I know that at one point I introduced a greatsword made from a rare metal that was so light it had the finesse property, it was found in a wanderer’s shop, it was nothing too special, but the rogue loved it

This is why I love my DM. He allowed me to build a war cleric that has Kratos from the god of war series as her deity. He's currently trying to figure out a way to gift me the Draupnir Spear while still being faithful to the source material without making it too powerful as to overshadow the party. He's really awesome lol

I like to give out minor magic Items, Things like a book that when you attune to it you gain a plus 2 to arcana checks.

Crafting is definitely my fave conceptually. Taking a mediocre sword and making it what you wanted all along is so much more special. You can make a whole questline about gathering materials and finding the right locations to finally make that slightly overpowered sword you always wanted.

I played a game where the fabric that kept the multiverse apart was breaking down. Frequently we could go to a particularly dark cave and be transported to the shadowfell, or a forest would bring us to the fey wild, a house fire to the city of brass ect. Our BBEG (a lich) had a tower that was "no here" and we would take these opportunities to gather information or to look for evidence of his tower across the planes. On more than one occasion we would go through a door or something and find ourselves in the "not here" tower, and it would be a mad dash to try and find magic items or information. Our wizard would say "I search a bookshelf for scrolls/tomes" and our barbarian would respond with "I look for wall mounted weapons, and chests" something along those lines, but we knew our time was limited. After a bit the BBEG would show up to fight us, and after we beat him we would be banished back to our plane, while he regenerated. It was cool because he would get a little stronger each time we fought him, but until we found his phylactery (which was inside his tower) he would just keep regenerating and doing awful things, like flooding the plane of fire, or opening a tear into the plane of air to create a super storm.

I had my players come into a monster gift shop that was fine with them buying stuff, it was kind of like a hospital where they sold parts of monsters for monster, it was cool

i was DMing for my brother in a one-on-one campaign where he played an ancients paladin/feylock gestalt. at 2nd or 3rd level he fought a wyrmling blue dragon inside a desert lair made of lightning glass, and at the killing blow, he had a Hex active on it and he was Smiting it. the combination of divine and arcane magics flared up into a strange blue light as they came into contact with the dragon's blood as he buried the axe in the base of its skull. the axe seemed to almost drink the blood, absorbing it as it flowed from the mortal wound. when the light faded, the bronze of the axehead retained a bluish sheen, having transformed into a +1 weapon.

Gashapon. A vendor has a mechanical device the spits out little orbs. Most give you garbage like trail rations, nine foot poles, or 27ft of hempen rope. But a very few of them have magic items for prizes.

my favorite way is to make it significant for the character maybe the dwarf barbarian finds blueprints from their blacksmith family member of an axe that shakes the earth and it lists materials needed, or if a character watched a bad guy kill a beloved npc then they get the bad guys super cool sword that chips the sanity of those who it strikes, basically unless it’s a +1 sword or a bag of holding i make it an occasion when they get magic items

i like crafted items or items they're fated to find, even if theyre just reflavored existing items

My players gather gold only so they can buy custom magic items from The Merchant: a strange being consistent of a floating deer skull with darkness flowing out of it The Merchant and his table of 8 random magical trinkets can appear anywhere, while you're lost in the forest, 47 rooms deep into a dungeon, or exploring the underdark, make sure you always carry some coin and your best behaviour (And ofc there's a lot more character, backstory and lore to him)

I made a magic powder style system in the universe and have given my group black smith a book on jow to infuse this powder into items. My plan is to guide the black Smith, embuing their sn the parties weapon’s. Plus, I'm using the ancestral weapon’s guide, which is a great setup for making custom weapon’s with unique abilities.

