So to summarize and or to clarify: Giygue was raised by Maria while George used him to uncover the secrets of PSI. Many years Later, Ninten would realize those powers and “defeat” Giygue by remind him of his humanity through Maria’s 8 melodies. After the events of Mother 1, he became so obsessed with his own power that he turns insane, unable to recognize himself. The Devils machine acted as a sort of ‘life support’, so when Pokey turned it off, he killed the physical form of Giygue. Giygas refers more to Giygue’s evil consciousness. The Background in the fight is a metaphor for his fall into insanity, sort of like an downward spiral. This is why the only way to defeat him is to pray, or fight him with positive emotions. This is also why you cannot grasp the true form of Giygas’ attack, because the attack technically isn’t a physical attack to conceptualize.

I remember seeing this comic years ago that depicted the moment when Porky turns off the Devil's Machine, and the artist had Giegue's original form still inside and showed the transition from Giegue to Giygas as his physical body being ripped apart by his own immense psychic power, meaning that (at least according to their visual interpretation) what we see as Giygas would be just a swirling mass of shredded organic material barely held together in a vaguely recognizable form by psychic energy alone. Don't know how close to the original vision that comic was, but it was nothing if not morbidly badass.

Giygas is lost within itself. And to me I believe if Earthbound for whatever reason gets another game, and Giygas shows up, I'd like to think you could save it in some way.

Here’s my theory. Giygas is not really a physical being you can either see or touch, rather he’s on a completely separate plain of existence. But he has telepathic abilities which is how he interacts with things. The freaky images you see in Earthbound like the swirling face and baby, that’s just an image he puts into people’s heads so that they can even have a vein idea that he’s near by. And he chooses that face because it’s to simply show he should not be taken lightly. And the “you can not grasp the true form of Giygas’ attack” means he simply launched a mental telepathic attack. It can not be seen, it can not be heard, unless you’re telepathic. But it can do severe damage to the victim’s mind. And the whole “pray to defeat him” is basically like a spirit bomb kinda. All the characters give Ness’ company the mental power to defend against Giygas and make him retreat to parts unknown. As for the doorway to him and Ness’ face: first off, the gang is in a parallel world, the only world where Giygas can be contained. But Giygas has a very vague connection to the outside, so he can connect to 1 person’s mind at a time, which was Ness. So he presented Ness’ face as a mental image to basically say to them “this is your only warning. I’m more dangerous than anything you’ve ever encountered. Turn back now.” And then when Porky released Giygas, well, read above. Adding to my theory, and the fact Giygas has a physical body in Earthbound Beginnings. Giygas’ race simply naturally has the powers of telepathy just like a scorpion has naturally abilities to poison. But Giygas himself was especially powerful, so powerful that after the loss of Maria, he went in a mental breakdown. A mental breakdown + telepathy = he basically destroyed his own physical body and his own sanity. So all that remained was just his vague spirit lying beyond a separate plain of existence as I said above. “Giygas is undefinable by human standards”, we’re talking about something that can’t be seen in the physical plain of existence and can only interact via imagery inside someone’s mind. So of course he’s undefinable by human standards, he can’t be defined if he can’t be seen.

Giygas and Porky in the Mother franchise were to me the embodiment of corruption and loss of ones self. Gigue lost his original form and became Giygas abandoning any semblance to Mary and Porky’s jealousy and yearning for acceptance turned him into a hopeless unsaveable monster (spoilers: kinda like the absolutely safe capsule)

i believe giygas' influence is so strong that alot of the enemies in mother 3 are still influenced by giygas. the returning exploding trees, rats (non chimera) attacking, etc. in earthbound they talk about how surroundings havent been as hostile only until a literal cosmic terror (giygas) returned back to earth. i also remember seeing a video a while back about how the events leading up to giegue becoming the embodiement of evil itself was caused by repressed emotions and ninten bringing them back by the 8 melodies. i believe the face-type thing you see as giygas being the background in the fight in earthbound can also be a way of representing that hes too far gone hes less of a being and more of a concept of evil. he doesnt even think and can give even porky absolute terror. giygas is a major tragedy if you think about it, alien that lost his family and forced back those emotions with anger

I imagine giygas is supposed to be a sort of lovecraftian god like being, a sort of personification of trauma. Perhaps to understand the attacks of giygas is to be traumatized, which is why it's so important that you don't, the protagonist is still too innocent to understand. Perhaps that is what's wrong with Pokey, Pokey was traumatized, perhaps by his parents, and so fears Giygas more than Ness and runs away, unable to face his trauma or the trauma he caused others.

