishii is content like the 2 girls in the end and likely to have starved down there. You can accept the sweet release of death or you can fight, cling to life until the bitter end. Rage against the dying light. Is it worth it? Who knows.

Something to support this idea as well: In the fish tank chapter, it is pointed out that life is a spiral; always moving inna circle, but always forward. This motif is used on several occasions: the cycle of draining and refilling supplies or the spiral towers leading to the next layers above. The fish is evolution, it's the animal that's said to be what we evolved from at the beginning of evolution, and is used to make a point about how evolution hits its limit eventually. The fish is also used several times as symbolism throughout the story. Chito's keychain is a fish made of a wire spiral. Their final ascend is a spiral staircase. The panel when they enter is is almost menacing and absolute. And fittingly, the staircase ends literally nowhere. It just ends in the air with nothing above it and nowhere to go. It's a symbol for the end of life. The plain field they end up on is death. Ironically, their ultimate destination, before they even knew and before the story even starts, was going to be death. Everything's been pointing towards it from the very beginning, hence the title "girls' last tour". Not any tour. Their last one.

This was a sad ending for me, seeing that they never achieved happiness like being lazy and having entertainment. I think all their joy was extremely bittersweet. However, characters are symbols of what they have accomplished. When you look at someone who has left behind a legacy you will see the journey, not the ending. Mozart was known for his great compositions, not how he died tragically. I think that these two girls also did the same. They had a goal, accomplished it, and passed away peacefully as everyone does eventually.

A little late to the party on this one, but I disagree with parts of your analysis. I never saw this work as one that was simply trying to represent people finding the best out of bad situations, but more so one that examined what it means to live. All the people that Chito and Yuri cross paths with are pursuing their life passions, and even though most of them ultimately fail, they either resolve to start back up again, or they find peace and meaning in their pursuit despite their failure. The question being whether it is worth pursuing ultimately fleeting and "meaningless" goals given that everything will come to an end. Chito and Yuri's journey is the embodiment of this idea, as they pursue the arbitrary goal of reaching the top layer of their world. Despite there being nothing at the top, Chito and Yuri don't despair at their failure, but instead relish in the journey they had. Despite the additional chapters released after the fact, I don't think the death or survival of the characters have any real thematic bearing to the core message of the series. I see the ending as a celebration of humanity. A confirmation that the "meaningless" pursuits we go through to find meaning in life, are more important than any grand existential meaning. The afterword from the author reinforces this notion as he states (this is a loose translation as I only have the Japanese version on hand) "Many things remain unclear in this world due to it's large size and complexity. Chito and Yuri believed that the joy of living never fades. I feel that I wrote this work while wanting to believe that. Probably." Although I don't know the belief system of the author, giving the heavy buddhist influences on Japanese society, I see the notion of coming to peace with yourself despite a merciless world to reinforce some thematically buddhist ideas.
@JackQiao
@JackQiao 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I also disagree with the GP's take on how the ending was a way to "end their suffering" - the girls were never portrayed as being unhappy except in the dream sequences. IMO the theme of GLT is "I'm glad I got to experience life, even though it will end" - a celebration of life rather than despairing death. Thematically it would be consistent for them to die at the end, but I also disagree that it's completely open and shut. According to my head canon: - there are no bodies in the higher levels - it would be really weird for there to be nothing but a big rock on the top level. Maybe it's not a rock but something else - the final panel shows that the stone is etched with two circles, possibly representing the neighbouring city that was established to exist - all the people may have evacuated to the other city, leaving a communication device for any remaining survivors
@ProtagonistOfficial
@ProtagonistOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
@@JackQiao Glad to see I'm not the only one who viewed this work as one with an overall positive message about life. Btw, in an extra chapter the stone writings are translated to be a poetic prophecy of Chito and Yuri's journey. I'm not sure why an ancient civilization would write something implying that all humans will ultimately come up to the top of the rock and rest though. The series ocassionally foreshadows the potential existence of human's elsewhere (another planet maybe?) which could be related. On first read the stone writings could just be a way to reinforce the death of Chito and Yuri. On the other hand, rest could also imply that they will be saved by some sort of technology by either the humans/aliens and taken somewhere else. This would give a reason that is not just thematic for the existence of the rock writings. As I mentioned earlier, I don't think death is thematically necessary to the show, which is why I don't see a potential hinting towards salvation from some sort of higher power as contradictory to its message. As I see the hope and pursuit for life and meaning to be at the core of the series, I think a more ambigous ending is the perfect way to allow for the possibility of hope, despite the obviously despair ridden situation. This is not to say I don't think Chito and Yuri did or didn't die, I just think that suggesting that there is only one arguable position on the manner is higly debatable.

I think alot of us don't want their death to be the end. I believe this is because it identifies just how badly we try and hope in even the most hopeless situations. In all honesty, even though it's just a anime/manga, it is very hard to come to terms with our people's future extinction. in all likelihood, we will one day die out. It doesn't really matter how, which is probably why they don't go into detail about it. What matters is the journey. Though, I admit, considering that no one will remember us after we die out is a scary thought, and what will happen after we die out in the unknown is also scary. I think, that this story is one that takes us all on the journey, because in a way, these two girls represent the sum total of mankind. I would like to think that the readers are like all of humanity watching our final journey in this fictional world come to a close. So that we can remember them, and carry these two girls legacy in our hearts through our own lives and journeys.

They killed themselves. It is a running thing that they'd keep track of how much explosives they have left. They use "some" here and "half" there but made it a point to say "let's keep one left, just in case." Then, in the final few pages you see one of the girls grab their last explosive before they found a "second explosive" that turned out to be the food you mentioned here. After eating the food, they blew themselves up.

I think the title of the series also completely agrees with this. It would not make sense to call it the last tour if there was no confirmation of death, or knowledge that this was the end. I guess to some extent, it doesn’t even need to be “Girls last tour” anymore, it could just be the last tour. It’s pretty safe to say that these two are the last living beings in the city, or even on the earth if the machines are to be believed. So yeah, this is the last tour of anyone experiencing the world in all of its glory. And as such, there truly would be no more meaning to the girls staying alive after this. Sorry about this tangent. It was a great video, and I really needed this after just finishing the series. Thanks!

Ah, it was a beautiful story to be honest. Girls' Last Tour had some very adorable artwork and a very peaceful story. One thing I really love about the story is the Kettenkrad itself. When it breaks down at the end of the story, like you said, it symbolizes the imminent end to come. In a way, the Kettenkrad is always there for Yuu and Chi, almost becoming a character on its own, although it's just a goofy little treaded motorbike. When the Kettenkrad broke down, I would like to think that it was like one of the main characters passed away.
