Joe Glaser is the guru that has kept Nashville guitarists up and running since the early 80s. With help from Brent Mason, Steve Wariner, and Ricky Skaggs, his string benders and 3-pickup Telecaster setups became "must-haves" for anyone wanting to be seen as a serious guitarist in Music City. Today, we look at Joe's recently revamped string bender mechanism, which is now convertible between the B or G string, and his updated middle pickup blend control for 3-pickup Telecasters.
Find out more about Glaser's bender, and set up a time for an install.

A year later! Just had the crew at Glaser put in a B-Bender / Nashville wiring. Just wanted to add that with the pot out in second position you get all three pickups. Joe and crew are fantastic to work with and they are fast!

Nice. You may officially be the best advertisement for the Glaser Benders. The price and technical aspects make it a great option. Also, Brad Paisley, Steve Wariner, Ricky Skaggs, in addition to yourself" that's compelling!

I built a three-pickup Warmoth/Fender Telecaster recently and the wiring circuit I used is superb. I used a 4-pole "superswitch" so I get position 1 - bridge only, 2 - bridge and middle, 3 - bridge and neck, 4 - middle and neck and 5 - neck only. So I get the Stratocaster inbetween sounds on 2 and 4 and the usual Telecaster selections on 1, 3 and 5 and there's no useless middle pickup only setting. It's made the guitar incredibly versatile and I'm going to rewire some of my Strats the same way.

Sounds great Zac. I had one of those Music City Juniors a couple of years back. Great design, but if I'm honest, it was a guitar made very much to a price point, lots of cheaper components used in the construction -- I had two screw heads for the bridge break off when I was removing the bridge to change it from a B to G Bender. Didn't keep the guitar as a result of those issues. I also had a Tom Anderson Tele with a Parsons White, but that was quite a bulky unit and made the guitar very heavy. I would love to try one of these updated Glaser Bender systems someday. Thanks for the video as always!

Great lesson and demo Zac. My Tele’s there now having the B/G bender installed, medium throw. Was unsure of which (B/G?) would be most useful to me. Convertible put the issue to rest and l’m excited to experiment between each when it arrives back here next week. Also, thanks for the video of you over at Joe’s place having a bender installed. I was sort of worried when I saw the big drill bits boring down through the body, and hearing Joe talk about how he avoids wood-chipping during the process. But hey … it’s Joe Glaser, the master and ultimate inventor / innovator!! You guys sold me and I shipped my guitar the next day 😂.

Another great video, Zac! I’ve got to check out that blend circuit for the middle pickup. On my bender Tele, I have a regular 5-way switch with a push-pull switch on the tone control to add the neck pickup to the bridge. Works for me, but that blender sounds real intriguing! Side note: I had EMGs in that Tele for a while, with volume/tone controls plus the EMG mid-boost pot, and three knobs on a Tele control plate don’t work for me. They’re too close together.

My Nashville Tele had the 5 way switch, but I could not get bridge & neck together, which is one of my fav Tele sounds. Replaced the 5 way with a standard 3 way and added the 3rd knob for middle pickup volume. Works great.
@mombasaflash
@mombasaflash 6 ай бұрын
I use a 5-way switch together with push/push switch pots for various switchable functions - one of which is adding the middle pickup to whatever else is currently selected on the 5-way. So, to get bridge and neck together, the 5-way is set to bridge and the neck is brought in with the push/push pot switch. The appearance of the guitar is not changed at all. A switch is less fiddly than a blend pot and a push/push is infinitely quicker than a push/pull pot.

Thanks, Zac, You really do have the most informative and interesting podcast around. You and Five Watt World are my favorite KZfaq channels and I'm so appreciative for the intelligence and passion you bring to the table. This Glaser bender system along with adding a middle pickup sure makes the Tele a more versatile instrument. I have a Nashville Deluxe Tele on order but it comes with the noiseless pickups. I've always had mixed feelings about the noiseless pickups but it's nice to have something quieter when you have bad power in a Street Fair or some dive bar. I haven't decided if I'm going to replace the pickups yet. I'm a primarily a singer/rhythm guitarist, not a lead player, so I'm not quite as picky about tiny nuances of tone. But tone still matters obviously. You have any feelings about the latest Fender noiseless pickups in general?

