Giving My PTO a Little Love and What to Do if Your PTO Shaft Won't Extend

A power take off shaft, or PTO is a really expensive component to repair. So, we want to give our PTO's a little love frequently, and while I'm servicing mine, we'll talk about how to avoid costly repair bills.
First thing I do to keep my PTO sliding back and forth is clean it good. I pulled the two halves apart and used WD-40 SPECIALIST® Cleaner and Degreaser to do that. WD-40 Brand is a sponsor of my KZfaq videos and I use a lot of their products.
Once the shafts have been completely cleaned, my favorite product for keeping them lubricated and sliding in and out is WD-40 SPECIALIST® Gel Lube. Spray it on all three lobes of the outside of the male shaft and then slide the two halves back together and you've made getting the PTO hooked up a whole lot easier and helped prevent rust buildup in between the torque tubes.
If you haven't done this and the shaft is stuck, it's possible to release the shield and spray WD-40 SPECIALIST® Penetrant down between the two shafts. That will usually trickle down and break up the rust or debris that is keeping the PTO shaft from coming apart. If it doesn't, you have a bigger problem. Then you need to put a strap through the PTO yoke and connect it to a good-sized tree, and the other end, hook to a come-a-long, and pull it apart.
If you can't pull it apart, it's bent. DON'T BUY A NEW ONE!!! If that happens, find a shop that specializes in driveshaft repair and have them install new torque tubes. They'll be able to do that at a fraction of a cost of buying a new shaft and it'll be the right length for the implement.
A little preventative maintenance on your PTO and knowing where to go if you have an issue will save you a bunch of dollars.
You can purchase the products that I use in the video at the websites below:

I like to separate the 2 halves when storing. If the PTO is in 2 pieces, it can't get stuck together.

Excellent, I didn’t know PTO shafts could be repaired. I’ve bent my manure spreader PTO first time within minutes of using it. I grew up in the suburbs, farmer stuff is all new me. Your channel has been great on educating me.

Yes, usually the first thing I will do in the spring is- grease & service the tractor , give it a good looking over- then service the brush hog & PTO shafts. Spend 10-15 minutes with cleaning and greasing- it'll save you hours later

What a coincidence! Just yesterday I called Brim to see if they had just the tubing, and they recommended the local driveshaft shop. I will eventually call them, but right now I will try replacing the shaft with some that I have leftover from another shaft I had to shorten a lot. Thanks Mike for an eerily timely video 😀

Mike... Thanks for sharing your ideas/tips. For my bushog PTO shaft, I use PB Blaster graphite spray. It works amazingly well without getting the shaft all gunky with grease and dirt. I store the tractor portion side of the shaft inside the barn so before reinstalling it, I give it a spray every time.

Mike...thanks for all the work to put these together and the information provided...for a relatively newbie Farmer who didn't grow up on one, helps immensely. We have an IH674 diesel tractor I bought a few years back...LOVE it! Have been looking for a PTO driven tiller for it but they're quite expensive, at least for us. I came across a hydraulic driven one that was much less expensive. Curious the pros / cons of both. We wouldn't be using a tiller all that often, at most once or twice a year. Any help appreciated...thanks!

Lots of good info. I have found most ag dealers stock most parts, including the tubes for pto shafts. WD makes lots of good products, but I don't normally use their "original".

Perfect timing. I’m new to PTOs and was wondering if there was a zerk somewhere along the shaft where it extends, like my truck has. Now I know: take it apart.

Clean Old Debris and Throw a Little New Grease on your PTO Output Spline Shaft, This Bit me Earlier this Year. Thought I would do just a Little Brush Hogging, and Left it Dry. Was Very Difficult on Removal afterwards. Won't Make that Mistake Again. Keep Up the Good Work!

Yes Mike, never forget that shield. We wouldn’t want any little tractors running around… LOL But yes always lube everything. I just got through paying nearly $600 for a new shaft with a new slip clutch. It could have been cheaper but parts were on back order.

I wish you had done this video several months ago. My PTO shaft was so rusted up I had to cut the plastic off of it and use a torch to separate the tubes. After grinding all the rust off I managed to lube it up and reuse it. Now duct tape holds the shield on

Hi Mike, I haver a very old style pto shaft on my brush hog and i was disappointed that i couldn't grease the u-joint with the pto attached. Also my pto plastic shield has become disconnected from the flowered end of the plastic shield - any way to get those two plastic pieces back together? I do care about safety and the safety chain only keeps the flowered end stationary where the shaft and plastic shield still spin!

Hi Mike I bent my rotary cutter shaft recently, probably bound it up. The dealer where I bought it replaced the tubing for me for the cost of the tubing, I only had the thing for a month when I bent it. So learned a lesson but now I am pretty nervous about bending it again.

Len, a shear pin should break or a slip clutch should slip before a driveshaft twists. Something isn't right there. I've been running tractors all my life and have never bent a driveshaft. Did it contact the deck of the cutter, were you driving through a ditch, or cutting something really big? Here's a video about the danger of running through ditches: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oriieqWmnLOypn0.html.

If designed correctly the weak point should be that Universal joint at the driven end. It's the cheap part of the drive shaft. (generally the cheapest part of any drive line) Relatively easy to replace.

In today's litigious society this is probably a no-no, and I am safety conscious, but, the first thing I did when I purchased a rotary cutter and PTO shaft; I disassembled the shaft and threw away the damned shield crap.....I knew I was the only one ever to use the cutter and the tractor.

I bought my brush hog used and their was no shield on the shaft. I just don’t worry about it. If your close enough to a rotating shaft on a brush hog to get hurt by it, the blades are going to get you as well.

Agree 100%. I never get off the tractor if the pto is engaged or freewheeling with the shield off. I understand why the companies put them on. We understand why we take them off.

PRO TIP: The best lubricant we have found for the PTO shaft, tractor spline, and the universal joint that connects to the spline shaft is silicone grease. Clean ALL grease off well with a degreaser. Apply the silicone grease so the metal parts are completely covered, then wipe off the excess with paper towels. The silicone grease binds to the metal (even through rust!), it is impervious to temperature and water repellent. We did this 3 years ago and haven't had a problem extending the shaft nor with attaching the shaft to the tractor. The best part is: NO ANNUAL MAINTENANCE! Do it once and you'll never use normal grease again. Here's the link to the product we bought: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005RNEH5O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