One of my favorite things is to occasionally let players have an Iconic item. Just a thing that they start out with that maybe isn't too good now, but can be later. Like say a Fighter who has his family's heirloom axe. It used to be a big deal, but it's so worn down from overuse at this point it's barely better then a normal axe beyond the sentimental value. Then just giving little ways to slowly make this item more special. Maybe a dwarven smith sees the axe in the state it's in and can't bear to look at it, pays the PLAYER to fix it up a little. But hey, if you find any of This Cool Thing out there, any smith worth their salt can REALLY juice that thing up! Or maybe the Wizard keeps finding annotations, notes, and tips from their old mentor in their Arcane Tome that makes it better and easier to cast spells. The Cleric adds a ribbon to grip on their Shield every time they help someone and some god somewhere takes notice, etc.

I gave a player a Moonlight Greatsword that's made from parts of bosses the party fought. It's as heavy as the Dragonslayer from Berserk, but gets a ton of bonuses when he can actually wield it in a few levels after getting a specific item, so it's a mixed weapon that he has to roll really high in order to wield effectively, but it's always in the back of his mind, now, where he waits and wonders when he can wield The Garish, Ridiculously Enormous, Alarmingly Trepidatious (G.R.E.A.T.) Sword. 😂

Dear Shenron of the DnD balls, how should I handle/is important for a defensive protector campain? Most campains are about attacking an opponent, but how should a campain go where enemies come to the world/city to destroy it with players preparing and fighting them

Gods i wish crafting didn't suck...i want to craft magical items for myself and the party!! It sounds like so much fun to find a bunch of items and then create a special item for someone!!

This is where having fun, as a DM comes in, how do you construct a scenario, how do you want things to interact, these are things always worthy to think about. Now imagine you're me, someone who loves to worldbuild... I have trouble sleeping, because I have so much stuff floating around in my head. Countless scenarios, historical events, political intrigue, monsters, and other peculiarities. It's so easy to come up with a fun scenario in which someone gets a +1 equipment. They stumble upon an abandoned dwarven smithy, and there in a barrel lies a dusty old blade, and as you pick it up and dust it off, you notice it's brilliant lusterous sheen and sharpness like no other.

When I started DMing my most recent campaign, I asked each player what kind of items they wished their PCs would get. Then I started homebrewing stuff inspired by the requests

We faught against arcane eyes that can deflect or absorb spells, can give you +2 AC or Heat Metal based on a diceroll which of those Happen. The Paladin snatched one and Put it in His Armour. DM agreed that, If one of US goes artificer, artificer initiate or we find one in the world, we might be able to use that Thing ourselfes. So, I think letting Players decide what to get, using their ideas for new stuff and let them Work for it is the best was to give Magic items. That way, they mean something

I'm currently running a campaign and one of the player is an extremely strong fighter. He's been begging me for a +1 sword for a long time and I'm neglecting it, but I've been slowly giving the party hints about a REALLY strong sword that I'll reward him when they finish a main plot of the campaign. It won't be a random slightly stronger weapon, but a symbol of power that will reward his patience, good roleplay (engaging with the lore) and make it way more memorable than buying a new item at the next shop

i have a question kinda related to this i recently had a villain that could use a lute that granted them the abilities of a quickling(speed, evasion, blurred movement). my party defeated them and took the lute but i’m worried a magic item that gives them all the abilities of a quickling would be too unbalanced what should i do about that?

I think implementing all three could be cool and only add to your game. If it’s not fun at your table, remove it

What do you recommend if you've given the party so many magic items they blow away everything you throw at them.

Oh great cinder, I need your help, I want to play a mercy monk, and I want to multiclass with a cleric subclass, which one would you recommend for a monk/cleric combination?

@cinderblocksally Ran my first campaign and my wife is a player for her first time, it’s going well but we’re both very new to the game. How do I build specific battle maps / visuals to enhance the immersion. I currently sketch some scenes but I’m not a good artist and for battle maps it gets messy 😅 anything free that could help? I want to paint a picture and really sell the experience, also any tips on how to make the story telling more in depth and details richer on the spot? I pre planned and wrote a good start to the story but as more things happened that I hadn’t even considered, I felt I was leaning more towards mechanics than flavor and lore when it came to describing and imitating in the scene. I’m a new player and a brand new DM first timer so these speed bumps are bound to occur and we still had a great time but any tips are more than welcome!
