This is so relatable! I moved to a new city 2 years ago as well and even after volunteering, working, and attending all the farmers markets I possibly can in my city, I still feel such a lack of community/connection. I love where I live, but I also live a 20 min drive away from any of my friends. I'll be watching to see how your experiment plays out and maybe consider it for myself too :)

absolutely loved this video especially because i'm going through a similar timeline right now. i just hit one year living in LA a month ago, and i moved down the street a few week ago for a few reasons but i'm most grateful that i can give this city another shot. really related to a lot of things you hit on and it made me feel less alone : )

Kath!! I so resonate with your thoughts around motivation for moving and giving your city a second chance. I felt so isolated and unsettled in my first apartment in Vancouver last year, which soured my experience of finally having the opportunity to live in the city I’ve wanted to for years and worsened my mental health exponentially at the time. This recent move to a new neighbourhood and into a vintage, homier apartment has reframed my experience of living in this city so much in such a short time. It feels so supportive and comforting to be so close to friends and to be able to have spontaneous meet ups! My neighbours/friends regularly share food we’ve cooked with each other and sit outside together. I can’t wait to hear about your experiences in this new space! ❤❤❤

Moving apts has always felt like uprooting a tree to me, even when doing it in the same zip code. But what I've found is that having some things reamin the same, your furniture, your stuff, etc, can help provide some sense of grounding and orientation. But I agree that moving to an area which reduces the friction of seeing other people will be helpful. The easier and more convenient something is, the more likely you will be to do it.

As a gal who’s four years into her Seattle tenure, I can say I really did not feel truly settled or like I had found my space in this community until maybe three to three and a half years in. Now, a lot of that was likely pandemic-related as I moved here summer of 2019. BUT, I think it’s great you’re giving it time and another go-around. Finding the right neighborhood and the right community of friends has made a place I thought of leaving feel like home and a place I want to stay for quite a while.

Thanks for this video. I have not moved in over 10 years - but back in my 30s, I moved very often. 5 interstate moves within a 6-7 year period… plus a few moves from one part of a state to another. And i guess one or two local moves thrown in there. Wild times. Most of those were driven by job changes, at least partially. Though at some level I also believe I was enticed by the idea of a fresh start, as you mentioned. And of course, you can’t run away from yourself and all that. But I believe the changes of scenery did do me some good, at least to a point - giving me some sense of hope and renewal. Although I’m in a very different place now, these themes and thoughts are still worthwhile for me. Particularly the closet metaphor, considering what I want to keep, discard, or introduce. Thanks again for the thoughtful discussion and the window into your world.

This video definitely resonates with me. I moved to Portland Oregon when I was 25. This January I’ve been here 18 years. There have been ups and downs, but my biggest doubts set in at the two year mark. That’s the point when romanticism fades and reality sets in. It’s an amazing journey of discovery - enjoy it! That being said, my season in Portland has passed and I’m ready to take on new challenges. Hoping to be East coast bound in the next couple of years!

Thank you for sharing this - its helpful to me as someone who is considering leaving my 20 year marriage. Change is hard but you show its do-able. And must say that your comments about inviting people in really show how "third spaces" are so important for community. The co-housing community I'm buying into has a common house and laundry and I think you and your friends need a space like that. You are doing great though - keep sharing x

Two days ago I read a newsletter by the artist Carson Ellis, and the title was “are you living in your spiritual home?” - about daring to move to a new place that you feel drawn to for some reason within you. And it got me thinking about where I will thrive creatively and culturally, knowing it definitely is not where I live now. Pretty quickly I realised that I want to move to Berlin. The thing that has scared me away from doing this move (apart from just life circumstances) has been my lack of knowing anyone there from before. I also crave friendship and a social life. Now that my German friend that I met in Oslo at a design event is moving to Berlin with her husband and child, it finally feels possible for me to do it AND thrive socially. So now I am for real planning to make the move in January. Giving the dream a chance!

I recently moved to a new neighborhood within a city I moved across the county to two years ago, so these feelings HIT for sure! Also looking forward to a second (or third) chance at law school as I start my last year :,) it can be tough to break free from patterns and routines when throwing burnout and impostor syndrome into the mix but I'm intentionally taking on less than I did last year to see what happens if I try to ENJOY every day of this experience rather than just getting through it :-)

As someone not from Seattle who has lived in CapHill a little over a year this kinda amuses me. Definitely the right move! Living near or with people you love is very much a cornerstone of a fulfilled and healthy life. Being completely alone (no friends, family, or life-partner nearby) is very unhealthy, and is a long since proven risk factor of many types of cancer and disease.

Best of luck in finding a stronger sense of community! I’m 30 now, and it’s tough as an adult. In our culture we tend to get so wrapped up in our jobs, our families, etc that I think many people stop prioritizing friendships and community once they reach a certain age. To be fair, time feels so much more limited as an adult. Good on you for questioning that paradigm and continuing to seek out a greater sense of social fulfillment.

Ugh, the prt where you talk about really loving a place but still not being fulfilled, community wise, is something i've been expericeing myself. Where I life there are two cities that are a bridge apart from one another. People rarely cross the bridge and therefore tend to live their lives within their own city, which is cause a (stupid) rivally. My community is on one side while I currently live on the other (moved in with family and making a career shift). Dispite this I still love the "other city" the town of itself is lovely but the issue is that I have 0 community. I so wish I could get my friends to see what I do. I guess what I'm saying is that I love running to people at the supermarket, art galleries and coffee shops. I love that I can see a different group of friends every week. Yet I still hope that I can have both, a city I find beautiful and a loving community.

Many thoughts after watching: 1) I live in a small European country where people mostly either stay in their hometown or move to the capital. Our shitty economy doesn't really encourage people to explore potential new places for living your life and I find that really limiting 2) I was lucky enough to both live abroad and study in a different city at some point. I've been back in my hometown for several years now, Feels really meh. Moving rn is not an option so I'm wondering: how do I give my hometown a second chance?

I really resonate with the idea that it might be easier to change everything at once then a few little things at a time. I think about this all the time. I thought so much about moving lately, to another state, to another city. And some of that is for LGBTQ protections and better healthcare and pay. But it’s also been a way for me to visualize changing all of my life at once, rather than the two or three things that I want to change now.

I'm considering moving to seattle, but all the negative aspects of it to keep me at bay. I'm from portland and although I enjoy the charm of the city I feel like i've hit a ceiling career wise. The ultimate dream would be san francisco but the Conditions in california have me worried (water scarcity, wild fires, corruption). I love trees and nature so Seattle seems like a safe option Except I know if I moved there Id live like a recluse since its a city full of introverts that hate socializing with outsiders. I like that seattle has more opportunities but it's too corporate for me. Nothing but sky scrapers And cookie cutter establishments it seems. Overall san francisco seems way more exciting, welcoming and pleasant weather wise. Life's short but part of me wants to add seattle to my live list just to experience it myself But why do that if the negatives are so apparent?

im not sure youll find what youre looking for. being closer to friends should help, but our society is just not fundamentally set up to encourage community, especially as you get older. i find it really only comes when you have a shared interest/goal/job that you and other peoples lives revolve around. that community is really hard, almost impossible to build, if it's just a side thing...
