HELLO IT IS I, someone who very much loves historical fashion and style but is too chaotic of a person to achieve it. AH WELL it's never stopped me from trying hehehehe. So here we are, and this week the era of my admiration is the Rococo era. Big, big hair and beauty patches BAY-BEE. I got this 18th century inspired gown a while ago and it's just been patiently waiting for me to wear it so I figured why not make a whole darn video about it lol.

Abby Cox: detailed, researched recipe for pomade and powder, and the knowledge of someone who has done it time and time again. Rachel: Just having some fun with it and showing that you can try these styles without having extensive experience with them. Both are valid. Both are great.

Thank you! The number of "Abby Cox wouldn't approve" comments on this video are kinda upsetting tbh. Do we really need to gatekeep historical fashion so tightly that only those with degrees and decades of research experience can partake in a bit of recreation fun? Don't get me wrong, that's totally a great thing and we as the general public wouldn't have the kind of knowledge we do about historical dress without people like Abby. BUT that is not the only way to appreciate and take part in historical dress. Not everything needs to be 100% accurate all of the time always. Historical costuming is intimidating enough without people being super uptight about minutiae that straight up do not matter in cases like this. Sometimes it's just for a laugh and that's okay! I think encouraging people to do things like silly recreations without worrying about accuracy could spark the interest of folks who could one day go on to educate and inspire even more people!

I love how she purchased a tin of hair powder, and then was like “my hair is dirty, I need to cover it in dry shampoo before I start styling it”. Is one not just the 21st century version of the other?

When I run out of dry shampoo I use corn starch in a parmesan cheese shaker on my hair and it works great. I also pretend I am from the 18th century while doing so.

I was thinking the same thing when she said she’d never seen it! I cannot believe that, it was a show my family would actually just watch together if it was on and laugh and joke about together when I was young. And then she did that movie Beautician and the Beast! 10/10 recommend if anyone hasn’t seen it. My dad and sister still randomly quote The Nanny and the film I mentioned to this day and they may be obscure, but I adore it!

I watch a good amount of historical fashion videos, so when she was doing her hair, I felt like there was something off but couldn't really place it. It was about when Rachel said "...I'm wondering if [the hairpiece matching] really matters when we start adding the hair powder" that I suddenly remembered that you are supposed to powder your hair BEFORE you style it. On the other hand, dry shampoo is basically the same thing, so close enough I suppose! XD sidenote: hair powdering is where "powder rooms" came from! Since they did it regularly (about once a week I think), some houses had a specific powdering room to contain the mess.

@@jessiejvr1783 It does help with the tall hairstyles, and make the hair softer and more voluminous, but the main reason is hygiene. They basically pomade and powdered their hair instead of washing it, which absorbed the oils and kept the hair smelling nice from the scented powders. If you get powdered hair wet, though, it sticks together and you might have to wash it all out and start over.

Hopefully he’s happily “resigned”and rather understands this is part of the person he loves, so he supports her, knowing occasionally she might need his help getting into a dress or doing electrical work for a bathroom redo. 😊 Creative people need to have support and you can see that Rachel always has her animals and Nick in her vids.

This was ADORABLE, as always. Rachel even has the walk nailed (head up, back straight, don't swing the arms) My husband frequently has to play the part of Lady's Maid for me, getting all the fiddly bits connected for my living history presentations. On those days we call him, Bridget, (Bri-jeet) and frankly, if your man is not willing to step in and unknot your stubborn corset laces, or use a button hook to fasten your boots, don't marry him, girls. The true rock star husbands will procure for your birthday the American Duchess footwear that makes an outfit. Nick is clearly one of those keepers. Love seeing it!

The frolic in the field was excellent!! You totally nailed the golden hour lighting... and the results were greatly pleasing to witness. The final shots showed why candlelight was, and still is, such a popular choice for establishing a romantic atmosphere. Congrats on such a highly successful "dress up", and thanks for including us so that we could also frolic along, if only in our imagination. The dress looked great, by the way. This was really fun. I especially loved the cut in of you eating with Nick. It’s just so funny to me how my boyfriend doesn’t even react when I have on crazy makeup. Sometimes I get a got chuckle from him at the midway point when even I’m telling myself to trust the process. 😄

Love these costume ideas. I am 50 and still love a dress up/play day. I just recently learned that my mom popped in on my grandma in their much younger yrs and my grandma was dressed up as a GEISHA. Nope, grandpa wasnt home, it was just my grammy having a fun day home alone. 💖

Masterful. Also I laughed till I cried in the dressing parts of this, historical reenactment is 90 percent struggling into garb I felt your pain. It's so hard on the arms. Keeping 'release the kraken' and prayers to the chaos gods ' to remember to cheer me at low points. Fabulous content, you are my go to creator for fun and shenanigans, my husband often comes to see what I'm watching so loudly and avidly 😁

Doesn't matter how awkward these are along the way, or how many times Rachel says it might be a fail... I knew immediately that the reveal would leave me Speechless, and it did. Absolutely loved this whole journey.