I imagine how heart broken Maria, Giygas' adoptive mother, could be if she's ever witness what her otherworldly child has become. Like, how'd you feel if you have a kid that you raised them with all love from the bottom of your heart got separeted from you and then they became an totally unrecognizable monster for that unfortunate event?

Gigyas is the best approximation of an Eldritch Horror I've ever come across. The music when you fight Gigyas is nonsensical yet there is a pattern to it, like we can only understand part of it and it would only make sense if our brains were more complex.

Giegue IS Giygas. He was raised by Mary and George. George stole their power. So when Giegue matured he planned to destroy the human race before they have the power to use PSI against them. In Earthbound Zero (Mother 1) when defeated, he said he will be back. In Earthbound (Mother 2) He DID come back. He tried to destroy the human race AGAIN. Porky used this thing call "Devil's Machine" to keep Giygas (Giegue) stable. When he turns it off, his power destroys his brain causing him to not think rationally anymore.

Game theory but mature in a way

Personally in my head I like to imagine that Giyug, after his defeat became obsessed with power and throwing away his humanity as that's why he lost. In doing this he reached a level of power that disconnected him from space, time and tangible existence. From there he tried to re-enter the physical plane by imprinting himself onto Ness as a fetus, granting Ness and Giygas both similar PSI abilities and the look of Ninten due to his previous encounter with him. The evil in Ness is why he's attacked by random things like trash cans and dogs, and why he has to kill it in Magicant. It kind of ties in with the fetus theory, as him going back in time to stamp out Giygas in kind of a metaphorical exorcism of Giygas from Ness, so he can be sealed away from the physical world altogether. Basically, Giyug goes nuts, becomes to powerful to exist and plants apart of himself into Ness so he can exist, making the two similar to Ninten. That's my theory anyway, its kind of a Hodge podge of your theory and James Rolfe's theory as he showed in his AVGN video. Props on this vid btw!

I remember playing Earthbound a while ago because of one of your videos, now Mother 3 is one of my favorite games of all time!

The film that the creator accidentally watch was actually known as the military policemen, and the dismemberment beauty. Where there was a scene that a women was struggled to death, and chop into many pieces. If you think about it, the whole Giygas being a fetus theory still holds up. Leaving a huge mark on the creator, and representing earthbound Giygas as his childhood trauma.

I've just come up with an interesting theory. Giygas may look the way he does in Earthbound because of the effects of time travel in game. Dr Andonuts said that any organic life would be eliminated along the way, so perhaps Giygas died on his way to the cave and manifested as some kind of ghostly form.

Like Mr. Itoi, I had a traumatic experience as a child. I rented the 1998 video "baby mozart" from my town library and thought "What could possibly go wrong?". turns out, a lot. this scene early in the video creeped me out, and sent me running to my room as I wept with fear. Eventually, I got the name I have today.

Giygas is AT LEAST one of my top ten favorite tragic villains, and obviously at least one of the most powerful (if he isn’t THE most powerful). Yes, I consider him tragic. Also, I truly doubt he’s actually been defeated. Porky mentions he can no longer control himself and that still has me think about things like “what if he had full control over himself even after all of that?” and just how bad I feel for him. “It hurts” makes my soul ache and probably would no matter what my opinion of him would be anyways. Fun fact: Mewtwo is heavily based on Gigyas. Ape inc. who did Mother/Earthbound became Creatures inc. which has been working on the Pokemon games since the beginning. Look at Gigyas design in Mother 1 looks like a slender Mewtwo. Both also have extraterrestrial origin stories and powerful psychic abilities.

I think that in releasing giygas from the devil machine porky's psychic profile was essentially turned into a copy of giygas, since he was making no effort to defend himself psychically. Essentially, this made porky into Giygas's human incarnation, following the same priority and goals as him.

