When laying glass block, typically white mortar is used. That way the mortar that shows from inside the block matches. There is a tool used for filling joints called a tuck pointer, which, in addition to the squeeze bag mentioned in another comment, would have made this a lot easier, seeing as how the block was already cemented on the bottom. Normally, a mason would use a mortar of stiff, sticky consistency, butter all 4 sides of the opening, butter all 4 sides of the block, and slide it in, using plastic shims to position it properly. Then tuck point the joints that weren't completely full, let them harden a bit, and tool them with a round plexiglass jointer when ready. Then clean up with a damp tile sponge before completely hard, "floating" the joints smooth like tile. But your method worked, so all is well. One other tip; don't wet the block/surface with water if laying them in the above manner. Since glass does not absorb it like a brick would, it makes it much more difficult to control. Good job considering what you were working with.

Good video- a much easier way to drop in the mortar in the sides is to use an inexpensive masonry "bakers bag" where you can insert it into the crack and squeeze it in- makes it SO much easier!

You Did very well removing the old block and reinstalling a new block of like nature...Congrats...there is a glass block cement for glass block which helps with water issues and when it is wet or dry it is the color of the rest white...with out having to do anything else to it...but that is cosmetic...You were a pro on the removal part :)

Excellent presentation. I have a glass block wall where 3 or 4 bottom pieces are broken, and was curious as to how to replace them. Now I think I can tackle the task with some degree of confidence after watching your video. Very nicely done!

tsbrownie...I meant what I was telling ya...You did a very good job...Glass Block Cement starts setting quicker than the regular mortar...but like you said using the basics...got-er done :)!
