That's not entirely true. The first movie to use CGI was in 1973, and it was called Westworld. Even though it was only used for 2 minutes, it opened up a whole new method of special effects. It was still early, and Superman was released only 5 years after, so CGI wasn't exactly a practical choice for effects by then.

John Williams can basically make me cry on command with his Superman score. The sense of joy, optimism and hope it conveys is truly legendary. It IS Superman.

He's every "true" Comic book fan's Superman.

That's why Reeve's performance was so great. He was convincing in both roles.

@@Centane Seriously. Watch The Animated Series. It's THE best, most accurate and heartfelt interpretation of the character pretty much *ever* since the original comics. A lot of it has Reeves' influence too, and the old Fleischer Cartoons, which you should also definitely give a watch.

We wouldn't have Marvel movies that are as good as they are today without Reeve's. He legitimized it all!!! (Yes, I love the Marvel movies .. and these days DC sucks!!!) The great thing that Donner did when he made Superman the Movie was he made it as a serious movie that just happened to have a superhero in it, and it worked.

I never watched any of the Superman movies after the original three with Christopher Reeve. But one day I was watching the Hallmark movie, "The Nine Kittens of Christmas" and saw Brandon Routh (who played fireman Zachary Stone). The first moment I saw him I said, "He'd make a great Superman", not knowing at the time that he already played Superman!

​@@dayspring3459reeves actually did put on a lot of muscle for the role just like many do today. He trained with coaches that trained champion bodybuilders. In fact, the studio was concerned he was going to put on too much muscle. It doesn't seem like a lot since today, actors are taking it to an unhealthy level that can impact their health in the long term. Remember, they are actors first, and maybe they take on athletics to add to their acting. Doesn't help that his costume material isn't the most flattering as it smooths out his form. And it doesn't have padding or added CGI to enhance him. He got a healthy level of size without juicing, fake padding or CGI. Besides, Superman's strength is something beyond flexing gym gains.

Clark Kent is a 1930's midwestern farm kid. Farm people help their neighbors. It's essential to success in farming. When the harvest has to come in, farmers cooperate with their neighbors to get the job done. So you get together with the neighbors and organize a train of grain wagons running between the combine and the grain silos so the combine never has to stop moving. You need one guy to run the combine and a whole bunch of guys to run the wagons. It requires a lot more than one farmer and his family can handle. It doesn't matter if you're neighbors are good friends or not. They need the help. Just like you do. So you help. When a storm/tornado destroys one farmer's barn, everyone in the neighborhood would get together to build a new barn. Because he needs one. And, when the time comes, everyone knows that the neighbors will help them when they need a new barn/silo/etc. (And it's an excuse to get together, socialize with the neighbors, gossip, etc.) When the Post Office began rural free delivery farmers would sometimes leave a note for the mailman asking him to milk the cows, feed the chickens, etc. because the family had gone off to visit relatives for a day or two. And the mailman would do it. Because they were neighbors and knew each other. Because the farmer needed the help. Because it is what farm people do (even though it's annoying to have one of your deliveries offload a bunch of farmwork on you without asking beforehand). City kids aren't like this. City kids might stick up for immediate friends and family, but they aren't typically going to just help out a neighbor they barely know just because. But city people also tend to be more mercenary, more self-centered, more unscrupulous in their dealings with other people. It's why so many stories feature a farm kid called to adventure - like Luke Skywalker. City kids tend to turn out more like Batman - motivated by very specific personal drives rather than a generalized non-specific impulse to help others.

Exactly like in Doomsday Clock. All the superheroes could not beat overpowered Dr. Manhattan. Superman "shrugged" off many of them at the end to show his strength. But with Dr. Manhattan he talked to him, to understand. Instead of the two hitting each other and annihilating the universe, Spues used his mind to "defeat" his enemy. Shows the kindness and empathy Kal-El has. Read the story to see the impact Superman had On Dr. Manhattan at the end. Impressive on the hero Superman truly is.