I think Giygas came to be because he thought he had a good relationship with George as a surrogate father. Whether George actually reciprocated those feelings, or if those feelings changed as George's paranoia (at least that's my interpretation, that George grew paranoid about an alien attack) grew, is kinda irrelevant really. George's theft of the technology and apparent betrayal deeply wounded Giygas and led to Earthbound Beginnings. After Earthbound beginnings and Ninten's rejection of Giyig, Giygas was born as Giyig as Giyig used his powers to link with the other aliens to find someone that truly understood him, but none did, and Giyig would absorb them in an attempt to share his pain. However, this led to a loss of self, and Giygas as he now called himself (name changes not being relevant to the Japanese game, but the translation changing names actually works well here) attacked Earth again looking for another who understood. Enter Pokey. Pokey's story is similar to Giyig's in many ways. Ness was Pokey's only friend, and when Ness left to stop Giygas, he lost his friend and escape from his parents. Pokey resented this, but still on some level understood. His joining the Happy Happy Cult was his attempt to escape his parents, though lashing out at Ness was a bit of a side benefit. When he apologized, he honestly expected Ness (who my headcanon has as a full-on mute) to at least make an invitation to his party or at least do something to show that Ness forgave Pokey, but because Pokey either wasn't looking or Ness was still grappling with confusing emotions at that moment, Pokey didn't get the answer he was looking for, and felt like Ness betrayed him. Being a former member of the Happy Happy Cult this put him on Giygas's radar as someone who truly understood him. The rest of the game is the slow process of Giygas and Pokey getting to know each other and bonding over their mutual pain. When Giygas is destroyed, Pokey saw this as Ness destroying his only other friend, and couldn't handle it. This led to him becoming Porky (through the fog of ages this time) and repeating Gigas's cycle using time travel instead of PSI. However, unlike Giygas, Porky never found a protege that he felt truly understood him, and when Lucas ended Porky's reign, he ended the cycle started by George.

Well in a way every game is connected by the theme of the game via the title. Every game is about the love from a mother (regardless of what form that mother is), whether it be the “mother” Earth, or a human mother

I always wondered what happened to the alien race that Giegue himself came from?? I theorize that Giegue’s fragility to human emotions and his sentiments towards his mother Maria made him, in a way, very foreign to the rest of his race. And how could they tolerate Giegue’s failures to stop humans from using PSI when he isn’t even the same as them anymore? Giegue no longer having a place with the aliens, and having lost his connection with humanity, so with his unstable powers... slaughters his entire race out of emotional frustration. Out of realizing the insanity of *everything* he’s done up until that point, we transition into his actions in Earthbound. But that’s just my theory!

Fun fact: the game's localizer, Marcus Lindblum, has said that he always pronounced Giygas similarly to the Japanese name, thus Geeg-gas. While it's not _technically_ official, just being how he personally said it around the office, I still personally prefer that pronunciation.

You know, before I picked up Earthbound a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t know much about the game. After I started playing I read that there was a prequel, which I read up on cuz’ the only system I would be able to get it on is WiiU, which I don’t have. Before I learned that Giegue was part of the inspiration behind Mewtwo, I had always kinda theorized that the creators of Pokèmon based Mew and Mewtwo off of the mythical Pooka (mostly because Mew has shape shifting abilities). And while what I learned kinda disproves that, I can still kinda draw connection, cuz it is obvious that some of the original Pokèmon were based off of mythical creatures.

You know, I remember watching another video on Earthbound and they mentioned the idea that the Devil's Machine wasn't showing Ness' face, but Ninten's instead. After all, he was the one who defeated Giygue through the melodies of his mother that were reclaimed. That could lean a bit more into the insanity theory, as Giygue refused to be defeated in such a manner and saw his repressed emotions as a weakness. He intended to return with more power to defeat Ninten but his lust for power became insatiable.

THEORY TIME, as promised: I feel like MOTHER 3 does kinda tie in to end Giygas's ambition, but through Porky; Giygas corrupted Porky's mind and turned him to evil, knowing Ness and his friends would eventually finish him off, and then once this occurred, Porky was evil beyond repair, and, having also obtained eternal life, waited until the future to finally enact his plans to end the world, many of them incredibly hyper-capitalist. After causing the Apocalypse and probably just sitting in that spider bed thing, MOTHER 3's main plot development happens, and specifically within the Nowhere Islands. Porky, however, being still technically a mere human, cannot pass his evil onto Claus, so he compromises with technology. We may never know if Porky Minch ever breaks out of the Absolutely Safe Capsule, and I personally believe he never will, both because it's been said that Itoi himself seems done with the series, and the fact that M3's dialogue hints that the Black Dragon will act on the wishes of the one who pulls the final needle. Given Lucas pulls the needle seconds after Claus dies knowing what he'd become, I'd expect the scene afterwards is the Apocalypse. The dark void after that is, in my interpretation, either some Afterlife or simply just an endless Void. Except Porky, though he may either be dead by then or just drifting around space and time eternally, so I've got nothing on that one.

