This is an easy DIY glass crusher that will give you a great upper body workout and produces beautiful colored sand that can be used for planters or glass melting with a large Fresnel Lens.

That really fine powdery glass would be so cool as the sand in an hourglass! Imagine having an hourglass you made from bottlenecks, with sand you made from the rest of the bottles inside!

From my research this method is the only way of crushing bottles with the lables left on. I tried this today but broke the glass bottles in a steel tube with a base ( xmas tree stand ) and just used a crow bar to smash the glass. I am going to make a large version (mechanicaly drivern) to crush many bottles together and with a hopper to keep adding bottles. Well impressed. Thank you.

I recently ground up a ton of beer bottles using your method. I used a metal T-post driver a popcorn tin and a plate of metal and ground up a ton of brown beer bottles I picked up off the road and also ground up a bunch of green Ale-8-1 ginger ale glass soda bottles as well.

Hey... a Suggestion for you. If you are looking to make some clear the best location to get glass is your local Framer. I own a frame shop and I toss hundreds and hundreds of pounds of clear plate glass every month because there is no place to recycle it locally. I know I would not charge anyone to come get some if they would like. Just thought I would put this out there.

@Moroboi Yes, the soda glass is very heat sensitive so it needs to be annealed gradually after you form it in the melted state or your project will shatter when it cools. I widen the focal point of the lens by 3 inches every 5 minutes over 15 minutes to an hour depending on the glass volume.

It is important to know that Glass has a COE or Coefficient Of Expansion. Not all Glass Expands and Contracts at the same rate as it Cools. If the COE of the different colors differs enough. The Glass will crack as it cools or will be very brittle. The Glass need to cool slowly so that the Out Side and the Inside of the Glass Cools Evenly to reduce stress through the glass. Large chunks of glass over an inch thick will need and Annealing Kiln to keep the glass from cracking and 2 releave stress.

For cleaning the glass I think some sort of acid would be the best thing. Crush it down till its liek gravel, set it in a light acid, wash it, then pound it down some more. Worth it if your trying to sell it or need high quality stuff. I really think this technique could be taken to a smaller scale. Just seems like a lot more heavy lifting than is neccissary to crush glass. I could be wrong of course. Once again, another great video dan.

so u return the glass (super cooled liquid) (silica) / silicon dioxide) -- back to the stuff your standing on and most of your yard is comprised of , sand ...--- \ so u could just be taking sand from your yard and u should get about the same thing as the powder from the brown bottles , is this a proper take on it ?

I'd be a bit more anal about protection with glass dust it will litterally blind you and cause horrible respiratory problems. Not usually one to stress on most things but make sure your eye protection is the fully sealed kind and definitely use a heavy duty respirator like he was wearing. Good luck on all your projects and as always great video Dan.

@GREENPOWERSCIENCE Okay, this is strange because this is the 2nd or third time I was doing something similar only to see you demonstrate something similar a few days/moments later. I just did a search for 'blue bottles spring water' and found the same thing. I'm in the midst of doing another bottle wall on my property. Also, I crushed a bunch of glass like you just did (albeit much cruder) to make bottle mosaics. Once again, nice job on the vid.

Dan would like to see you melt this stuff (if you haven't done a video of that already?) Can you use this somehow to make molten glass seals on vacuum tubes? How about making colored glass filigree. I think this powder and enough heat and some really thin brass or silver shim stock may be how the Russians and Mexicans do that sort of art work. How much better to be able to do that with a Fresnel lens.
