The wonderful themes of an opera taking place in Spain but written for the St.Petersburg theater condensed in this standalone symphonic masterpiece which is the Sinfonia from Giuseppe Verdi's La Forza del Destino.
While the opera was written in 1861, the Sinfonia was added by Verdi in 1869 with the idea of an opening piece but also of a standalone work. Basic question here, what form is this piece played in? And how many themes are here. Im in music 101 so i am trying to learn the basics as well as better understand the music itself! Thank you for this! :)

Hi, this overture is in a free form, as it became custom for the (opera) overtures in the second half of the 19th century: the overture aimed to introduce the audience to the most important themes of the opera so that they could be recognized as the performance went on. This was not the case in the 18th century. Think of the overture to Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro for example: none of its music returns throughout the 4 hours that follow. Mozart himself did anticipate the custom of introducing a theme from the opera in Don Giovanni but that's an exception. (By the way, the analysis to Don GIovanni's overture is here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r7SijL1j08Wzj4U.html). As far as the themes go, I would suggest making a fun game out of it. Listen to the sinfonia a few times with the score, then listen to the opera and find the corresponding themes. For example, the theme starting at the Allegro Agitato e presto comes back times and again. Another theme is the one presented at Andantino of letter B; a third one is at the Andante mosso of letter C. And a fourth one at the Allegro brillante of letter G.