One theory is that Giygas is a wandering soul. Giegue is just another alien body for him to inhabit, and the reason everything attacks Ness is because he's the latest reincarnation of Giygas. I think the "you cannot grasp the true form of Giygas’ attack" is interesting; it can't be comprehended because it's not a physical attack, but if you think about it, it goes a step further. You are literally being attacked by a form of consciousness itself that can't really be comprehended, let alone by children, even with their psi prowess. Maybe the attacks themselves were not only against the group's mind, but also their consciousness? Maybe Giygas was trying to corrupt them and turn them evil, because he already knew he would lose to them. He couldn't stop them, so if he could corrupt the group then they could carry out the destruction of earth. The dialouge alone is enough to make any child insane lmao, just imagine what it would actually sound like!

Not that it matters, but on a personal level, I always saw Giygas as an embodiment of my own depression. But that's just how I choose to view it. He's still a nightmare.

When it comes to the pronunciation of Giegue/ Giygas' name, I always thought it was pronounced "Jig" or "Jeeg." My reasoning behind this was my youth spent as a weird, bookish, little Autistic kid reading through dictionaries, encyclopedias, and so on, where one day, while reading a copy of Funk and Wagnall's, I came across this word: Giegue | Archaic Noun or Verb: Definition: See "Jig" Jig | Noun: A lively dance with leaping movements; Verb: to dance a jig I thought nothing at the time, because I hadn't heard of Earthbound or Mother at that young age... matter of fact, I was entirely oblivious to its existence up until I was in high school, roundabouts age 14 to 15, which was when I was looking up greatest videogames ever; upon learning it existed, watching let's plays, and so forth, I was hooked on it. And learning about Earthbound being Mother 2, I had to know about the first one, which lead me to discover the one of the original spellings of the name. And it clicked. I'd seen this word before! From there, I went down a train of thought involving one of the core elements throughout all three games of the series: Music. In Mother 1 and 2, one of (if not _THE_ ) the main weapons used against Giegue/ Giygas were the 8 Melodies. And Giegue/ Giygas' name is a reference to a form of dance. While Giegue/ Giygas is personally absent from the events of Mother 3, the consequences of his involvement (Porky Minch, Humans Manifesting Psychic Abilities Stolen from his People and Introduced into Humanity's Gene Pool by George's Actions, etc.) remain, even after his death. Even with him gone, he may have also served as a kind of historical precedent for the humans of the Post-Apocalyptic World of Mother 3, unintentionally giving humanity, more specifically the Magypsies, the means to contain the Dark Dragon (all the Magypsies are named after modes of the Major Scale; maybe the Needles act as tuning forks, set to react to the specific mode that its associated Magypsy represents; and maybe the music used to form that of the Seven Needles are the eight piece's of Maria's melody; if Giegue/ Giygas is the connective tissue of the Mother series, either physically or in spirit, and he's absent in Mother 3, what trace of him besides Porky and PSI remain in the world? The music). Admittedly, it's a very tenuous connection, based on perhaps circumstantial evidence, but I do think it merits some reflection.

I *highly* recommend the fan game Mother: Cognitive Dissonance. The insanity theory is combined with the idea of Giygas’s power being too great for him to contain. There is a full walkthrough of the game on KZfaq.

Also, i believe that Gigue (i think i spelled that right) went back to his home and was severely chastised for his humiliating defeat. So bad to the point that he sought to remove his one thing that caused his defeat, his emotions. specifically love and compassion, because it was his own memories of Maria that came back from hearing [the eight melodies]. He felt remorse and guilt for attempting to destroy/enslave the members of the same race of the one that raised him. but upon returning home he was punished so severely, that he steeled himself in rigorous mental training. coming to the apple of enlightenment, he learns of more PSI users on the world, and of Ness and Paula who look strikingly similar to Ninten and Maria. Unable to come to terms with his own weakness he closes his heart off and decides to travel back in time to prevent Ness from realizing his true potential. But despite the Apple's warnings of time travel as "it destroys the body only leaving the soul intact" or "destroys all organic matter" (per say) as why the Group of 4 had to have their Souls placed into the robotic bodies when they traveled back in time to fight giygas. but Gigue ignored that warning and traveled through time. Due to his hubris his body was dissolved and only his Soul remained, a soul that was filled with nothing but Rage, Confusion, sadness, and all sorts of negative emotion. and being such a strong PSI user, the body was not there to Balance the mind. and he couldnt control anything, his presence only leaked out corrupting things with said negative energy. so he had to bide his time to collect himself (most likely inside the devil's machine) to be able to gain enough power to fully control himself and take over. So thats why when the Group goes back and fights Giygas he is just a messy swirl of confused and angry energy. the reason why we probably couldnt comprehend it, is because it was such a primordial soup that used to be a soul. but now just a sentient confused mass of negative energy. But when Paula Prayed, all the positive thoughts and energy of everyone that they had helped along the way opened Giygas' soul back up and finally dissolved it. Finally putting the confused Being that was Gigue to rest.

