My nephew, Daniel, is off to college! While I'm very proud of how hard he's worked to get here, I can't help but feel I can offer some advice that he might find useful. So, I put on my professor suit and welcomed Daniel to syllabus day at Doctor Mike University, where I give insight into everything I learned during my many years of higher education. We talk about things like textbooks, dorms, roommates, making friends as a freshman, parties, adderall, relationships, majors, student loans, debt, college sports, dunking in basketball, and so much more. Are there any questions you have about college? Or maybe some tips Daniel can use as well? Leave them down below!
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

As a recent college graduate, My best advice for new students would be to get involved on campus as much as possible so you can start building up your resume and making connections with people. Plus at some schools, certain clubs might give you priority registration which gives you the opportunity to register for classes early! Best of luck to your nephews Mike!

Agree with this. You don't want to be rushing your senior year to get connections and everything done (ie. Internships). Have fun and don't be afraid to get involved in the college community! Don't take an 8am class. You think you can, but college is different. You'll end up running on maybe four hours of sleep a night. Talk to the teachers and other students, and make those connections. Lastly, make time for some self-care. College is a great time to learn many things about yourself and the world. You may be tempted to do everything, but taking time to replenish is so helpful in the long run

Bruh the vibe between them is literally me and my relatives 🤣 I get antsy whenever they go all interrogative like I'm on a public trial or something. And the advice and lectures? So on point! That's proof that the elders are always looking out for you :)

Agree with the waiting for the relationship. All the people who have gotten in a relationship my first semester of freshman year have all had terrible experiences: toxic relationship, trouble with friendships, and messy breakup. Wait until at least your second semester. I’m a senior now!

I loved how my professors all created their own books. Then included all of the class questions within the book. Or some of them created attendence sheets within the back of the book. Where if you didn't have the attendance sheet from the book you could be marked. Where after 5 marks you automatically fail the class.

So I don’t know how he studies, but my biggest piece of advice is to study to learn and not to memorize. In high school, I could just memorize stuff and do good. When I started college a couple of years ago, I very quickly realized that doesn’t work. You have to actually learn the material. You’re gonna do great Daniel! Good luck!

Yes!! Being able to explain the material back to yourself (or another person) verbally helps you know that you actually KNOW and understand the material.

@@han.nah. does this actually work? Cause last time I tried to understand a course I almost failed and just decided to memorize instead.

@@donoibagere5057 You've got a point. I always put my trust in the lecture notes because that's usually what the test was taken from. Unlike Mom, though, I never copied them over. I would study from my notes that looked like chicken scratch. I read the books, and that gave me depth, especially Math and Science proofs. But projects would always require field study techniques, so we did learn to use and figure academic - taught techniques in the field. (Organic Chemistry was in labs.) I used to spend fifteen attempt at the first math problem and each homework assignment. Same for the second problem. The rest of them seem to go smoothly, but the first two always screwed up my brain. The homework I was given really did help me learn what I needed, regardless of the struggle. .

Dr. Mike, you should do a video about your experiences in pre-med & med school because my son is planning on going to med school and it would be great to show him a video about some things to expect. It's bittersweet to think of my oldest son going off to college next year. I am excited for him to take the next step in life and become more independent, but it's scary to think of him on his own.

My brother is a Hoosier grad and IU is such a great school. Your nephew is going to love it. Highly recommend eating at Mother Bear's Pizza and getting cookies from Baked! They even deliver which can be bad for a college student looking for food at midnight lol. We also ate at the Village Deli for breakfast when visiting. All that to say, Bloomington has great food. And good luck and congrats to the nephew.

IU Employee here … - It’s a dry campus but off campus it’s a different story. It had a long reputation for being a party school. - Basketball here is legendary - Yeah, don’t buy the books - Car, freshman really don’t need one and it’s a level of responsibility that not all students are ready for their first year. Also, parking kinda sucks for students on campus -Nobody says Hoosier Daddy 😂

Time management is so important in college. Classes are only a semester long that is way different than high school. So everything will be fast paced. Need to balance studying for all classes and also having personal care time. First year can be tough especially being away from home, check in on the college students , send them care packages, makes them feel loved.
