When I was in the US Army SF, before going to VN, I made a sheath combat knife to take with me. I did not use a file for the blade, but went to a machine shop supply house and bought a piece of 1% carbon tool steel and shaped it, including hollow grinding the cutting edges... I also used stacked leather for the handle, but used brass for the guard and the hilt. Worked great and I carried it daily for my 16-1/2 month tour over there. I need to do a little restoration of the leather as it has shrunk a bit. I still have it, but keep it in my safe. I will pass it down to my heirs eventually.

@@wyomingwright I like the aluminum look for this utility knife. The pommel reminds me of my PAL 36, with the exception that the pommel on the 36 is not threaded. It is pined perpendicular to handle the all the way through capturing the stick tang Thank for the video, nice knife.

Fun video and of course we want to watch the sheath under construction. Did the same thing about 14 years ago but after a one summer I redid it got rid of the aluminum, replaced it with some stainless scrap from the shop. Just got tired of having gray hands and fingers. and gray all over everything including gloves .

My thought for finishing the leather handle would be, instead of wax, use thin CA glue, let it soak into the leather to properly protect it from the elements and then fine sand it to a nice finish. But, regardless of that, this was an awesome build!

That's a beautiful result. It's amazing how much the style of knife can change just by making a different handle. I also got myself that model of blade. But used a nicely seasoned piece of cherry wood. And made the handle more nordic. No metal, so it's not unpleasant to hold in the winter. It's fascinating to see how yours looks more like a hunting knife with that short handle.

Nice modification of the Mora, I really like the stacked leather look. I bought an inexpensive old WW II era PAL knife on EBay with rotted leather. Took it with me to a knife grind in and restaked the leather, sanded and polished the blade. Came out better than I could have imagined. I’m going to another grind in this coming June and want to do something similar except that I’m going to grind down the stacked leather about a 1/16” below the guard and the pommel edges and then do an 8 strand braid with brown and brandy toned leather strips. Enjoying your videos. Donald.

Next time you do a stacked leather handle, cut your pieces, punch the holes and then soak them in water. Then get a long 1/4-20 carriage bolt with some large fender washers. Put a washer on the bolt then place all the pieces on the bolt. Then place the second washer and nut on the bolt and tighten as hard as you can (water will start to seep out). Sit the stack somewhere warm and dry for a few days. Youll need to keep tightening the bolt periodically. Then use as normal. By wetting, compressing and drying you lessen the chance the leather washers will shrink and seperate down the road

@wyomingwright and when get to your final finish grits, start sanding in one direction only. You can do the "shoe-shine" method just only to the left or right. I usually go up to 400grit, that'll leave a beautiful burnish. Then you can dye if you want. I usually seal mine by melting in same wax mix (50/50 beeswax and parafin) I use on my leather edges.

Great job! It looks great and has inspired me to make one myself. One question, when stacking the leather pieces, did you keep the smooth side facing in the same direction for each one or did you alternate their orientation 1,3,5....2,4,6...?
@wyomingwright
@wyomingwright 10 ай бұрын
I kept them facing flesh side toward the guard. That way I knew I’d be twisting the pommel against the smooth side and I had less resistance while tightening it down really tight.

It's probably Mongol or some other Turkic language. The type of vibrating throat chant you hear is typical of Mongolia, Northern China, Tibet and Southern Russia (I wouldn't be surprised if it's common also in one of the various X-tan countries too). You may want to check The Hu, Hanggai, some dude called Vazorig Vanchig or something like that and (if you're more into metal) Tengger Cavalry, which is how I learned about this type of music, lol. P.S: that pukko-ed Mora ended up looking awesome!