That face of Giygas stuck with me for so many years. Very spooky stuff....

Really enjoyed this. I had a theory one time that Giygas and Ness were really the same person and Ness was fighting with his good and bad side.

Pokey/Porky used the first Phase Distorter in order to travel to the past, but due to Giegue's/Giygas's/Gyiyg's power, was likely able to survive. As for how Gyiyg even got Porky to side with him, it's simple. Gyiyg could sense Porky's sorrow from his friend (Ness) ignoring him with his silence. I believe that if Gyiyg contacted Porky, he would willingly join Gyiyg. The machine that used precognition to make prophecies, (The Apple Of Enlightenment) ended up having no say in Porky's role, so Gyiyg may have put some of his power into Porky so that his invasion of Earth could succeed even after his destruction. By that point in the future, Porky could only reach the Nowhere Islands, due to his not being able to time travel anymore. However, that was the last point on the planet, so it ended up being okay thanks to the Dark Dragon.

I remember back in Autumn of '98, when I was only 7 years old, I beat Giygas on my first try. I was never scared of the boss, I only fought him intrigued.

Just finished Earthbound today for the first time. The battle with Giygas was deeply disturbing.

What I do is whenever I get to the giygas battle, I turn my crt tv volume all the way up and whenever you first pray and that Shockwave sound effect plays. It shakes the entire room.

I believe Giygas' consciousness, or some shred of it at the very least, transferred itself into Pokey's mind at the end of the events of earthbound. Pokey had been under his influence, or perhaps by proxy thanks to the mani Mani statue. I think perhaps pokey welcomed this manifestation, and with a physical young body available, the two of them embarked on one final quest. Of course, madness was once again the thorn in their side. At least the absolutely safe capsule prevents future invasions. Right?

theory: so you know how dr andonuts said if you dont have a robotic body your organic one will be destroyed in the time travel process maybe giygas travelled back in time and used the phase distorter too while pokey had his own phase distorter (spider mech) so maybe giegue had his body destroyed but only one half of it so he had to be placed inside the devils machine so that his body wasnt destroyed even more but when pokey turned the machine off giegue basically exploded and turned into giygas. I was reminded of something about the Mother/Earthbound series. You aren't actually killing most of the enemies but rather saving them. Defeating them is bringing the enemies back to their senses. It could be that while Ness and friends originally went to defeat Giygas, due to Pokey's meddling, Ness and friends had to save what little was left of Giygas's mind before he destroyed everything.

I think it should be noted that Giegue has an "inexplicable" attack in Mother, and so does Porky in Mother 3. Seeing as Porky is far more powerful in Mother 3, isn't it likely that a bit of Giygas managed to survive in Porky, thus granting him his undefinable attack?

maybe those quotes of giygas is him asking for death, he is suffering with his mind and his body destroyed and after seeing ninten's decendant he is somewhat happy that someone with the power of ending his suffering appeared, even with his limited understanding of whats going on due to his mind beign damaged.

I wonder if Giygas in Mother 2 was inspired by H R Giger who came up with the design of the Xenomorph and the Space Jockey and their technology in the movie Alien. Giger always had a very biomechanical look to his art that had a lot of erotic connotations to them.

I get it bud. I read the instruction book to tatters over years, and my Mom haggled with our local video store to buy Earthbound for my 9th birthday in the mid 90's. This game, for a few people, has the power to make their lives infinitely better.

Another great video. I heard about Earthbound for years and finally played it in 2018. I just don't see why it is so popular. It was ok to me. I tried Mother 3 and just didn't enjoy. But what that said I really enjoy all the theories around the game series.