You're thinking of Doctor Manhattan. Superman lacks the power to rearrange atomic particles thereby creating and/or destroying matter, He also cannot die, Superman can (and has). Manhattan doesn't age, either. His physical appearance he creates with his MIND (non-physical intelligence)

Your comments about movies and comic books at the time, I'm sure, are accurate, so I'm not trying to argue against your views on the climate of the times. But I've heard several people from my dad's generation use this argument of "It's not fair to compare movies from the [70's/80's/whatever] to modern movies" I understand why they make that argument and that for people who grew up with these movies, they're beloved classics. But it's also not a fair argument. Again, I concede all your points. I'm just pointing out a fact that a lot of people who make this argument don't seem to consider. Preferences are subjective based on the person's thoughts and experiences. This is a beloved classic that you grew up with. It was important in your life for whatever reason. But to someone like me, who was born about 25 years after this movie was made, it is very dull, cheesy-looking, and outdated. At the time, I'm sure it was groundbreaking. But I have no emotional or nostalgic connection to it. Telling me I can't judge this movie against the movies I grew up with doesn't make sense. Because like Superman for you, the movies I grew up with are the beloved classics of MY life. Naturally, what I grew up with will have an effect on my tastes and opinions. And those tastes and opinions are going to be applied to the things I watch. I will stress as many times as I need to that I'm not trying to argue that your opinions on the matter are invalid. They are perfectly valid and understandable. I just get frustrated that so many people have their own opinion on what is good and why, and then based on that opinion, view everyone who disagrees with them as wrong. Or worse, views them more harshly than that (such as Tic Toc Melody, above, who apparently views fans of modern movies as childish embarrassments, to paraphrase.) I mean, everyone feels the way they feel, but for my entire life, I've seen way too much of this "my opinion is right and everyone else is a complete moron who should be degraded and punished for daring to disagree" nonsense. You like the '78 Superman movie. I get that and I'm not going to hate you and insult you for it as a disturbingly large number of people might. But I do NOT like this movie (to clarify, I don't HATE it, I just don't find it particularly memorable or engaging) and it would be nice if people could refrain from hating and insulting me in return. @@TTM9691 A hidden gem of a movie. It got buried by "Despicable Me" and the Minions because they came out at about the same time. It has a unique take on the typical super hero vs villain plot. It would be particularly relevant after watching this movie. It features the voices of Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, and Jonah Hill. Definitely worth checking it out.

Too bad she didn’t like it. Similar reaction to Popcorn in Bed hating Batman 89. When you’re raised on modern superhero movies it is tougher to appreciate these older films in context. But I remember a lot of people hating the time travel in this movie. Too bad she won’t watch Superman II which is an even better film.

I think you can split superhero movies people to two between people who like heroes like Superman, Captain America , Spiderman to people who like anti heroes like Batman , DareDevil, Punisher. @@jdolan74 Cassie wasn't too big on the whole aesthetic of Batman 89 so there's that as well kind of found it very weird and creepy. Nolan's Batman is very tame in comparison even to the comics so it's much harder for anyone who's introduction to Batman is the Nolan trilogy to get into anything Batman related that's more comic book feeling from villains like Clayface to the more gothic revival timeless depiction of Gotham City etc.

There are a lot of scenes in the sequel I have problems with (for one, Clark going back to beat up a bully for no other reason that to sooth his bruised ego. A very un-Superman thing to do). I have no problems with this film.

I usually find the issue with slow pacing in movies to be a problem of the audiences, and not necessarily of the movies themselves. usually.

@@knightheaven8992 I think that's an excellent take on the matter. It seems to me like movie pacing being "good" or "bad" is subjective. Some people find fast-paced movies too frenetic; others find them engaging. Some people find slow-paced movies boring; some appreciate the atmosphere built by the story taking its time. I live with a mental condition that makes movies with slower pacing very difficult to enjoy. If I'm not kept constantly engaged by a movie, my brain starts doing its own thing and thereafter I can barely pay attention anymore. It's why there are a bunch of movies people call "classic" or "masterpieces" that I find insufferably irritating to try to watch. I have heard other people say those movies are slow or dull. But I'm sure for many others those same movies are excellently paced. I think it mostly comes down to opinion on the matter.

And the animated shows are stellar as well. Justice League Unlimited really understands the characters and doesn't "dumb things down" storywise. The episode "For The Man Who Has Everything" is gut wrenching in how it shows that Superman just wants to have a normal family life but it seems like the thing least attainable to him.

I believe the turning back of time is representing the power of resurrection and the death of Lois presents him with the greatest moral choice he will ever have to make of either accepting history and fate as a human or exercise his god like powers for his own selfish reasons not really knowing how that action could affect the outcome of the future beyond what he restored.

Superman can turn back time. It was nerfed in the 80s. But he can still alter time in some level.

Don't get me wrong, I love Smallville, but that was Clark Kent not Superman. There is a reason he doesn't fly until the finally, and Tom stressed this himself, as soon as he flew the character becomes Superman, and Smallville was about Clark and becoming Superman.