I checked out Rutters for their switch tips but didn't see anything better than what I found at Forney Customs. Right here in the US, they make black anodized aluminum OEM-style tips as well as a number of other colors and designs. They have a set screw, also, and cost about half of what the Rutters tips cost. Plus you can get a stock appearing tip from Forney. I don't recall seeing that at Rutters.

The thought of blending pickups and not getting back to the sweet spot each time makes my OCD perk up.
@kengoodman7719
@kengoodman7719 3 жыл бұрын
Here is a thought you should pass on to Joe: make that blend control a push-pull which activates the neck pup. Same mechanics still apply, only this time you would get the neck and bridge position together when the push-pull is activated and the blender ability to add/blend in the middle for an additional 'all three' pups together option. This would still keep the overall functionality cleaned up without too many 'selections' with too many switches, yet still add to over tone selection. I think that might be a pretty cool idea....

What's Nashville wiring? Hmmm. Might redo my wiring to "50s era" soon. I'll tell you what. My solid ash, blonde with black pickguard T sounds incredible now that I've installed the Fender 62 Custom Tele neck and Fender American Vintage 52 Tele bridge pickups. Much much closer to what I hear when others play their Teles. So I'm quite satisfied. I put a 4 way switch in, also. So I've got the series option now, which I really like a lot, it turns out.

Curious, doesn't the 3 knob blend setup allow for all three pickups on, then blends in the middle pickup? Also believe Brent is all noiseless pickups? I have done the three pickups but have not yet changed the controls/setup yet. It is on an American Standard Ash body and maple neck guitar. Great but still go for my 52 AVRI Hot Rod Tele because I love the mini humbucker sound. The vintage sounds a bit different than the Standard.

Try the "Bender Bunker." The instructor provides a straight forward approach using his own "in-the-style-of" techniques that'll get new bender-ites intro'd to the basic techniques and styles and up and running fairly quickly. New B-bender'ers (haven't seen any G bender lessons yet on this site) may find there's a lot more to it than they may have imagined and for many, it will be a challenge that'll require some patience, persistance and (a lot of) practice. But, as I'm finding out, it's well worth the effort.

Are Jackson Steel "The Edge" string benders any good? The blurb reads that you do not need major surgery /carving/routing on your treasured Tele to fit these systems. And it incorporates a quick action lever to change to low E string to drop-D on the fly. Two benders can be fitted on the same bridge and the levers are operated with the palm of your picking hand. Mr. Jackson ("Shot" to his friends) started out building pedal steel guitars. His brand is Sho-Bud, the "Bud" being pedal steel master Buddy Emmons (RIP) who helped in the development of the PSGs. Maybe worth a look..........

Hey Zac. I notice that A LOT of Teles have wear on the fretboard on the very last slab of wood, past fret 21, on the very edge of the board. I know people aren't fretting strings there since there's no fret so what causes all the wear after the last fret? All I can come up with is that the saddles have to be set very very low. So low that the strings scrape that edge of the fretboard closest to the neck pickup when fretted. If not that, then what causes it? Because I see it allllllll the time and I wonder how it happens each and every time I see it 😄👌

Hey have you heard of the “bender by bjorn”? it’s a Swedish bender system that seems a lot simpler than a lot of other ones, I would love to see you check it out! (Especially since I’m a swede myself haha)

Bummer, surprising enough I use that function quite a bit ripping off 1950s lap steel and early pedal steel licks.

Damn. I built my own G & B bender into my guitars and probably spent more than $650 on tools, time and parts haha

so it took about 15 famous names to put together this experience guitar?! I wish I could understand what a string bender actually is! It mechanically bends ONE of your strings for you? It costs 700 dollars? It sounds just like your bending a string? There's something I'm still missing ...I've watched half a dozen videos...on string benders...not one has yet explained...what it is...really...I'll try Wikipedia?!!

That's a lame solution. Messing with knobs, push-pots and such. Add a 3-way Switchcraft for the middle pickup between the other knobs in addition to the trad Tele switch. The settings of the added middle pickup switch are: Solo, Add and Mute. Works slick and looks cool.
